1. What are roles of nurse leaders in the development of nursing informatics?

The role of the nursing leader encompasses clinical and managerial responsibilities that may vary
depending on clinical setting or placement in the organizational hierarchy. In looking at nursing
leadership literature through the context of informatics, it is apparent that leaders are pivotal to
technology integration in every arena of nursing practice. Nursing leaders require a variety of unique
skills, including informatics, to support the delivery of safe and effective patient care.Nursing leaders
who develop informatics competencies can work more effectively in ensuring the “successful selection,
development, and competent use of devices and clinical systems”.

2. What are the essential nursing informatics competencies of nurse leaders?

1. Mastery of basic computer competencies

 The concepts of information and communication technology (ICT)

 Using computers and managing files
 Using word processing and spreadsheet applications
 Making presentations
 Web browsing and basic communication

2. Comprehension of information literacy

The American Library Association (ALA) defines information literacy as the ability to recognize when
information is needed and to be able to locate, evaluate and use the information as necessary.

 Determining the nature and amount of information needed

 Accessing the information quickly and efficiently
 Evaluating the information and sources
 Using the information for specific purposes
 Assessing the value of the information used
3. Understanding information management literacy

Information management is the process of collecting, processing, presenting and communicating data as
knowledge or information.

 Understanding and verbalizing the importance of various types of health information systems
(systems used to manage healthcare data) in clinical practice
 Using due care to protect patient privacy and the security of health information systems
 Understanding the principles, policies and procedure that health information systems use to
manage data

3. In what ways can the nurse leaders develop their nursing informatics competencies?

Informatics competencies for nursing leaders were developed through review of the literature and
validated through a Delphi approach. The investigators used the AONE Nursing Executive Competencies
to identify the roles and functions of the nursing executive or nursing leaders aspiring to be executives.
Informatics competencies from the literature were identified. Competencies from each of these sources
were categorized as computer skills, informatics knowledge and informatics skills, using the framework
developed by Staggers, Gassert, and Curran. The combined competencies were then evaluated for
redundancy and reworded for consistency. The initial list of competencies was again compared with
AONE’s Nursing Executive Competencies. Some items were deleted, others reworded, and additional
competencies added to reflect the role and functions of nursing leaders. Further subcategories were
identified for categorizing competencies.

4. What are the innovations in nursing leadership roles in relation to nursing informatics?

Future nurse executives who develop NI competencies and seek new informatics executive roles will be
well positioned to provide transformative leadership that drives patient safety, high-quality care delivery
models and knowledge-driven care through practice-based evidence. Further, organizations adopting
CNIO roles will achieve significant and tangible return on investments, including successful deployment
and adoption of information and communication technologies that are clinically relevant, efficient and
effective and meet fiscal and clinical benchmarks. This future landscape reflects a transformed
healthcare system that is the obligation of nurse leaders and the profession.
