SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

Simple future has two different forms in English: will and be going to. Although the two forms can sometimes be
used interchangeably, they often express two vey different meanings. Both will and be going to refer to a specific
time in the future.

1.Will to express a voluntary action.

Will often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is when the speaker offers to
do something for someone else. Similarly, we use will not or won’t when we refuse to voluntarily do something.

Examples:

 I’ll get the phone.

 I will do the sandwiches.
 Will you help me move to my new house?
 Will you make lunch?

2.Will to express a promise.

Will is usually used in promises.

Examples:

 I will help you when I finish.

 I won’t tell him the truth.
 Don’t worry. I’ll be careful.
 I will not give you trouble.

3.Be going to for expressing a plan.

Be going to is used to express that something is a plan. It does not matter whether the plan is realistic or not.
Examples:

 He is going to travel to Hawaii.

 She is not going to travel to Mexico.
 I’m going to be an actor when I grow up.
 They are going to drive all day long to Alaska.

4. Will to express a prediction.

Will is used to express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Predictions are guesses about what might
happen in the future. The subject usually doesn’t have control over the future and therefore could not apply.

Examples:

 I think it will rain today.

 It seems this roof will fall down.
 Juanes will win another Grammy award.

REMEMBER: Native people sometimes express predictions with ‘be going to’

For example:

 Next year is going to be very interesting.

5. No future in time clauses.

The simple future cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions such as: when, while, before, after, by
the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc.

Use simple present instead of simple future.

Examples:

 When you will finish the test, we will go out dancing. Not correct
 When you finish the test, we will go out dancing. Correct

Affirmative form: (Subject + aux will + verb + complement)

I will buy a new cellphone next week.

Negative form: (Subject + aux will + not + verb + complement)

He will not (won’t) make dinner tonight.

Interrogative form: (Aux will + subject + verb + complement + ?)

Will you travel to Germany next year? Yes, I will / No, I won’t
