Tyre Care

Changing a Tyre

1 Turn off the car engine

2 Engage the handbrake and put the

car in ‘PARK’ if automatic, or 1st
gear if manual

3 If your car has hazard lights put them on. Some new cars also
have hazard warning signs that you can place on the road to
warn oncoming traffic to be cautious

4 Chock the three wheels, which you are not replacing.

Chocking is when you put something behind the wheel to stop it
from moving. You can buy car chocks designed specifically for
this purpose or use a house brick

5 Take the spare wheel, jack and nut wrench out of the boot and
lay them on the footpath. Take out your torch if it is getting dark

6 If your car wheel has a hubcap,

remove it to expose the wheel
nuts. (Photo A)

7 Use the wheel brace to loosen

the nuts by turning them one B
revolution anti-clockwise to
the left (Photo B)

8 Place the jack in the right

position of the car known as
C
the ‘jack point’. This point is the
centre pillar of the car (Photo C)

9 Raise the car until the wheel is

off the ground

10 DO NOT PUT ANY PART OF

YOUR BODY UNDER THE CAR
WHILST IT IS ON THE JACK!

11 Further loosen all of the nuts,

remove them and place them
next to you on the footpath

12 Remove the tyre. Be careful as wheels are heavier than you

might think! Place the flat tyre half under the car (next to
the jack) JUST in case the jack fails. This stops the car from
falling right to the road.

13 Place the new tyre onto the car

14 Screw on the nuts by hand turning them clockwise to the right

and then tighten them with the nut wrench. Make sure that
you tighten them evenly

15 Use the jack to lower the car

16 If you have a hubcap, remember to replace it now and give it a

hard tap to make sure that it does not fall off whilst you’re driving

17 Place the flat tyre in the boot of the car

18 Wipe your hands and check

to see that you have not left
anything behind

19 Make sure that you go to a tyre centre as soon as

you can and have the flat tyre replaced and your
wheels balanced and alignment checked

20 Practise a few times!
