10.a i) A steel tube (k=43.26W/mK) of 5.08cm inner dia and 7.62cm

outer dia is covered with 2.5cm layer of insulation
(K=0.208W/mK) the inside surface of the tube receivers heat from
hot gas at the temperature of 316 0C with heat transfer co-efficient 10 L5 CO1 2 2.4.1
of 28W/m2 K. While the outer surface exposed to ambient air at
300C with heat transfer co-efficient of 17W/m2 K.Calculate heat
loss for 3m length of the tube

[OR]

10.b A surface wall is made up of 3 layers one of fire brick, one of

insulating brick and one red brick. The inner and outer surface
temperatures are 9000C and 300C respectively. the respective co-
efficient of thermal conductivity of the layers are 1.2,0.14,and 0.9 10 L5 CO1 2 2.4.1
W/mK and the thickness of 20cm,8cm and 11cm Assuming close
bonding of the layers at the interfaces. Find the heat loss per
square meter and interface temperatures.
11.a Ten thin brass fins (k=100W/mK), 0.75mm thick are placed
axially on a 1m long and 60mm dia engine cylinder which is
surrounded by 270C the fins are extended 1.5cm from the cylinder
surface and the heat transfer co-eeficient between cylinder and 10 L5 CO1 2 2.4.1
atmospheric air is 15 W/m2 K. Calculate the rate of heat transfer
and temperature at the end of fins when the cylinder surface is at
1600c.
[OR]
11.b i) A Plane wall 10cm thick generates heat at the rate of
4x104W/m3 when an electric current is passed through it the
convective heat transfer co-efficient between each face of the wall
and the ambient air is 50W/m2 K.Determine
(a) the surface temperature 10 L5 CO1 2 2.4.1
(b) the maximum air temperature on the wall. Assume the ambient
air temperature to be 200C and the thermal conductivity of the wall
material to be 15W/mK.

PART – C ( 1 12 = 12 Marks) Marks BT Cos PO PI

12.a Derive the general heat conduction equation in cylindrical

coordinates
[OR]
12.b A large iron plane of 10cm thickness and originally at 800 0C is
suddenly exposed to an environment at 0 0C where the convection
co-efficient is 50 W/m2 K.Calculate the temperature at depth of
4cm from one of the faces 100sec after the plate is exposed to the 12 L5 CO1 2 2.4.1
