Detailed Lesson Plan in Earth Science 7

(Characteristics of Star)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. know the different characteristics of stars;
2. know what did the star is made up of;and
3. Explain why do stars twinkle.
II. Learning Objective
A. Subject Matter; Characteristics of Stars
1. Concept
a. Stars vary in color, size and brightness.
b. Stars maybe blue, white, yellow, red and black in color.
c. In size, some stars are bigger or smaller than others.
d. Not all the stars that appear at night shine with the same brightness.
2. Process or Skills Observing, Communicating and Classifying
3. Values Integration: Cooperation

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
Good morning class! Good Morning Sir and Mabuhay!
Anyone who is absent? None, Sir.
(check the attendance)

B. Motivation
Class do you want to play a Yes,Sir.
game?
Good, now I will group you Group 1 – Orion
into three. Each group will Group 2 – Perseus
select a leader and a secretary. Group 3 – Cassiopeia

(Grouping the class)

Yes Sir!
Have you selected your leader
and your secretary?
Yes Sir!
Just a reminder, when we’re
having a group activity, discuss
with your groupmates silently.
Avoid disturbing other groups.
Do you understand?

I have a puzzle here, what you

are going to do is to arrange the
puzzle and form a figure.
(the leaders will come forward)
I will give you 2 minutes to
form the puzzle. (the students will now assemble the
puzzle)
Leaders please come forward.

Your time starts now! G! double O! D! J! O! B! Good Job!

Good Job! Hey! 123 Stamp.

Wow, very good class. Let’s do “A star, Sir”

the good job clap.
A star can be seen at night.
So class, what figure did you
form? A star is a huge ball made up of
hydrogen and helium
From what you have formed, do
you know what is a star? Yes, Sir.

That’s right! Aside from that.

The sun is the nearest star in our

sun to be a star?
The sun gives off light in our planet.
Why do you think so?

Any other answer?

C. Presentation The stars can form differet structures.
.

How familiar is the star to you, Yes, Sir!

Mayrose?

Nice idea. But now we are

going to explore the stars in the
galaxy. We will get to kow A responsible student wants to learn,

is its color. What do you think
are the different colors of the
star? Can you give mnemonics
on the different colors of the
stars?
(if nobody can do it, share)

What do you think is the reason

why the stars have different
colors?
No, Sir.
Precisely! The color of the stars
relates to its temperature. The Yes, Sir.

coolest stars.

Next characteristic of star is the

brightness.

Do all stars shine the same?

Have you seen lines of lamp

post in your barangay or street?

O let’s assume that the lamp

posts in tha street are the stars. No, Sir. Stars have different size.
What do you observe on the There are are big and smaller ones.
lamp posts that are near you?

How about the lamp posts that I think it has shorter life. Big stars
are very far? consume their energy more because of
their size.
Precisely. There are two factors
that determine the brightness of
the star.
a. Luminousity – measures the
energy it gives off per unit
in time
b. Distance – measures how Yes, because our sun is a star, so the
far the star is located from stars that is far away from us can be
us called distant suns.
The next characteristics of stars is Size

Do all stars have the same sizes? The reason is that the light of the sun
outshines the brightness or the light of
the stars. No, Sir.
Very good the stars have different
sizes. What happened if the star is
bigger? Does it have shorter or longer
life? Because the atmosphere is moving so
the light refracts from it causing the

stars. The size affects the brightness of
the stars. If the star is too big, it
consumes lot of energy. The bigger the
star is, the shorter the lifespan is.

The stars can also be called distant

stars. Why?

That’s it another question, why do you Stars are huge of fire made up of

daytime?. Do stars only show at night?
These are color, brightness and size.

Very good. Why do you think the stars

twinkle? What about our atmosphere?
What’s the relation of the atmosphere Thank you, Sir.
in the twinkling of the stars?

Exactly. Stars twinkle when we see

them from the earth’s surface because
we are reviewing them through thick
layers of turbulent air in the earth’s
atmosphere. But the light of the stars
reach our planet in straight pattern. The
twinkling of the stars is called stellar
scintillation.
F. Valuing
So, what can you say about
stars? What is a star?

What are the main

characteristics of a star?

Very good.

That's all for today class.

Thank you and God bless us all.
