Moment
• The tendency of Force to cause rotation
• The Moment determine the tendency of Force to
cause rotation
Let,
Force applied = F(N)
Moment arm = r(m)
• Moment of a Force (F) about point "o"

– Mo = r  F

 Moment is also referred as torque

4
Moment vs Torque
• Moment arm:
 Longitudinal axis
 Radial Axis

5
Algebraic Sign for Moment
• Anti-clockwise (c.c.w) direction. (+ive)
• Clockwise (c.w) direction. (-ive)

6
Right Hand Rule
• Curl your right hand figure in the direction, in which
force rotates the body.
• The thumb will give you the direction of moment or
perpendicular to the plane (where rotation occurs)
• So from the direction of normal to the plane we can
determine direction of rotation or moment.

7
Moment Example

r = position
vector
directed from
O to any
point on the
line of
action of F

8
Moment
• Magnitude of Moment
– tendency of F to cause rotation of the
body about an axis along MO
M O  rF sin  F(r sin)  Fd

9
Moment
• Principle of Transmissibility
– The effect or the resultant of forces acting
along a given line of action will remain
unchanged, if we shift the point of application of
the force along the line of action.

10
Moment
• Varignon’s Theorem
– Moment of a force about a point is equal to
the sum of the moments of the components of
the force about the same point

11
Moment of a System of Concurrent Forces
• Varignon’s Theorem
– Moment of the resultant of a system of
concurrent forces about a point is equal to the
sum of the moments of the of the individual
forces about the same point
