Chapter 1

Introduction

In today's world we can see ninety five percent of diets fail and most will

regain their lost weight in one to five years. Has this been due to the fact that

we have been given the wrong premises to being healthier? Or maybe

perhaps it is due to our wrong understanding to what works and what really is

just out there for money scams. But we must also ask ourselves some

questions, as Muslims we all know that Quran has been sent down to us for

all times, as well as that Quran has many parts to it which help us in our daily

lives. Quran is a miracle from Allah and it is fitting that even nutrition is

mentioned in Quran many times. Allah repeatedly tells us to reflect upon His

ayats, and nutrition is of no exception. Many of us go day by day eating and

drinking all day with no thought about its benefits or its harms. We have seen

a rise in dietary supplements and a rise in people wanting to become healthy.

Has Quran given us the knowledge of nutrition and a way of life that helps

answer our many dietary questions? Has Islam answered the questions of

many diet seekers out there on how to have a healthier life, or how to lose

2
weight? Islam many years ago came to give the answer to those seeking to

be having a healthier eating lifestyle or to lose weight, Islam answered all

their wants for a proper and nutritional diet but many cease to realize and try

frantically to find it with going from one diet to another, and many diets have

you taking out very beneficial foods. In this project I am going to discuss

nutrition and their etiquettes which have been mentioned in Quran and

hadith. This is a very important topic to understand and implement in our

lives because everything we consume has either certain or probable benefit

to us or can actually cause us some harm, not just bodily but spiritually. Later

on in this project I will share how Merciful Allah is that even if we consume

not good food or drink for ourselves by mistake He has inscribed fasting,

fasting has many benefits and one of them is it helps to rid the body of the

bad in it, but I’ll leave the rest for later. In sha Allah I will start off by a brief

explanation to maslaha (‫ )ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬as this may help us understand whats does

it mean when we say phrases like “this benefits us” , then I will go through

ayats and hadiths and explanations to them with using proof from nutrition

guides and scientific findings, this will include discussion on halal (‫)ﺣﻼل‬

consumptions and the benefits to keeping to halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬regulations. After

this I will discuss haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬

َ consumptions and the benefits to refraining

from that which Allah has declared forbidden for us, I will then discuss

3
etiquettes towards food and drinks as you will soon find out why this part is

needed in this project, after this I would like to write briefly on food diets in

today's world and what it all means to our health and determine if it is healthy

for us or not and then I will conclude my project with an overall view on my

writing.

Chapter 2

Maslaha (‫)ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬

2.1

I want to start this chapter off by giving a few definition as I will be using them

throughout this project. First is to explain what halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬and haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬
َ

means. Then I will explain what maslaha (‫ )ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬means and why it's

important to know this in regards to things we consume.

First haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬

َ means something not permissible to do, as Muslims an

example could be “haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬

َ food” this means it is not permissible to eat it.

Halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬is the opposite to haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬

َ and which is defined in English as

that which is permissible to do. You may often here halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods, this

means the foods on which every Muslim is permitted to eat.

4
Now you may be wondering who says what is halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬and what is haram

(‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬
َ in regards to food or drinks. As Muslims we believe that Allah SWT has

granted us permission to consume something and He has also forbidden us

to consume other things. It is good to note here for my dear readers is that

which are halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬to eat has many benefit for us as humans and those

that have been deemed impermissible to eat or drink are those things that

are a hundred percent harmful to us. Now I will move on to the next part of

my chapter which is maslaha (‫)ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬.

2.2

What is maslaha (‫ ?)ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬By definition maslaha (‫ )ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬is behind laws

(fiqh) this includes what is behind halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬and what is behind haram (‫َﺣ َﺮام‬

). When wanting to translate maslaha (‫ )ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬into English one can say by

definition it is a benefit or expediency. There are three types of maslaha (

‫ )ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬which are material benefits such as the body needs food, spiritual

benefits such as nearness to God or both. I want to discuss this as a chapter

because this is very important as it is related to everything we do that

includes the consumption of halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods which are beneficial foods

5
given to us by Allah SWT as well as haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬
َ foods which have zero

benefit to them but even more so a hundred percent harmful to us.

2.3

Probable maslaha (‫)ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬, what is probable maslaha (‫ ?)ﻣـَﺼﻠـَﺤـَﺔ‬Well on an

epistemological scale we see on one side we have ignorance and the other

side is certainty and in the middle would be doubt 50/50. The probable is

more than the doubt but it is not a hundred percent certainty. So if you do

something for a spiritual benefits with intentions that it's for God but you're

not certain that it is known to have a benefit spiritually it is probable that it

may happen and you'll get a spiritual benefit out of it.

When we discuss food or drink, Allah SWT has given us by tashri (legislative

laws) what is allowed to consume and what is not. One of the reasons for this

is what we call takwin (natural system) such as we eat good, we get energy.

The whole universe is created on takwin. So Allah SWT who has created this

world is by far the best to tell us what is good for us and what is not, one of

those which we should abide by is food and drink consumption, even if we

may not fully understand the reason behind what Allah SWT has forbidden or

that which He has made permissible. This is clear as we all know that today's

6
there are scientists who are still discovering that some foods or drinks that in

past may have been seen as ok and not harmful but now have been

discovered that they can actually have a negative effect on our bodies. We

also know that these scientist are discovering new things in this regards all

the time. Now that being said intellectually we know that relying on what they

say is good or bad for us is only to be taken as a grain of salt. We can even

say that what they say should definitely comply with what Allah SWT has

allowed or not allowed. We should always pay very close attention to what

they say is allowed and compare it to what Allah SWT has said. Allah SWT

who created us and He knows us more than we know ourselves as we see in

Quran

﴾١٦﴿ ‫ْﻞ ْاﻟ َﻮ ِرﯾ ِﺪ‬

Halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬Benefits

3.1

Is there any reference to benefits of food or drink in Quran? What is behind

the halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods? What have we come to discover that is in these food

that are our benefits? We know that Allah SWT is most Knowing and Wise so

our reflection and taking in the reasons behind the halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬is necessary

for all Muslims to gain, even though we may not understand all the reasons

we can certainly find enough in reflection and science to prove benefits to

halal. In this section I want to explore ayats in the Quran and some hadith in

order to show the nutrition which is in the halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods and drinks stated

for us by Allah SWT.

3.2 Benefits to Halal (‫)ﺣﻼل‬

In this section I want to discuss the benefits to eating halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬in each ayat

and some hadith.

Halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬food has low incidence rate when it comes to contamination and

food poisoning. Benefits to eating halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬meat are as follows; when the

jugular vein is cut, the blood from the animal is drained out which assist in

taking away all kinds of harmful substances from the meat, animals killed in a

Quran 6:118

9
halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬way has all its organs attached therefore any contanition of

damaged organs upon draining of the blood is not seen in slaughtering a

animal the halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬way. Halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬food and drinks are free from alcohol

and pork, this we will discuss later to what these benefits are from avoiding

them. Eating halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬keeps away the illnesses found in not halal (‫)ﺣﻼل‬

food. A huge benefit to eating halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬is that it is blessed by Allah SWT

and there has even been some studies on water being altered when the

words bismillah is said over it. Eating food that is blessed by Allah SWT is

certainly beneficial for the body and the soul.

3.2 Benefits to Fasting

In Quran it has been clearly stated that we must obey Allah SWT in all

aspects of life, and obeying Him when it comes to consumption of food and

drink is no different. We see in the following ayats those things that have

been deemed halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬and have been prescribed to us by Allah SWT

these things have many benefits but for the sake of this project I will only

refer to the benefits in regards to the humans body and soul

َ ‫ِﯾﻦ ﻣِﻦ َﻗ ْﺒﻠِ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻟَﻌَﻠﱠ ُﻜ ْﻢ َﺗ ﱠﺘ ُﻘ‬

﴾١٨٣﴿ ‫ﻮن‬ َ ‫ِﺐ َﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟﱠﺬ‬ ‫ِﺐ َﻋﻠَ ْﯿ ُﻜ ُﻢ ﱢ‬

َ ‫ﱡﻬﺎ اﻟﱠﺬ‬
َ ‫ِﯾﻦ آ َﻣ ُﻨﻮا ُﻛﺘ‬

10
O you who have faith! Prescribed for you is fasting as it was prescribed for

those who were before you, so that you may be Godwary.5

In the above ayat we can see that Allah has prescribed fasting on believers.

So what is the benefits to fasting one might ask. The Prophet of Islam has

said: “Fast, you’ll be healthy”. And in ‘Life Magazine’ in its September 1996

issue considered fasting: the healing revolution. So why has it been stated in

Quran, hadith and has been recognized as one of the healing remedies for

the body and soul, here are the facts about fasting. It is known and is not

limited to curing many of our modern illnesses, including the following:

allergies, cardiovascular disease, chronic diseases of the digestive system,

degenerative and painfully inflammatory illnesses of the joints, myriad

disturbances in one’s eating behavior, glaucoma, initial malfunction of the

kidneys, tension and migraine headaches, as well as skin diseases,

marvelously decomposes and burns all the cells and tissue that are aged,

damaged, diseased, weakened or dead, a process called in medicine

autolyze or self-digest or detoxification. Dr. Joel Fuhrman in ‘Fasting and

Eating for Health’ notes: “Fasting has been repeatedly observed to alleviate

neuroses, anxiety and depression.”

5
Holy Quran 2:183
11
So now that I went through a list of benefits of fasting to the humans body

what about the soul? I’d lie to share a beautiful hadith here, a man wrote a

letter to Imam Askari (a.s) asking him: “For what reason did Allah make

fasting compulsory?”

The Imam (a.s) wrote in reply: “God has made fasting compulsory so that the

rich shall find the pain of hunger so they have a mercy upon the poor.”6 So

here we can see that one becomes less dependant on the food and instead

starts to reflect on other. The soul will start to care for others over himself

and with reflection will start to rid the ego state one's nafs might have been

in. This usually has the person feeling sad for others and maybe even

remorseful for the wasting they had done. The person fasting will start to give

in charity where they can and start to develop generosity which is a virtue. So

in the end one starts gaining virtues and ridding the vices that was hurting

and darkening one state of their soul and is beautifully stated in Quran “O

you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those

before you that you may gain self-restraint.”7

3.3 Benefits of Meat

I do want to state that I was only able to find benefits mainly on sources that

where for not halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods and drinks, and therefore my benefits may be

limited to this confinement. In sha Allah if one does the research on halal (

‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods (especially that of meat) I am certain there would be much more

benefits found. In sha Allah this would be a good starter for one to continue

in analyzing and comparing halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬to haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬.

َ Anyways next is

benefits of meat.

َ ُ‫ِﻊ َو ِﻣ ْﻨ َﻬﺎ َﺗ ْﺄ ُﻛﻠ‬

He created the cattle, in which there is warmth for you and [other] uses, and

some of them you eat.8

Benefits to eating beef are many I will share some of its benefits in this

project. It has a good source of L-carnitine which helps in hypertension,

8
Holy Quran 16:5

oxidative stress, diabetes, weight loss, nitric oxide, and inflammation. Other

benefits are Anti-aging benefits,

increasing longevity, protects every cell in our body from cellular damage,

which can lead to many chronic diseases, helps repair and make bone, skin,

and cartilage, discourages food cravings, rich in several essential minerals

especially iron (which helps to prevent anemia), phosphorus, selenium, and

zinc, and also has high vitamin B content (which helps with mental mood

disorders). As you see there is many reasons one should not avoid eating

meat in fact from a number of our companions from Ahmad b. Muhammad

from Ibn Abi Nasr from al-Husayn b. Khalid. He said: I said to Abu ‘l-Hasan

(AS): “The people say: Verily whoever abandons eating meat for three days

his nature is worsened. So he said: They have lied, rather (it is that) whoever

does not eat meat for forty days his nature and his body are altered, and that

it is due to the transfer of the nutfa in the measure of forty days.”9

) ‫ ﻗﻠﺖ ﻻﺑﻲ اﻟﺤﺴﻦ‬: ‫ ﻋﻦ اﻟﺤﺴﯿﻦ ﺑﻦ ﺧﺎﻟﺪ ﻗﺎل‬، ‫ ﺑﻦ أﺑﻲ ﻧﺼﺮ‬، ‫ ﻋﻦ أﺣﻤﺪ اﺑﻦ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ‬، ‫وﻋﻦ ﻋﺪة ﻣﻦ أﺻﺤﺎﺑﻨﺎ‬

So with all its benefits and the fact that it has been said in Quran and hadith

one should not avoid eating meat, but we should not eat it in exese which I

will speak about taker in my project.

benefits we have come to know about cattle milk is that is builds healthy

maintains healthy blood pressure, maintains immunes system and converts

food into energy. As you see there are many benefits to drinking milk. It is so

good that there is a hadith that states the Holy Prophet when drinking milk,

would say, “O’ God, grant us abundance in this, and bestow us more from it.”

Abul Hassan Muhammad ibn Ali ibn ash-Shah al-Marv al-Ruzi narrated that

In the above ayat it is speaking about bees and the honey being a cure, so

what are the benefits of honey? Honey health benefits includes controlling

cholesterol level, managing diabetes, treating gastric problems, fighting

promoting restful sleep, fighting asthma, removing dandruff, prevents nausea

from morning sickness, cold and cough, and enhancing skin health. Honey

as you see has many benefits and is a true beauty Glory be to Allah SWT.

the table (and not to wait for other foods). It is nice to note in this section of

bread and their benefits is that today we know that bread is a complete food

for human being as it has got calcium, phosphorus, magnesium,B12 vitamin,

etc. which are mostly saved in wheat bran. When they remove the bran and

give us white flour, nothing remains but carbohydrate which is sugar. Whole

wheat bread cures the constipation while white bread causes constipation.

Whole wheat bread cures the anemia while white bread causes anemia. So

from Islamic perspective we see that bread is respected, and good for us as

well as we should be cautious not to consume the wheat that has been

altered as there would very little benefits remaining after it's processed.

By the fig and the olive,25

The above ayats they have some similarities in their mentioning similar food

and drink that are blessing from Allah SWT, therefore I choose to keep them

together and explain in their health benefits one by one.

The mention of olives in Quran is quite a few times and there are many

reason to why Allah SWT has emphasised a lot upon them, some of their

benefits is that olives are high in vitamin E and another powerful antioxidants,

it is good for the heart also may protect against osteoporosis and cancer,

decreased inflammation, bone, muscle and nerve function.

The second food in this ayat is dates they can benefit us by decreasing

cholesterol, treating constipation, and boosting the energy levels and bone

health. They extremely rich in antioxidants, prevents cell damage and

protects against inflammation, stronger bones and teeth, boosts the immune

system, improves weight, offers added nourishment during fever, and cures

dysentery. Eating dates on an empty stomach is known to kill intestinal

worms. Dates are also well known now to help delivery and labour to a

pregnant woman, it is also stated in Quran dates upon having a child in

Quran.

Shake the trunk of the palm tree, freshly picked dates will drop upon you.26

Dates benefits are also be helping prevent night blindness, preserving

healthy intestinal microbiome, reducing the risk of colon cancer, supporting a

healthy pregnancy, slowing down aging process and boosting sexual desire.

I want to also mention here that the Messenger of Allah would break his fast

with ripe dates before he would pray. If those were not available, he would

eat dried dates. If those were not available, he would drink some water. Why

would he SAWA do this well a date first helps the body start its digestive

process and gives it the energy to deal with the secondary. It is like taking a

daily multivitamin. This daily multivitamin can create a stronger and healthier

body. their benefit is most likely spiritual as well as physical. If their benefit

were purely physical, one could perhaps consume any fruit high in natural

26
Holy Quran 19:25
24
sugars before iftar to gain similar benefits. However, the act of following the

Prophet's (SAW) tradition is one way of connecting and remembering him,

which is spiritually beneficial for Muslims.

Another part to these ayats make mention of fruits in general which many

have different benefits. I will share a couple more with you but is not limited

to this list. Bananas may help prevent asthma, cancer, high blood pressure,

diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and digestive problems and may reduce

the risk of kidney stones.

Avocados benefits of avocado include weight management, protection from

heart diseases and diabetes, treating osteoarthritis, and enhancing the

absorption of nutrients for the body. It also reduces the risk of cancer, liver

damage, and vitamin K deficiency-related bleeding. Avocado helps in

keeping the eyes healthy and protecting the skin from signs of aging and the

harmful effects of UV rays. It also helps in maintaining blood sugar levels and

has antioxidant properties. It even increases circulation, boosts cognitive

abilities, and builds stronger bones.

25
Grapes have many benefits some are that they have been linked to

prevention of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity,

and constipation. They may also protect against cancer, eye problems,

cardiovascular disease, and other health conditions.

Pomegranates have a huge amount of benefits which include being an

antioxidant, a good source of vitamin C, a cancer prevention, helps

Alzheimer's disease, helps the digestion, an anti-inflammatory, helps with

arthritis, heart disease, blood pressure, antiviral, vitamins rich, helps improve

memory helps with fertility, a great source for an energy boost and helps

diabetes. It also may help reduce your risk for chronic disease.

Figs have a number of benefits they are helps with sexual dysfunction, helps

prevent colon cancer, helps relieve constipation, indigestion, piles, diabetes,

helps reduce weight lose, reduces risk of osteoporosis, helps with coughs

and bronchitis and helps asthma. It also protects against breast cancer,

reduces coronary heart disease and is a perfect defense against the effects

of hypertension. They are good for fever, earache, boils, abscesses,

venereal diseases, and are excellent for the liver.

26
Health benefits of drinking water includes preventing osteoporosis, balancing

body temperature, assist with breathing, support metabolism, relieves pain

and support cardiovascular health. Other benefits includes dissolving kidney

stones, preventing arthritis, supporting pregnancy, improving skin condition,

balancing PH levels, promoting digestion and supporting removal of

excretory. When the Holy Prophet (S) drank water he would say:

.‫َﺠ َﻌ ْﻠ ُﻪ أُ َﺟﺎﺟﺎً ﺑِ ُﺬﻧُﻮﺑِﻨَﺎ َو َﺟ َﻌﻠَ ُﻪ َﻋ ْﺬﺑﺎً ُﻓ َﺮاﺗﺎً ﺑِﻨِ ْﻌ َﻤﺘِ ِﻪ‬

“All praise be to Allah, the One who did not make it (this water) bitter as a

punishment for our sins, and made it sweet and quenching by His grace.”27

In al-Makarim: From the Noble Prophet (S) that he used to eat different types

of food ... he used to eat cucumber with fresh dates, and he liked to have

watermelon with grapes, and he would eat watermelon with sweet melon and

sometimes with sugar. Sometimes he ate watermelon with dates and when

he was fasting, he would open his fast with fresh dates when they were in

season.

In a hadith about the Holy Prophet SAWA is is narrated “Sometimes he ate

grapes one by one, and he used to eat cheese, he would eat dates and drink

water; and dates with water was what he ate most of the time. He used to

27
al-Wasa`il 17:204

have milk, dates and ‘al-Harisah’ (a dish made from mixing bulgur with meat).

The food he liked the most was meat. He liked pumpkin and squash and

would pick this from the large bowl (of fruit). He used to eat (the meat of) the

fowl, the meat of wild (herbivorous) animals and birds, bread, clarified butter,

vinegar, endive, ‘al-Badhruj’ (a herb like the sweet basil) and cabbage.”28

referenced to all the Ibrahim faiths; indeed, its scientific name, Zizphus Spina

Christi, is a reference to the belief among some Christians that its thorns

were used to crown Jesus before his crucifixion. However that is not our

discussion in this project but I thought it was interesting neither the less. It’s

benefits are disinfecting wounds, healing skin diseases and as an

anti-inflammatory. It also is known to cure chest pain, constipation, eye

antibacterial, antifungal, anti inflammatory, antiseptic, blood purifier,

antioxidant, anticonvulsant, antiviral, antinociceptive (helps reducing

sensitivity to painful stimuli), diuretic ( increases the flow of urine the rate of

urine and helps to remove the excess of water salt and toxins from the body

and as effective for kidney), antidiarrheal and a febrifuge (reduce fevers).

The harmful effect of someone eating swine is great, and many illnesses

stem from eating it. I will attempt to discuss one of the illnesses that come

from eating swine. Trichinosis it is a common disease caused due to a small

hair-like worm, which itself is a type of earthworm. This worm lives in pigs.

When a person eats meat that is not cooked properly he gets infected by this

disease. In an article from an American research center states: ‘twenty

millions of people are ingesting these worms into their body. Only one group

from them has been diagnosed, but there are thousands of incidences, which

are not known to the doctors. It is expected that more than twenty millions of

people are infected with this disease and 16,000 have publicly announced

their illness, from which 5% have died due to the severity.’

Benefits to eating halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬forbidden meat which has been offered to other

contains 0.24mg-1.25mg. So close to the same amount however the grapes

ingredients as wine does. To make it more interesting is that one can take

Etiquettes of Eating in Islam

5.1

Etiquettes of eating and there reasons for it on a nutrition and health

reasons.

In al-Ja’fariyat: In his narration from Ja’far ibn Muhammad from his fathers

from ‘Ali (as) who said: I saw the Noble Prophet (S) more than once - when

he drank (water), he would have three draughts and with each draught, he

33
would begin in the name of Allah and glorify Him when he finished, so I

asked him about this and he said: “Thanking Allah is done by glorifying Him

and beginning in His name is a protection from ailments.”34

Narrated from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman from Abi ‘Abdillah from his father (as)

who said: The Noble Prophet (S) used to lick his fingers after he ate.35

Narrated from Wahab ibn ‘Abd al-Rabbih who said: I saw Aba ‘Abdillah (as)

picking his teeth and I watched him, so he said: The Holy Prophet (S) used to

pick his teeth; and it gives the mouth a good odor.36 Prophet Muhummad (S)

would not breathe in the cup when he drank, and if he wanted to breathe, he

would move the cup away from himself and then breathe.37

The Prophet ate with three fingers: the thumb and the two adjacent fingers

(the index and middle fingers), and sometimes he ate with four fingers, and

[sometimes] with his whole hand. He did not eat with two fingers and would

say: ‘Eating with two fingers is [like] the way Satan eats.”38

O Children of Adam! Put on your adornment on every occasion of prayer,

and eat and drink, but do not waste; indeed, He does not like the wasteful.41

The Prophet did not eat except when he felt hungry and when his body

required nutrition, as he said, “Eat when you have an appetite for eating, and

stop eating while you [still] have an appetite for it.”42

The Prophet has also stated, “Eat dinner even if it is only a handful of low

quality dates, because abandoning eating dinner brings about old age.”43

“When a food possesses four qualities it becomes perfect: being halal, eating

The Prophet drank water it was by sipping it; he said, “Drink water by sipping

and do not drink it all at once, because it causes pain in the liver.”45

In the introduction of Tibb al-Nabi: In a hadith, he (S) said: We are a

community that does not eat until we become hungry, and when we eat, we

do not satiate ourselves.46

In al-Mahasin: From some of our companions from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali (as)

who said: There are twelve qualities that one must learn to adopt while

eating. Four of them are obligatory, four are (from the) sunnah and four are

(basic eating) etiquette, as for the sunnah, it includes sitting on the left leg,

eating with three fingers, and for one to eat from what is in front of him.47 In

al-Mustadrak: From Abi al-Qasim al-Kufi in a hadith on the actions that are

(from the) sunnah while eating: The sunnah in this is to wash one’s hands

before and after eating.48

Chapter 6

Islamic Medicine

Some medicine from Imam Reza (AS) I will mention from his book ‘The

Golden Medical Dissertation’.

One must take ten rotls of clean raisins; he must wash them and soak them

in abundant, clear water to an increase of four fingers over it and leaves it in

its container; that is for three (days) in winter, a day and a night in summer;

and then he must put them into a clean container; the water must be that of

the heaven (i.e. rain) if he is able (to get) it; otherwise, it must be of

freshwater whose fountain is in the east direction; shining water as well as it

is light, which becomes hot and cold quickly; and this is a proof of clear

water. He must cook the raisins until they become swollen and ripe; and then

he must squeeze them, clarify their water, and leaves it to be cold. Then he

must return it to the container again, measure it with a stick, and leave it to

boil on a calm fire until two-thirds of it has steamed. Then he must take one

40
rotl of purified bee honey and pour it into it, and it replaces the amount of the

water which was in the cooking-pot; and then he must leave it to boil until the

amount of honey has evaporated, and it comes down to its limit. Then he

must take a thin piece of cloth and put on it a dirham of ginger, half a dirham

of carnation, half a dirham of cinnamon, a dirham of saffron, half a dirham of

spikenard, half a dirham of endive, and half a dirham of mastic. He must

grind each one of them separately and put them on the piece of cloth and tie

it well with a thread. Then he must put it into (the liquid). The piece of cloth

must be macerated in the drink to the extent that the strength of the drugs

wherein comes down (into the drink). He must go on stirring the drink gently

on a calm fire until the amount of honey has steamed. Then he must lift the

cooking-pot, leave it to be cold, and leave it for three months, that its tastes

may overlap with each other; and then he can use it. He can drink of it one or

two okes of pure water. So if you, O Commander of the faithful, eat the

amount of food which I have described to you, then drink of this drink an

amount of three glasses after your food. If you do that, you will be safe

throughout your day and night from cold, chronic aches such as gout, wind,

and others from among the aches of nerves, brain, stomach, and some

aches of liver, spleen, intestines, and bowels. If you, after that, feel appetite

41
for water, then you must drink of it the half of what you had drunk, for it puts

right, regulates, and keeps the body of the Commander of the faithful.

Raisins contain a large amount of iron; they are useful for generating blood

red cells and treating the disease of anemia; and they are the best of all

drugs in treating many disease states such as indigestion, gastritis, gasses in

stomach and intestines, some of liver diseases, dullness of intestines, and

constipation.

Another remedy from our imam Reza (AS) is that one who wants to get rid of

cold throughout the days of winter must eat every day three mouthfuls of

honey.

He who fears migraine and colic must not delay eating fresh fish in summer

or winter; and he who wants to be good with light body and flesh must

decrease his supper by night.

He who does not want his tonsils and epiglottis to inflame must not eat candy

unless he gargles with vinegar after it.

42
He who does not want his body to be infected by winds must eat garlic once

every seven days; and he who does not want his teeth to be decayed must

not eat sweets except after a small piece of bread.

Chapter 7

Conclusion

In conclusion to this project we can see that just a little reflection on Quran

and a search for beautiful hadiths we can see Islam certainly had natural

medicine and a much healthier lifestyle in its forms of what to eat and how to

eat. There is much emphasis on the fact of not overeating and to keep halal (

‫ )ﺣﻼل‬and refrain from haram (‫)ﺣ َﺮام‬.

َ We see that today's way of losing weight

or getting healthier there are many diets, diets that oppose the way Islam

teaches us to eat. Today’s diets you will see have excessive vitamin been

taken and high protein diets this will over time hurt ones body. We can

conclude that by far Islam has come to give the right remedies to keep

healthy and if one follows the sunnah they will certainly be healthy. We also

conclude that Islam has not just a way of eating it its medicine but a very

important part to Islamic medicine is ones soul. One's soul is affected by

what we eat and how much we do consume. The true cures in Islamic

43
Medicine are healthy foods, halal (‫ )ﺣﻼل‬foods, following correct eating habits,

following spiritual rituals etc. And to finish off I want to say that we have been

able to see the amount of benefits in these types of foods and drinks that

have been mentioned in Quran and hadith, we should know that this is only a

brief look into their benefits and that there is much more out there to be

discovered in what nutricion it holds and how it can help us in certain

illnesses.

In sha Allah you enjoyed this writing may Allah help to protect all of us and

keep us all healthy, Ameen.
