As I approach the writing of this newsletter article this month, I must admit that I am a bit stymied. Meaning, I find it
hard to know what to write. It is not that there is nothing to write about, it is that there is too much. Part of my
difficulty is also “market-driven.” That means I ask myself what you might want to hear from your pastor at a time
like this. I do care about that. I also know that you, like me, are already deluged by all kinds of thoughts and ideas
from many others who feel the need to share their opinions with you. Maybe what you would like to hear from your
pastor is something nice and light and lively, or maybe a feel-good devotional piece. Such an approach would not
exactly be a bad idea for a newsletter article.
At the same time it is hard to ignore everything that is going on in our country and our world. I have heard it said
that we were experiencing the problems of 1918, when they were facing an epidemic, with those of 1930 when they
were dealing with the depression. Now we’ve added the social unrest and rioting of 1968. These are very difficult and
very trying times, and there probably is no quick and ready end to our trials. How much more can we take? If an
outside power wanted to use our current fragility to further bring us down, could they? Certainly we are being mightily
tried. We will find out just how strong we are.
As a citizen I am certainly concerned with the strength of our nation. As a pastor I am also concerned with the
strength of our church and the strength of our faith as individuals. What does our faith have to say at a time like this?
I will not pretend to be a prophet and predict how all this will turn out. I also will not pretend that I have all the right
answers and solutions for how to deal with all we are facing. I will, though, speak to faith in the midst of these trying
and uncertain times. People of faith have regularly dealt with trying and uncertain times. Our faith can never be in our
institutions, our economies, our political parties, or our leaders. Our faith can only be in God, who holds steady
regardless of whatever is going on around us. Psalm 46 tells us, “We will not fear though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble
with its tumult.”
I will not suggest that we should not notice or be concerned with the difficulties and trials we face as citizens. That is
probably not possible and it would certainly not be responsible. I will say that as people of faith we are able to take a
longer, broader view. The world and the future are in God’s hands. Therefore, no matter what we face, no matter
what the future may hold, the world, and we ourselves, are in God’s hands. As the prophet Isaiah told us, “In
quietness and confidence shall our strength be.”
Let it be so.

2. Tim Flora, the Property Management committee chair, discussed the need to replace 2 of our furnaces before
this Fall. In mid-May Ohler and Holzhauer were to have been out to our church to check our furnaces and to
service them as needed – as a courtesy to our church they will only bill us for parts and fees that may be
incurred. But Tim knows that 2 of the furnaces are very old and simply must be replaced. This was his
recommendation and after discussion session agreed; the furnaces in question will be replaced by October
2020.
3. Mark has been asked to perform a baptism for McKenzie Gutman, the granddaughter of Rob and Cindy
Gutman. This will take place at some mutually acceptable time in the near future.
