- The proposal, in line with requirements, includes post-cleaning layup if piping internals by
imposing low-pressure of N2 in the cleaned piping in order to keep oxygen out. The proposed
passivation step will allow for the setup of the N2 preservation without allowing the cleaned
surfaces to rust, as long as the N2 setup phase is not too extended. A 2-hour period will suffice.

- Draining of solutions can be achieved by:

Gravity
Pumping (e.g. by attaching pumps to low-point drains)
Imposition of pressure using a gas, e.g. oil-free air at 0.5 to 1 bar.

- All solutions and rinse water derived from the chemical cleaning activities are regarded as
scheduled waste and must be treated accordingly within the law.(SW304/305)

- Exact configuration of piping into manageable loops for soaking is to be determined upon award
of work, as part of the method statement. This proposed method of execution and procedure is a
summary of the main components of the future method statement, to be prepared upon award of
work.

5. Summary of the procedural steps needed to achieve the desired surface condition:

-Pre-wash or water circulation for stainless steel pipes i.e 5000psi. The objective is to remove
particulate non-adherent solid debris. End point to be determined by inspection of bag filters.
Mesh-size to be determined at appropriate time. By pump recirculation of solutions through the
Is the water soluble piping, divided into suitable spools, a neutral degreasing will be done. The degreaser will be a
solvent refering to dilute solution of water-soluble solvents and effective surfactants in water. The solution
NaOH or Glycol temperature will be 40 to 45 degrees C, and the degreasing duration will be 2 hours continuous
Ether ??? circulation. Following this phase, the solution will be drained for related piping spools at
concentration of 50%

- In soaking procedure, where the degreasing solution is drained off to IBC tanks provided, there
will be a single rinsing phase using the fresh water at ambient temperature. Rinse water will be re-
circulated for 30 minutes then drained to the waste receiving point, already prepared. The system
will be refilled with water and heated to about 40-50˚C while soaking. This water will be used for
the Nitric acid-pickling phase. Once the desired temperature has been achieved, the following
chemicals will be added to formulate the pickling solution:

Initial dosing of nitric acid to produce a 55% nitric acid solution.

Addition of the suitable corrosion inhibitor Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) at a suitable concentration
(e.g10% for NaNO₃)

Further addition of nitric acid to achieve a solution of 55% nitric acid.

- Continued soaking for a minimum of 5 hours while maintaining temperature of at least 40˚C, and
until it is indicated by analysis of samples, that the pickling reaction has terminated.

Solution will be drained to waste and the spools rinsed once with ambient water. Rinse water will
be drained.

- The rinsed piping will spontaneously flash-rust. The final, 3-step passivation phase, will remove
this rust, prepare the pH of the solution to accept an oxidising agent, then impose an extremely
thin (invisible) layer of γ hematite (Fe2O3) that temporarily passivates the steel surface. Under the
conditions proposed, the γ hematite will not allow ions to pass through, effectively stopping
further corrosion (rusting).

- The bath tank will be filled with water and heated to 40-45C while soaking process. Nitric acid
will be added to create a 55% solution. Circulation will continue for at least 2 - 3 hours and
samples will be analysed.

- Sodium nitrite, an oxidising agent, will be added such that the quantity added is calculated to yield
a 10% solution of sodium nitrite. Circulation will continue for at least 2 hours and samples will be
analysed.

- The solution will be fully drained to waste, and kept separate from any acidic waste already
accumulated.

- The drained piping will be blown dry using dryer until dew-point measurements (0.01) indicate
that the exiting air has achieved an acceptable degree of dryness,

- Cleaned and dried piping will be inspected and sealed with proper packaging. The piping will at
this point be handed over to the client indicating completion of that part of the work.

6. Stainless steel piping, the requirement includes external chemical pickling of weld seams to restore the
stainless characteristics. In addition there are several stainless alloys involved (A316L, Duplex, Super
duplex and SMO) as well as titanium.

7. Parameters monitored during the various phases:

- Degreasing – temperature and duration

- Acid pickling – temperature, duration, presence of free acid and total dissolved iron
- Passivation – step 1 - temperature, duration, presence of free acid and total dissolved iron
- Drying – dew point

8. Overall chemical quantities:

Given the inclusion of temporary piping and tanks, as well as the later determination of the division of
the piping , it is not possible to give an exact figure of total requirements. This proposal is based on an
estimated spools length ( 20 meters ) and total single fill volume covering the entire scope of 0.353m3.
Chemical requirement will be as follows :

Phase Chemical Concentration % Volume used

Degreasing using
NaOH or Glycol Degreasing Water-soluble solvent (e.g. glycol 55% 500ml
Ether ??? ether)

NaNO3 at 2% or Pickling Corrosion inhibitor (NaNO₃) 25% 300ml

10% or 25% for
Pickling ?? Pickling HNO3 (Nitric acid) 55% 400 ml

Passivation Sodium nitrite 10% 250ml

HNO3 is/isn't
used for Spill counter Sodas 500 kg
Passivation?? measure for acid

9. Key personnel:
All key personnel will be experienced in similar work and will possess the required knowledge of the
chemicals used, chemical safety, and storage and so on. An example CV is attached.

10. Mechanical work:

With the exception of the removal of piping from equipment to which it is attached, the provision and
fitting of temporary connection spools will be in the scope of the subcontractor.

11. Waste disposal.

Estimate total quantity of waste is 500 litres. Used passivation solution is to be kept separate from
used pickling solution at all times.

12. Spillage plan:
