Installation Guide 1
Basic installation options
If this EDU version of Torchmate CAD is the first instance of TM CAD ever to be installed
on your machine, your installation is straightforward and simple. If you have had another
version of TM CAD on the machine there are some additional steps to ensure that the
software installs correctly. This document will walk you through both options.
EDU version • The Torchmate CAD EDU version is specially designed for classroom
work so that an instructor can lead a class of students through the
use of Torchmate CAD software for use with CNC cutting machines.
• A single instance of the EDU-M (master) version of the software can
be used to produce files for cutting, giving the instructor control
of the cutting equipment, while any number of student computers
running the EDU-S (student) version of the software can produce
drawing files using the full Torchmate CAD feature set.
First install • When a classroom is being setup with the EDU version, the instructor
will select where to install the EDU-M version of the software. If the
instructor’s computer is getting Torchmate CAD software installed for
the first time, the method for installation is easy and takes just a few
minutes.
Upgrade install • The recommended practice for installing the EDU version on a
computer that is already running a “standard” version of TM-CAD
is to first uninstall the standard version and then install the EDU
version. While this is a little more involved than a first install, it
generally provides a very easy installation as well.
• Since the EDU-M version provides nearly all of the “standard”
features (and more), no basic capabilities are lost by uninstalling
the “standard” version.
• Again, it is not recommended, but by moving the locations of
some critical files, it is possible to have both the EDU-M version
and the “standard” version installed on the instructor’s computer
at the same time.
• Your dongle contains an electronic key that is required by TM-CAD Electronic Key
EDU. It has a USB interface and looks a little like the silver USB flash
drive that you may have received (instead of an optical disk) that
contains software and documentation, but you won’t confuse them.
The dongle is bright orange.
• When you launch the installer (more on this to follow), you will License files
eventually see the blue and black screen below that reminds you to
insert your dongle into an empty USB port on your laptop or desktop
computer. The installer will automatically look for the license files in
the dongle’s Flash drive root folder, but if they are not there, it will
look elsewhere for the license files, in the folder you will specify.
• After your TM-CAD EDU software is installed, whenever you run the Leave the dongle in
program, it checks to see that the dongle is present in a USB port. the USB drive while
• NOTE: If you receive a dongle security error message when running TM-CAD
starting or operating your software, verify that the dongle is fully EDU-M
seated in the computer port. If the error persists, please call
Torchmate Technical Support.

Installation Guide 3
Where are the license files?
There are two license files that TM-CAD EDU-M requires to be present on your comput-
er. For a first installation of TM-CAD, the installer will find them in the dongle and copy
them to the program’s folder. For a second installation, it’s best to create a new folder
on your hard drive and put the license files there. Then you can remove the dongle and
begin the installation, identifying the new folder when asked by the installer.
In the dongle • You receive a security dongle with your first purchase of TM-CAD,
to begin with but if you already have installed it, there is no need for a second
dongle. One dongle is sufficient to provide the security code.
• For a first purchase, the license files you need will be located in
the root folder of the orange dongle’s Flash drive.
In the program media • With a later purchase, your license files will come with your
installation media (CD or silver USB Flash drive).
• For a second purchase, we recommend that you delete the
first version. In this case, you will remove the dongle during
installation, so that the old license files will not be found.
• You will copy your new license files to a hard drive folder and
specify that folder to the installer when requested.
Ending up in the • Whether the installer locates the license files in the root of the dongle
program folder (first install) or in a folder you make on the hard drive, the installer will
copy the license files to the program folder where TM-CAD EDU-M
will use them, typically C:\Torchmate EDU-M.
• Whether you receive your software installation on a CD or on a Silver Run the setup.exe
USB Flash drive, use Windows Explorer to look in the installation program
folder. Find and start the start.exe program.
• The operating system may request authorization to continue, you’ll
be asked to select a language for the installer (not the CAD software),
and you must agree to the license agreement.
• The installer will perform the install and install the font set, then finish.
Installation Guide 5
Remove the previous TM-CAD installation
If the instructor’s computer has had a previous version of TM-CAD installed, such as
version 7 or version 8, the recommended procedure is to uninstall it before installing TM-
CAD EDU-M. This will not only simplify the process of installation and troubleshooting,
but will also simplify operations.
Use the normal • When you uninstall previous TM-CAD software before installing TM-
uninstall method CAD EDU-M, it makes for an easier install and easier operation.
• Uninstalling TM-CAD is like uninstalling other software in Microsoft
Windows®. Use the Add and Remove Programs Control Panel.
• After beginning the uninstall, continue through to the Finish screen.
• The next step will be to install TM-CAD EDU-M.
• When you uninstall any previous versions of TM-CAD before What is the tradeoff?
installing TM-CAD EDU-M, you lose the ability to save .CDL files. You
will still be able to open existing .CDL files (and .EDU files), but you
can only save them in the .EDU file format.
• This will only be an issue if you must make edits to .CDL files and
send them to someone else running a previous TM-CAD version
that cannot open .EDU files. This is not often a requirement.
• The risk of leaving a previous TM-CAD version in place includes the
complexity and confusion of maintaining and operating two different
versions on the same machine. You’ll have two identical icons.
• In the event that you would need help troubleshooting a problem
with either version, the presence of two or more versions can
also complicate matters for the Torchmate Technical Support
Specialists when you call.
• In order to install TM-CAD EDU-M leaving the previous version Proceed with the
in place, you must remove the orange security dongle during installation
installation.
• You must remember to remove the dongle, temporarily, even
though you receive a reminder from the installer to insert it. The
reminder is for a first-time install, with the license files residing in
the dongle. But, in this case, if the installer finds the dongle, the
wrong license files will be used and the installation will fail.
• You then copy the license files provided with TM-CAD EDU-M
to a folder you create on the hard drive. Specify this folder to the
installer when it requests the license file location.
• Then run setup.exe to begin the installation normally.

What is different about the student version?
There are two major differences between the TM-CAD EDU-M (master) version and the
TM-CAD EDU-S (student) version. First, the student version requires no security dongle
and can be installed on any number of student computers, and second, the student
version cannot export files for cutting. Any .EDU files the student saves must be opened
with the instructor’s EDU-M version, which can export it for cutting.
TM-CAD EDU-M • Torchmate Driver software is used to control the CNC Cutting
works together with System (table). It performs two major functions:
Torchmate Driver • It imports .DXF format cutting files and converts them to
software executable G-code (.FGC files), and
• It uses the .FGC files to perform cutting using the Torchmate
CNC Controller and the Cutting System table.
• Without .DXF or .FGC files, the Driver software cannot operate.
No exporting of • However, the EDU-S version cannot export cuttable files. The flow
cutting files of files must proceed from the student’s computer to the instructor’s
EDU-M computer, and then to the Torchmate Driver software, which
is connected to the cutting table.
• That way, students cutting without instructor supervision is restricted.
• If share folder on the network that contains the installation files, Installation of the
each machine that can access that share can be easily installed. EDU-S version
You can also insert a USB Flash drive or optical disk containing the
installation files into each machine to perform the installation.
• No license files or security dongle are required for EDU-S (student)
installations.
• Many schools and classroom settings have IT policies in place that Classroom IT policies
can affect the installation of software. If this presents any issue,
please have the school’s IT administrator contact a Torchmate
Technical Support Specialist to discuss the software installation
requirements.
• The student version may be uninstalled and reinstalled as often as Classroom refresh and
necessary for classroom use, typically at the end of each classroom Multi-cast installation
session, phase, quarter, or semester. This gives each incoming
student a fresh install to work with.
• There are many resources available to classroom IT
administrators for simultaneous installation of software, such as
the EDU-S (student) version of the TM-CAD software, to multiple
classroom computers.
• Torchmate encourages the use of these tools, but does not
support them individually, as there are too many variations in
classroom settings, requirements, and software usage.
• If a problem arises with the installation files, please contact
Torchmate Technical Support. For problems with simultaneous
installation software, please contact the vendor for that software.
