DIODES WITH RC AND RL

LOADS
Diode with RC Load

 Can you find the loop voltage equation?

The wheel that is free?

FREEWHEELING DIODES
Freewheeling Diode
 The diode 𝑫𝒎 is used to provide an alternate
path to the current flowing back from the
induction (discharge).
Freewheeling Diode
But why?

RECOVERY OF TRAPPED
ENERGY
Trapped Energy Recovery

 Why do we need to recover the trapped energy?

 Any application?
Regenerative Braking

 Energy recovered during braking

Recovery of Trapped Energy
Return Stored Energy to the Source
 Add a second winding and a diode

 The inductor and feedback winding look like a

transformer
Equivalent Circuit
AC to DC

DIODE RECTIFIERS
Rectifiers
 A rectifier is a device that converts the
periodically changing alternating current (AC)
into direct current (DC).
Diode Rectifiers
 A rectifier converts ac to dc
 The purpose of a rectifier may be to produce an
output that is
 purely dc
 a voltage or current waveform that has a specified dc
component.
Half Wave Rectifier
 the objective is to create a load voltage that has a
nonzero dc component
 The diode is a basic electronic switch that allows
current in one direction only
Average Value

Note that the units on the horizontal axis are in terms of angle (wt). This
representation is useful because the values are independent of frequency.
