Jennifer Veremis, Dear Mayor Moriey, 1am writing this letter of intent to be considered for the open position of Ward 1 Alderman, formerly held by Mark Sabatino. | believe my skills as a local business owner and community leader bring value to the position. | would be a great representative of the 1st Ward, the council, and the greater Elmhurst community. I believe I'm an excellent candidate for Ward 1 Alderman because | understand the heartbeat of this town. I'm a successful, seasoned, long-time business owner who knows Elmhurst and its residents well ‘Due to the nature of my business background, one of my strengths is connecting and effectively ‘communicating with all kinds of people. This quality is a must for any elected official. I've built trusted relationships with the residents and business owners in Ward 1 and throughout Elmhurst. It's also one reason | ran (and won) for the City Centre Board of Directors. My recent activity in the community shows my capability and potential. Ihave always led from a place of integrity and my values. | have strong leadership skills, work ‘well within a group, and examine situations from all perspectives. | am goal orientated, authentic in my convictions, and capable of making important decisions. | understand how to work in my strengths but wise enough to know my limitations. | moved to Elmhurst over 20 years ago. During my first year of college, | started a nail salon in ‘my mother’s kitchen. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, and at twenty-four years old, | decided to follow in my family’s footsteps and open my first business in Downtown Elmhurst. For the past 16 years, The Beauty Lounge Inc. has been known as a neighborhood gem. When | started my small business, | barely had the internet as a resource. Times and business have certainly changed, and I've proven to be resourceful and adaptable. Sixteen years later. clients travel to Elmhurst from all over Chicagoland for our services. | weathered the great recession of 2008 and learned how to be fiscally responsible, transforming The Beauty Lounge into a six-figure Main Street business. Ihave always been a strong advocate for small businesses, and last year, | went back to school to earn my business coaching certification. | recently started a new company, Goal.Get Her Inc., a lifestyle and business coaching firm to apply my passion and knowledge and use it in a different capacity. By far, one of my greatest passions in life is not only my love for Golden Retrievers, but for our Veterans and active servicemen and women. Since 2015 | have been an active volunteer, leader, and trainer for the USO of Illinois. Along with serving at the centers in O'Hare, | welcome home those returning from deployment and assist Great Lake Navy grads. When asked by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, | worked with the USO to ensure a presence in The Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade for the past few years. In 2019, | co-chaired a successful community-wide USO fundraiser leading up to The Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade. Ithas been a privilege and an honor to represent not only the USO but also Elmhurst. My leadership skills shined through when I represented my neighborhood, the Pick Subdivision, in leading our community activism in 2019. We believed a gas station at the comer of Route 83 and St. Charles did not meet the conditional uses and would negatively impact our community as a whole. | worked with residents and local officials to present our case in a positive, yet effective manner. In April 2019, the Elmhurst Zoning & Planning Commission unanimously rejected the developers’ plan. A month later the developer withdrew their petition. As a thank you to The City of Elmhurst and in good faith, | reached out to Villa Park Trustees and organized a Salt CreekiPrairie Path cleanup. | was able to demonstrate what our community can ‘accomplish when we work together, a testament to my leadership. During my time in Elmhurst, our town has flourished before my eyes and | would love to help drive its continued growth. Through goal setting and strategic planning, | have proven my ability to successfully manage a business through difficult times, and I'm eager to contribute and collaborate to help our city as we weather the current and future challenges. To put it simply: I love Elmhurst. 'm committed to this town. I've embraced and understood the value of economic growth. Along with growth, | believe in building healthy neighborhoods to keep our community vibrant and strong, and that's what I will bring to Ward 1 if given the opportunity to serve. My resume outlines my professional experience in both realms of my career path, and speaks for itself. Living in Elmhurst for 29 years, | have a long, full history of service to our community. While raising four children, | actively participated and volunteered for school, church, and community activities. | began my service as a Eucharistic Minister for Visitation Catholic Church, making weekly visits to Elmhurst Hospital patients on behalf of the clergy to provide the Sacrament to those in need. When Visitation was in need of a head coach for both cross-country and track & field, | stepped up and offered my services, as | am an avid tunner/marathoner. | created a successful program for both sports under the mentorship of Coach Joe Newton, growing the teams to over 65 and 130 athletes respectively. Many of my runners went on to be members of York's elite top seven over the years, representing our community at numerous state championship meets. | continued coaching for a total of 12 years, eventually merging the Visitation and Immaculate Conception cross- country teams to the delight of both parishes. ‘While voting in almost every election since | was in college, | have continued to be an objective participant in our electoral process, remaining independent. | believe in impartial assessment of issues and candidates, choosing to support those based on merit. I have participated in a grass roots organization that promotes voter registration and volunteered to collect petitions to place the Independent Map Amendment before voters. These past few months | have been mentoring Ilinois adult educators individually and through appearances on statewide webinars to instruct and model best practices in online learning techniques. Additionally, | have been volunteering on a regular basis at Elmhurst- Yorkfield Food Pantry, as the need of our community members has significantly increased. I'd like to continue my service to the Elmhurst community by becoming an alderman, participating in the legislative process. My business experience, extensive management skills, and employment in public education have provided me with a unique background that makes me an ideal candidate to become part of the Elmhurst City Council. Throughout my career, | have been able to successfully move between the corporate world and public education. By designing regulatory, operational, educational, and athletic programs and facilitating implementation of these programs and plans, | have demonstrated my broad-based ability to set and meet goals, effectively communicate, and skillfully provide information and instruction.
