The purpose of this talk is to explain;

To ensure all recipients of this talk have a basic understanding of general safety principles for using
chemical substances.

Talk Content:

 Be sure you read all labels and follow instructions for use. Do not use any substance for which you
haven’t read, understood and signed the associated COSHH Assessment.

 Use any protective clothing (PPE) described in the COSHH Assessment

 Do not mix chemicals unless the COSHH Assessment specifically states this is the correct thing to
do

 Always keep substances in their original packaging unless the COSHH Assessment specifically says
it can be decanted – and never put chemicals in unmarked containers and NEVER (EVER) use any
container that has previously been used for storing food or drink, regardless of any labelling

 Be sure you know the first aid treatment required if you accidently spill chemicals on yourselves or
others.

 Always store chemicals appropriately when not in use – this will be detailed in the COSHH
Assessment.

 Never eat, drink or smoke whilst using chemicals and always wash your hands before and after
eating, or visiting the toilet.

 Never use more of a substance than you have to, and always work in a tidy and organised manner

 Always dispose of hazardous substances correctly – speak with site services if unsure.

 If you find anything wrong – report it to your supervisor.

REMEMBER – THESE ARE GENERAL PRINCIPLES RATHER THAN COMPLETE SAFETY RULES – ALWAYS CHECK
THE COSHH ASSESSMENT IF UNSURE
