Method Statement for CMU Block works

This scope of CMU block work covers for the architecture Works of MH- 60R Facilities
& Infrastructure at Jubail Naval Air Base Project, for Maintenance Hanger, Corrosion
Control buibuilding, Ready Alert building, Squadron Operation building, Ground Support
Equipment Facility building and other relevant building internal and external wall as
specified in section 04 20 00 ASTM C 129, ASTM C150, and safety manual EM 385-1-1,
Including Testing and inspection and protection of existing services

2. GENERAL

The section 04 20 00 and EM 385-1-1 requirements are applicable to all government and
contractor work force when the emmployees are performing CMU work activities of
Maintenance Hangar, Corrosion Control buibuilding, Ready Alert building, Squadron
Operation building, Ground Support Equipment Facility building and other relevant
building

5. RESPOSIBILITIES

5.1 Construction Team

The subcontractor construction team are responsibility for the supply and execute the
concrete mansonry unit works, including but not limited to prepare and submit the
contractor for material approval, mixing of mortar, installation, transportion,
handling, storage, preservation, testing and inspection, site preparation and all other
associated works headed by the Sub-Contractor Project Manager as well as to his
Construction Manager, Site Civil Engineers, Supervisors, Foreman and Surveyor. Site
Civil Engineers assigned for concrete mansonry unit works should ensure the
compliance for all related works in accordance with Project Specifications and ASTM
and this Method Statement. The Contractor is to coordinate, supervise, verify, test
and carryout in process and final inspection in compliance with the scope of work and
all applicable specifications, standards and documents.

The QA/QC Manager will have fully functional control and ensure all QA/QC
activities are in compliance with project specifications section 04 20 00, ACI, ASTM
standards and project quality system requirements. QC Engineer/Inspector will carry
out surveillance in process inspection and coordinate for final inspection with the
Contractor Ayuni /Client Representatives as per project specifications.

5.3 Safety Team

All the activity shall be monitored by Sub-contractor Safety Supervisor and Officers.
The Safety personnel’s will conduct regular safety inspection before and after
activities to ensure that all necessary safety precaution are being taken to avoid
incident/accident. All personnel’s must wear PPE. Before starting the activity the
Subcontractor Safety Supervisor and Officers will address to all work personnel as
well as concern Construction Supervisor regarding potential hazards and risk
involvement during the operation of concrete mansonry unit CMU activities. Safety
Team responsibilities and procedure is attached in AHA (Activit Hazard Analysis).

6. RESOURCES

6.1 Manpower

CMU Mason, Skilled and Unskilled workers, General Helpers, Safety Crew, Civil
supervisor. Engineer, Surveyor, QC personnel, mixer operator, scaffolders, Riggers
and Light duty drivers etc.

6.2 Tool’s and Equipment

Mortar mixing machine / tools, hand cutter, bucket, Hand Tools, water tanker and etc

6.3 Material

A. CMU Block shall comply ASTM C129

E. Potable water
F. Bonding agent ( if required)

7. PROCEDURE / METHOD STATEMENT CMU WORK

7.1 Composition / Mortar Mix

Type N or S mortar shall be used for non load bearing concrete masonry unit as per
section 04
20 00 para 2.5.1b

Type N mortar mix has a medium compressive strength and it is composed of 1 part
Portland cement, 1 part lime, and 6 parts sand. It is considered to be a general-purpose
mix, useful for above grade, exterior, and interior non load-bearing and load bearing CMU
installations. Type N is the mortar most often used by homeowners and is the best choice
for general application.
It typically achieves 28-day strength in the range of 750 pounds per square inch (psi).

Type S Mortar Mix

Type S high compressive strength of over 1,800 psi and a high-tensile bond strength, type
S mortar is suitable for below grade. It performs extremely well to withstand soil pressure
and wind and To get 1 cuyd of S mortar, you need 27 cubic feet of the components in a 2
to 1 to 9,
as per ASTM C270,
proportion.
Portland cement 4.5 cuft
Hydrated lime 2.25 cuft
Sand 20.25 cuft
Total 27 cuft
Three mix shall be made and six cube for compressive strength test.
The trial mix for cement mortar shall be witnessed by client representative and
compressive
strength test performed by third party independent laboratory.

7.2 PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLATION OF CMU

7.2.1 Concrete Surfaces Preparation

During execution of concrete masonry work the following procedure will be followed:
Where masonry is to be placed, clean concrete of laitance, dust, dirt, oil, organic matter, or
other
foreign materials and slightly shall be roughen to provide a surface texture with a depth of
at least 3 mm. Sandblast, if necessary, to remove laitance from pores and to expose the
aggregate.
- The trial mix for CMU mortar shall be performed and tested at third party laboratory for
confirmation of achieve the required strength of mortar.

7.2.2 Installation / Erection

- Coordinate masonry work shall be made with the work to accommodate built-in items
and to
avoid cutting and patching. Lay masonry units in running bond pattern. Lay facing courses
level
with back-up courses, unless the use of adjustable ties has been approved in which case
the
tolerances is plus or minus 13 mm. Adjust each unit to its final position while mortar is
still soft
and has plastic consistency.
- When necessary to temporarily discontinue the work, step back the masonry for joining
when

work resumes. Before resuming work, remove loose mortar and thoroughly clean the
exposed
joint. Cover the top of walls subjected to rain or snow with nonstaining waterproof
covering or
membrane when work is not in process. Extend the covering a minimum of down on each
side
of the wall and hold securely in place.
- Ensure that units being laid and surfaces to receive units are free of water film and frost.
Lay
solid units in a nonfurrowed full bed of mortar. Prevent mortar from dropping into the
space
below or clean mortar spaces prior to fill mortar.
- Steel dowels for vertical reinforcement for CMU will be fixed at the time of casting
concrete
for grade beam or CMU footing (for partition) as per approved drawings.
- Steel dowels for horizontal reinforcement for CMU will be fixed at the time of casting
concrete for columns as per approved drawings if required.
- Steel rebar for grade slab for block wall will be provided as per approved construction
drawings.
- In case, if fixing of steel dowels for horizontal reinforcement for CMU is not possible at
the
time of casting concrete for columns, dowel shall be inserted into columns by drilling
holes and
be anchored by using approved epoxy grout as per approved drawings.
- Any material prior to use shall be taken approval from client and conduct material
receiving
inspection.
- All block accessories shall be installed as per IFC drawing and U S Corps of ungineers
specification
- All CMU mortar joints should be uniformly struck and tooled.
- Top surface of grade beam/ wall footing shall be roughened by chipping and will be
dampened
by soaking with water at least 24 hours prior to start CMU block work.
- Horizontal steel ladder and tie angle will be provided at interval as per approved
construction
drawings and project specification.
- Dry CMUs shall be surface damped to obtain good bonding.
- CMU shall be handled safely to avoid chipping & breaking at site.
- CMU shall be laid in plumb and true to line with the horizontal joints.
- CMU shall be laid in a running bond. Where the CMU are laid in running bond, each
course
shall be bonded at corners in a masonry bond.
- Walls shall be built in a normal stretcher bond with the exception that on alternate
courses
purpose made half blocks shall be used to form a straight vertical joint.
- Mortar joint thickness will be 10-15 mm as required to produce a full block below wall
beam,
bond beam or roof beam.
- All the door heads & jambs will be provided as per project specification or as shown on
IFC drawings.

- Above 1.5 m height approved scaffolding will be used and full body harness will be used
at
all times.
- All the cells will be filled with approved grout or cement mortar prior to cast bond beam.
- Bond beams and bond column will be provided as per approved construction drawings
and
Project specification.
- Steel rebar for bond beam and bond column will be provided as per approved
construction / shop drawings,
- The distance of bond column and height of bond beam shall be made as per approved
shop Drawing.
- The rebar of bond column and height of bond beam shall be made as per approved shop
dwg.
- All cells till last course shall be filled by type N mortar.
- Grout will be completed for each layer and will be stopped at minimum 20 mm below
the top
of masonry to enable the grout to be interconnected with the layers.
- All the exposed surface of masonry shall be cleaned of loose mortar and stains by using
mason Brush.
- Curing shall not be started until mortar has thoroughly set.

7.2.3 Jointing

- Tool mortar joints when the mortar is thumbprint hard. Tool horizontal joints after
tooling vertical joints. Brush mortar joints to remove loose and excess mortar if
applicable.

7.2.4 Door and Window Frame Joints

- The exposed interior side of exterior frames, joints between frames and abutting
masonry walls
shall be raked to a depth of 10 mm. On the exterior side of exterior frames, joints between
frames and abutting masonry walls shall be raked to a depth of 10 mm.

7.2.5 Control Joints

- Provide control joints in concrete masonry as indicated. Construct by using special


controljoint
units in accordance with the details shown on the Drawings. Form a continuous vertical
joint
at control joint locations, including through bond beams, by utilizing half blocks in
alternating
courses on each side of the joint. Interrupt the control joint key in courses containing
continuous
bond beam reinforcement. Interrupt the horizontal reinforcement and grout in bond beams
at the
control joint except in bond beams at the floor and roof aphragms.
Where mortar was placed in the joint, rake both faces of the control joints to a depth of 19
mm.
Install backer rod and sealant on both faces in accordance with Section 07 92 00 JOINT
SEALANTS.

7.2.6 Preparation for Reinforcement

CMU block shall lay in such a manner as to preserve the unobstructed vertical continuity
of cores to be mortar. Remove mortar protrusions extending 13 mm or more into cells
before placing mortar.
Position reinforcing bars accurately as indicated before placing grout. Where vertical
reinforcement occurs, fill cores solid with mortar in accordance with specification.

7.2.7 Anchorage to Concrete

Anchorage of masonry to the face of concrete columns, beams, or walls shall be with
dovetail
anchors spaced not over 400 mm on centers vertically and 600 mm on center horizontally.

7.2.8 Positioning Bars

Accurately place vertical bars within the cells at the positions indicated on the drawings.
A minimum clearance of 13 mm shall be maintained between the bars and masonry units.
Provide
minimum clearance between parallel bars of13 mm between the bars and masonry units
for coarse
mortar and a minimum clearance of 6 mm between the bars and masonry units for fine
mortar.
Provide minimum clearance between parallel bars of 25 mm or one diameter of the
reinforcement, whichever is greater. Vertical reinforcement may be held in place using bar
positioners located near the ends of each bar As masonry work progresses, secure vertical
reinforcement to prevent displacement beyond allowable tolerances.

7.2.9 Placing of Mortar Grout

-Fill cells containing reinforcing bars with mortar grout. Solidly grout cells under lintel
bearings on each side of openings for full height of openings. Solidly grout walls below
grade, lintels, and bond beams. Units other than open end units may require grouting each
course to preclude voids in the units.
-Discard site-mixed grout that is not placed within 1-1/2 hours after water is first added to
the batch or when the specified slump is not met without adding water after initial mixing.
Allow sufficient time between grout lifts to preclude displacement or cracking of face
shells of masonry units.
Provide a grout shear key between lifts when grouting is delayed and the lower lift loses
plasticity.
If blowouts, flowouts, misalignment, or cracking of face shells should occur during
construction, tear down the wall and rebuild.
-A grout mortar pour is the total height of masonry to be filled prior to erection of
additional masonry. A grout lift is an increment of grout placement within a grout pour.
- Place grout using a hand bucket, concrete hopper, to fill the grout mortar in space .

7.2.10 Bond Beams

Reinforcement and concrete for the bond beam and bond column shall be constructed as
per IFC / approved shop drawing.

7.2.11 Protection

Protect facing materials against staining. Cover top of walls with nonstaining waterproof
covering or membrane to protect from moisture intrusion when work is not in progress.
Continue covering the top of the unfinished walls. Extend covering a minimum of 600
mm down on each side of the wall and hold securely in place. Before starting or resuming
work, clean top surface of masonry in place of loose mortar and foreign material.

8. QUALITY ASSURANCE

8.1 Mock-Up Panel Location

After material samples are approved and prior to starting masonry work, construct a
mock-up panel for each type of masonry required. At least 48 hours prior to constructing
the mock up panel , Inspection request shall be submitted to client. Mock-up panels shall
not be built as will not a part of the structure; location of mockup panel shall be in such
place that it will not obstruct the construction activity or as directed by client.

8.2 Mock-Up Panel Configuration

The mock-up panel shall be constructed L-shaped or otherwise configured to represent all
of the wall elements. Construct panels of the size necessary to demonstrate the acceptable
level of workmanship for each type of masonry represented on the project. Provide a
straight panel or a leg of an L-shaped panel of minimum size 2.5 m long by 1.8 m high.

8.3 Mock-Up Panel Composition

The mock up panel composition shall be full color range, texture, and bond pattern of the
masonry work. Showing mortar joint tooling; grouting of reinforced vertical cores, bond
beams, and lintels; positioning, securing, and lapping of reinforcing steel and cleaning of
masonry work during the construction of the panels. Also include installation or
application procedures for anchors, wall ties, CMU control joints. When the panel
represents reinforced masonry, include a 610 by 610 mm opening placed at least 610 mm
above the panel base and 610 mm away from all free edges. Provide required reinforcing
around this opening.

9. HOT AND COLD WEATHER

9.1 Hot Weather CMU Work

The following procedure or precaution shall be implemented during hot weather conctere
Prior to conducting masonry work:
a. The ambient air temperature should not exceeds 37.8°C, or 90°F (32.2°C) with a wind
velocity greater than 8 mph (12.9 km/hr):
b. The necessary conditions shall be equipt or ice to produce mortar having a temperature
below 120°F (48.9°C).

c. When the ambient temperature exceeds 46.1° or exceeds 40.6°C with a wind velocity
greater than 8 mph (12.9 km/hr), implement the requirements of Article 1.8 D.1.a and
mixing material shall be kept in shade area and mixing also to be performed in Shade area.
d. Mortar shall be mix in cold water to maintain the required mortar temperature after mix.
e. Mortar shall be maintain the consistency by retempering with cool water.
f. Mix mortar shall be used within two hours from initial mixing.
g. Ice is permitted in the mixing water prior to use. Do not permit ice in the mixing water
when added to the other mortar or grout materials.

9.2 Cold Weather CMU Work

If the ambient temperature is below 4.4°C cold weather procedures shall be comply
comply with the following:
a. The time of mixing. Maintain mortar temperature above freezing until used in masonry.
Heat grout and mixing water to produce grout temperature between 21.1°C and (48.9°C)
at the time of mixing. Maintain grout temperature above 21.1°C.
b. Heat masonry surfaces under construction to 40°F (4.4°C) and use wind breaks or
enclosures when the wind velocity exceeds 15 mph (24 km/h). Heat masonry to a
minimum of (4.4°C) prior to grouting.
c. Provide an enclosure and auxiliary heat to maintain air temperature above 0°C within
the enclosure.

9.3 Protection

Protect newly constructed masonry by covering with a weather-resistive membrane /


tarpoline sheet for 24 hr after being completed.
