MIXER PERFORMANCE
MIXER PERFORMANCE
To gain the maximum performance potential from the mixing plant it is important to understand the
factors affecting the functioning of the mixer itself and to appreciate how different materials can affect
its performance.
The mixer is intended to handle tailings, sand or any other fine grade material. The paste blade type
arrangement of the mixer is not designed to process aggregate or lumpy material.
These mixers are continuous mixers, therefore they will only intermix and blend ingredients
concurrently fed into them. Consequently, any variation of ingredient feeds will produce a similar
variation in the mixture.
The measuring and feeding systems should be carefully designed and positioned to introduce all
components at the commencement of the mixing zone. Since the components (base material, cement
or other additives, and water) are introduced together, they are afforded the maximum opportunity for
intermixing during their passage through the mixer.
The continuous mixer, however, cannot re-introduce components which are not fed into it, nor can it
equalize a material feed which is erratic in its grading. Materials fed into the mixer non-uniformly will
leave it in substantially the same state.
If the mixer speed is allowed to drop significantly, due to overloading of the mixer, the power
consumption will also increase dramatically.
Both mixer rotor shafts are particularly timed by two very large spur gears at the input end to provide a
correct blade sequence.
The mixer utilises a retractable weir that can be hydraulically retracted to empty the mixer and for
cleaning purposes.
Over-sized or lumpy material should be separated and screen before entering the mixer. The mixer is
not designed to be a crusher and cannot completely crush lumpy material, although some shredding
of lumpy material can occur. Lumpy, inconsistent material feed may cause problems with mix quality
and result in an inferior final product.
Large objects must not be allowed to enter the mixing chamber. Normally mixing arms will break away
from the shaft before damage to the drive can occur.
FEEDER REQUIREMENTS
FEEDER REQUIREMENTS
Though most operators determine their desired feed rate against job requirements, there are many
other variables often not fully considered. Notwithstanding this, it is important that the mixing chamber
be kept full to effect a good homogeneous mix.
Aran mixers must have materials introduced at such a rate so as to maintain a full mixing chamber. If
insufficient materials are introduced, that is, if the feeder output rates are too low, the mixing action will
not be complete and poor results may occur.
It is recommended to run the plant at higher output rates for shorter periods than to run the plant at a
slower rate where insufficient mixing may result. As a general rule the plant should be run at or above
75% of the plant’s rated capacity. If the plastic index (p.i.) of the material is high then run the plant at
the maximum speed that can be comfortably produced by the plant.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
The ARAN Mixer is very robust and designed to work hard for extended periods. The mixer does
however require regular maintenance to retain this ability.
The following maintenance recommendations are based on a 40 hour week, operating under normal
conditions.
Check the paddle faces for wear. Do not allow the paddles to wear far enough that they do
not effectively wipe the case anymore. If the paddles are allowed to wear excessively then the
sweep radius of the mixer is reduced, increasing the horsepower requirements. It is not
uncommon to have increased wear on the paddles at the entry point of the mixer.
Check the condition of the rubber seals. These rubber seals can be easily replaced for wear.
Check the condition of the front and rear bearings. A visual inspection should be made to
ensure there is no damage to the bearing or housing.
Check the condition of the skirt rubbers at the discharge end.
Check oil levels and bearing lubrication. Refer to the Lubrication chart for oil and greasing.
Check the condition of the mixer poly end wall and roof liners.
Note: After the first four hours of operating the mixer, isolate the drive motors, then check and tighten
the paddle faces.
WARNING: Do not do any inspection or maintenance on the mixer unless the mixer drive motor has
been isolated and tagged.

MIXER CLEANING
MIXER CLEANING
The cleaning of the mixer both internally and externally is extremely important to the successful
operation of the plant. Cleaning of the mixer should be carried out on a daily basis or more regularly if
required to ensure the best performance from the mixer.
External Cleaning:
Using a high pressure washer, the outside of the mixer should be thoroughly cleaned. Particular
attention should be made to the "air gap" between the end of the mixer case and the gearbox. A build
up of material in this area could cause premature wearing to the seals and bearings.
Internal Cleaning:
Regular cleaning of the inside of the mixer is extremely important for preventing excessive paddle face
wear and increased motor load. The internal areas of the mixer mainly comprise of rubber and poly,
assisting in the easy removal of build up material.
Use the cleanout conveyor to break away the lining on the inside of the mixer and to discharge the
majority of the left over material. The mixer weir should be retracted before using the cleanout
conveyor.
When cleaning the mixer, it is necessary to remove all build up on the wear faces and the shaft using
a flat edge scraper. It may also be necessary to rotate the shafts to clear away the build up.
The side walls of the mixer should be cleaned using a scraper. The material on the bottom of the
mixer should be broken up as much as possible. A high pressure blaster should be used to remove all
left over material and to clean hard to remove left over material.
SAFETY
SAFETY
Particular attention should be made to the safety aspects of mixers. If used incorrectly, these mixers
can be extremely dangerous.
Before accessing the mixer, isolate and lock out the mixer drive isolation switch.
The mixer is accessed for cleaning and maintenance through the opening side walls or doors. These
doors are constructed from heavy rubber conveyor belting and mounted to articulating frames. They
are opened and closed by hydraulic cylinders. Keep well clear of opening and closing mixer doors. A
hand or arm carelessly placed when opening or closing a mixer door could be easily injured. Each
door is operated from a valve lever on the side to be opened or closed. It is in line of sight of the full
length of the door.
Some cleaning and maintenance activities require personnel to enter the mixer. These include
removal of hardened cement from the cement entry zone at the head of the transfer conveyor,
removal of hardened cement from the polyethylene mixer roof, replacement of wear faces,
replacement of broken mixer arms, or replacement of mixer lining sheets.
When a person enters the mixer an increased number of hazards are present. Each of the following
must be removed by isolation.
Mixer Drives.
Mixer Doors.
Mixer Clean Out Conveyor Belt.
Incoming material streams.
Water pumps.
WARNING: Always make sure that someone who knows that you are in the mixer is nearby and will
watch for any potential hazard.
WARNING: Aran mixers incorporate measures to reduce noise from emitting sources as much as is
practical. When working around an operating mixer it may be necessary to wear hearing
protection.
WARNING: All electrical equipment must be assumed to be live and therefore dangerous if contact
is made with terminals or bare electrical conductors. Only qualified and licensed
electricians are to carry out work on mains voltage electrical equipment.
WARNING: Isolate and tag out all equipment before commencing work. Check that the isolation is
effective.
WARNING: Never work with electrical equipment while standing in water. Do not at any time spray
electrical equipment with water or liquids
