Q1 What is sustainable development?

1. Maintaining a delicate balance between the human need to improve
lifestyles and feeling of well-being on one hand, and preserving natural
resources and ecosystems, on which we and future generations depend

Q2 Briefly explain concept of sustainability development.

1. Economic sustainability, various strategies that make it possible to use available
resources to their best advantage.
2. Environmental sustainability, reducing the amount of waste produce or using less energy,
but is concerned with developing processes that will lead to businesses becoming
completely sustainable in the future.
3. Social sustainability, encompass human rights, labor rights and corporate governance

Q3 What is principle of sustainable development

1. Living within environmental limit
2. Achieving a sustainable economy
3. Promoting good governance
4. Using sound science responsibly
5. Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society

Q4 What is sustainable construction?

1. According to Kibert, sustainable construction means creating a healthy built environment
using resource efficient, ecologically-based principles

1
Q5 List the activities before, during and after construction that must be change to sustainable
construction.

Before Construction During Construction After Construction

1. Utilization or earth 1. Clearing of forest, Contributing to:
resources for the and land for 1. High energy usage
production of development. 2. High CO2 Emissions
construction 2. Environmental 3. Large water usage
materials (e.g. pollution (air, water, land) 4. Large Solid Wastes
fossil, wood, 3. High Solid waste generation
cement, hydrogen, generation
air, water, ore etc.)
2. Transportation
to/from factory
involving fuel
consumption and
causing pollution
and greenhouse
emissions.

Q6 Sketch diagram represent of unsustainable construction vs sustainable construction

2
Q7 Compare the principle of sustainable development vs sustainable construction

The Principle of sustainable development Sustainable Construction

Putting people at the centre Show concern for people by ensuring they
live in a healthy, safe and productive built
environment and in harmony with nature
Taking a long term perspective Safeguarding the interests of future
generations while at the same time, meeting
today’s needs
Taking account of costs and benefits Evaluate the benefits and costs of the project
to society and environment
Creating an open and supportive economic Creating a system which can flourish trades,
system improve collaboration and resource
efficiency
Combating poverty and social exclusion Improving the quality of buildings and
services, create jobs opportunities and
promote social cohesiveness
Respecting environmental limits Minimising damage to the environment and
its resources
The precautionary principle Assessing risk and uncertainties before any
action and rectify possible damage at source
Using scientific knowledge Using technology and expert knowledge to
seek information and in improving project
efficiency and effectiveness
Transparency, information participation and Opportunities to improve access to
access to justice information and encourage ethics and
professionalism
Making the polluter pay Legislation compliance and responsibility

Q8 What is concept of sustainability in construction

1. The concept of sustainability must be applied into construction industry to influence the
manner in which a project shall be conducted to strike a balance between conserving the
environment and maintaining prosperity in development.
2. The concept of sustainable construction governs three main pillars:
• environmental protection,

3
• social well-being and
• economic prosperity

Q9 List of sustainable construction strategies

1. Procument
2. Site/ Environment
3. Material Selection
4. Waste Prevention
5. Recycling
6. Energy
7. Building and Material Reuse
8. Health and Safety
9. Indoor Environment Quality

Q10 Benefit of sustainable construction

1. The concept of green building costs lower than conventional method and saves energy.
2. Sustainable buildings will contribute positively to better quality of life, work efficiency
and healthy work environment.
3. Sustainable construction will enable the construction players to be more responsible to
the environmental protection needs without neglecting the social and economic needs in
striving for better living.

Q11 List example of building in Malaysia using sustainable approach

1. Tanarimba at Janda Baik, Pahang.
2. Menara Mesiniaga, Subang Jaya
3. ZEO (Zero Energy Office), Bangi
4. GreenEO & LEO, Putrajaya

Q12 List & explain of possible strategies in sustainable construction

1. Procurement: Specific procurement strategies to ensure sustainable construction
requirements are addressed.
2. Site / Environment: Methods to reduce the environmental impact of construction on the
project site and surrounding environment are identified.
3. Material Selection: Identifies environmentally friendly building materials as well as
harmful and toxic materials that should be avoided.

4
4. Waste Prevention: Methods to reduce and eliminate waste on construction projects are
identified.
5. Recycling: Identifies materials to recycle at each phase of construction and methods to
support the onsite recycling effort.
6. Energy: Methods to ensure and improve the building’s energy performance, reduce
energy consumed during construction, and identify opportunities to use renewable
energy sources.
7. Building and Material Reuse: Identifies reusable materials and methods to facilitate the
future reuse of a facility, systems, equipment, products and materials.
8. Health and Safety: Methods to improve the quality of life for construction workers are
identified.
9. Indoor Environment Quality: Methods to ensure indoor environmental quality measures
during construction are managed and executed properly.

Q13 Briefly explain

a. Constructability
- The capability of a design to be constructed.
- One of a project management technique for reviewing contruction process from
start to finish during the design/ pre-construction phase
b. Value Management
- The systematic and innovtive methodology with a multi-disciplinary approch
targeted to achive better value of construction product through decision making
process.
c. Lean Constuction
- Construction project based on a cyclic processes. Therefore, the need to identify the
wasteful activities i the processes and tp make special consideration for them is
crucial. Then, compress the cycle time by eleminating non-value-adding time
d. BIM
- A process involving the generation and management of digital representtions of
physical and functional characteristics of places.

Q14 Explain the green building rating tools available in Malaysia
a. Green Building Index (GBI)
- An environmental rating system or buildings developed by PAM (Pertubuhan Arkitek
Malaysia) and ACEM (The Association of Consulting Engineering Malaysia)
b. MyCrest
- The Malaysia Carbon Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Tool, aims to
guide, assist, quantify, and hence reduce, the built environment’s impact in terms
of reduced carbon emissions and environmental impact, while taking into account a
more holistic life cycle view of the built environment.
c. Green RE
- GreenRE is a leading Malaysian green rating tool spearheading the drive for a new
level of sustainability and performance in the construction sector. Through the
implementation of our standards, the built environment will consist of structures
that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient. We find it is important
to go green which reduces pollution and degradation of environment, and protects
occupant health.
d. Green Pass
- Green PASS is an assessment tool that able measure and rate the building
performance - Green PASS estimate the carbon emission from building construction
works and building operations
e. Penarafan Hijau by Public Work Department (PWD)
- The organization responsible for VE application in public project development. In
relation to sustainability, PWD has developed a sustainable rating tool known as
Penarafan Hijau JKR (pH JKR) as a mean to determine the sustainability level of
projects
