Online Class Module 1:

INTEGRATION BY PARTS
Lecture:
The method of integration by parts is based on the product rule for differentiation:

[f(x)g(x)]’ = f ’(x)g(x) + f(x)g’(x),

which we can write like this:

f(x)g’(x) = [f(x)g(x)]’−f ’(x)g(x)

Integrating we get:

ʃ f(x)g’(x)dx = ʃ [f(x)g(x)]’dx − ʃ g(x)f’(x)dx,

i.e.:

ʃ f(x)g’(x)dx = f(x)g(x) − ʃ g(x)f ’(x)dx

Writing u = f(x), v = g(x), we have du = f ’(x)dx, dv = g’(x)dx, hence:

ʃ udv = uv− ʃ
Example:
vdu
Use integration by parts to find the given integrals:

1.) ʃ xlnx2dx
2.) ʃ (x + 1) (x + 2)6 dx
3.) ʃ x3e2xdx
Solution:

1.) ʃ xlnx2dx
In this case, the factor x is easy to integrate, while the factor lnx 2 can easily be simplified through
differentiation. This suggests that you try integration by parts with

u= lnx2 dv= x dx
du=2/x dx v=x2/2

So,
ʃ lnx2 xdx = ( lnx2)( x2/2) – ʃ (x2/2) 2/x dx
= ( lnx2)( x2/2) – ʃ x dx = ( lnx2)( x2/2) - ( x2/2) + c
= ( x2/2) (lnx2 – 1) +c

2.) ʃ (x + 1) (x + 2)6 dx
Since the factor (x + 2)6 is easy to integrate and the factor x +1 is simplified by differentiation,
try integration by parts with

u= (x+1) dv= (x + 2)6 dx

1
du=1 dx v= (x + 2)7
7

So,
1 1
ʃ (x + 1) (x + 2)6 dx = 7 (x + 1)(x + 2)7 - 7
ʃ (x + 2)7dx
1 1 1
= (x + 1)(x + 2)7 - • (x + 2)8 + c
7 7 8
1
= (7x + 6)(x + 2)7 + c
56
3.) ʃ x3e2xdx
Since the factor e2x is easy to integrate and the factor x3 is simplified by differentiation, try
integration by parts with

u= x3 dv= e2x dx
1 2x
du=3x2 dx v= e
2
So,
1 3
ʃ x3e2xdx = 2 x3e2x - 2 ʃ x2e2xdx ①
To find ʃ x2e2xdx, you have to integrate by parts again, but this time with,

u= x2 dv= e2x dx
1 2x
du=2x dx v= e
2
1
ʃ x2e2xdx = 2 x2e2x - ʃ xe2xdx ②

To find ʃ xe2xdx, you have to integrate by parts again, but this time with

u= x dv= e2x dx
1 2x
du=dx v= e
2
1 1
ʃ xe2xdx = 2 xe2x - 2 ʃ e2x dx ③

Then,
Subs. ② to ①, we can get,

1 3 1
ʃ x3e2xdx = 2 x3e2x - 2 ( 2 x2e2x - ʃ xe2xdx) ④

Finally,
Subs. ③ to ④, we can get,

1 3 1 1 1
ʃ x3e2xdx = 2 x3e2x - 2 ( 2 x2e2x – ( 2 xe2x - 2 ʃ e2x dx))
1 3 3 2 3 3 2x
=(
2x - 4 x + 4 x - 8 ) e + c
