1. A,B and C are three points on a straight line, in that order, and the distance AB and
AC are 45m and 77m respectively. A particle moves along the straight line with
constant acceleration 2𝑚𝑠 . given that it takes 5 seconds to travel from A to B, fid
the time taken to travel from A to C. [7]
2. A particle is projected vertically upwards with a speed of 30𝑚𝑠 . After 3 seconds,
another particle is projected vertically upwards from the same point with a speed of
25𝑚𝑠 . Find the height at which the two particles collide.(take 𝑔 = 10𝑚𝑠 )

3. A bus set off from a bus station p. it accelerates uniformly for T 1 seconds covering a
distance of 300m. It travels at a speed of 𝑉𝑘𝑚ℎ 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑇 seconds covering a further
distance of 1250m. It then decelerates uniformly for T 3 seconds, coming to rest at a
bus station Q. If the total time taken is 3 minutes and 2T1=3T3, find the distance PQ

4. A particle is projected vertically upwards from a point A. given that it raises 15m in
the third second of its motion, find its initial speed and maximum height above A

5. A ball is thrown at a speed 𝑢 𝑚𝑠 and an angle of projection 𝜃 just clears the top of
the fence 3.6m high and a horizontal distance of 9.6m from the point of projection.
Find 𝑢 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃 given that as the ball passes over the fence it is moving in horizontal

6. Two particles are projected simultaneously from two points A and B on level ground
and a distance of 150m apart. The first particle is projected vertically upwards from
A with an initial speed 𝑢 𝑚𝑠 and the second particle is projected from B towards A
with an angle of projection 𝛼. if the particles collide when they are both at their
greatest height above the level of AB. Prove that tan 𝛼 =

10. A uniform rod AB of mass 13kg is in limiting equilibrium with its lower end on a
rough horizontal plane and its upper end B attached at a light inextensible string

over a smooth pulley fixed at a point vertically above A and supports at its other end
a mass of 6.5kg. Find;
a. The coefficient of friction between the rod and the plane

11. A particle, A, is performing S.H.M about a point O with amplitude 2m and period

the instant when;
a. Its displacement is 1m
b. Its velocity is half that at O

12. An elastic string of natural length 2a and modulus 𝜑 has its end attached to two
points A B on a smooth horizontal table. The distance AB is 4a and C is the midpoint
of AB. A particle of mass m is attached to the midpoint of the string. The particle is
released from rest at D, the midpoint of CB. Denoting by x the displacement of the
particle from C,
a. show that the equation of motion of the particle is =− 𝑥
b. find the maximum speed of the particle and show that the time taken for the

13. A car of mass 2tonnes pulls a caravan of mass 400kg. The resistance to the motion
of the car is 1000N and the resistance to the caravan is 100N.
a. Find the acceleration of the car and the caravan at the instant when their
speed is 40𝑘𝑚ℎ with the power output of the engine equal to 100KW.
b. Find also the tension in the coupling between the car and the caravan at this

14. (a) The work done in stretching an elastic string from 3m to 5m in length is 4 joules.
If the modulus of the string is 3N, find its natural length. [2.4m]
(b) A particle of mass 5kg is projected with a speed of 2.8𝑚𝑠 down a rough plane
inclined at an angle 𝛽 to the horizontal, where sin 𝛽 = 5 13 . if the particle comes to
rest after travelling 2.6m, find the work done against friction. Find also the
coefficient of friction between the particle and the plane [68.6, 7 12 ]
(c) A pump raises water at the rate of 250 litres per minute through a vertical
distance of 8m and projects it into a lake at 2𝑚𝑠 . find the power developed by the
pump. [335W]
15. (a) Two forces of magnitude 16N and 24N act on a particle of mass 5kg. Given that
an acceleration of 6𝑚𝑠 is produced, find the angle between the lines of action of
the two forces. [84.9°]
(b) A particle of mass 5kg starting from rest is acted upon by a force of 12N for 10
seconds. The particle continues to move with a constant velocity for further 10
seconds. It’s then brought to rest by a constant resistance of RN in further 15
seconds. Find the value of R and the total distance travelled. [8540m]
16. (a)ABCD is a square of side 2m. Forces of magnitude 2N, 1N, 3N, 4N and 2√2N act
along AB, BC, CD, DA and BD respectively. In order to maintain equilibrium a force F,
whose line of action cuts AD produced at E has to be applied. Find
i. The magnitude of F
ii. The angle F makes with AD and

(b) Coplanar forces 𝐹 = 𝑖 − 2𝑗, 𝐹 = 3𝑖 + 4𝑗, 𝐹 = −5𝑖 + 𝑗 act at points

17. (a) Find the distance from PQ and PS of the centre of the mass of the folded sheet.
The folded sheet is freely suspended from the point S and hangs in equilibrium.
(b) Calculate the angle of inclination of the edge PS to the vertical [ 9 8 , 13 8 , 40.9°]
18. A uniform rectangular plate OABC has a mass 4m, OA=BC=2d and OC=AB=d.
particles of mass 2m, m, and 3m are attached at A, B and C respectively on the plate.
Find in terms of d, the distance of the centre of mass of the loaded plate.

ii. The corner of O of the loaded plate, is freely hinged to a fixed point

i. If the velocity of A is 5𝑖 + 2𝑗 , show that the least distance between A
and B subsequently is √5m
ii. If the speed of A is 5m/s and the particles collide, find the velocity of A

21. A destroyer must intercept a vessel 40km away on a bearing of 110° . the vessel is
sailing on a course of 200° at a speed of 20km/h. if the speed of the destroyer is
30km/h,
a. Find to the nearest degrees, the course it must steer.
b. Find also the time taken for the destroyer to reach the vessel.

22. A particle of mass 6kg rests on a rough horizontal plane. It is connected by a light
inextensible string passing over a smooth pulley at the edge of the plane to a particle

downwards with a velocity of 3.5m/s, it comes to rest after travelling a distance of
2.5m.
a. Find the coefficient of friction between particle A and the plane.
b. Find also the force exerted by the string on the pulley during motion
