PRELIMINARY INFORMATION

2.1 SUMMARY

This practical report was one of the education syllabuses for UiTM degree student,
handled by Faculty of Civil Engineering, for EC 221 students, UiTM Pulau Pinang. Student
was handled the practical session period for two month and two weeks, starting from 9 th July
2012 until 16th September 2012. During the practical session, all information and data that

student gathered from practical site will be wrote down in and submitted to lecturer for
evaluation. With this exposure, it will enlarge student information, make student more
confidence, able to make decision, and preparing student to have a good criteria when there
are entering one of the most challenging job filed in Malaysia and over the world.

Fundamentally, construction is one of the most important industries in Malaysia as a

developing country. The construction industry consists of commercial, housing, and also
infrastructural development. The construction industry has proven to be one of the most important
contributors in the development of the country when The Ninth Malaysian Plan emphasizes the
importance of improving the infrastructures, utilities and urban transports which are very close related
with construction and engineering industry in Malaysia.

In order to improve and strengthen the construction industry in Malaysia, it is very important
to ensure that the people of industry really understand their jobs besides having strong fundamentals of
civil engineering and construction. Thus, the students of civil engineering should well understand the
theory of civil engineering besides being exposed to the real world of engineering working
environment. Here comes the idea of how important the practical training to the students of civil
engineering.

8
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT

TECHNICAL REPORT

3.1 NATURE OF WORK

Basically, the project that I was involved is build school of Maahad Tahfiz Sains dan
Teknologi. At the beginning of practice, I was placed under the site engineering work. At
there, I was put under the observation of the site engineer, En. Azhar Burahan. He also
introduced me the types of construction work had used in the project.

There are six zones of the workplace that have been classified by the contractor:
a) Zone A (Masjid includes capacity of 1000 jemaah)
b) Zone B (Asrama lelaki)
c) Zone C (Blok Akademik)
d) Zone D (Kantin and Dewan Serbaguna)
e) Zone E (Dewan Makan)
f) Zone F (Rumah Pencawang TNB)

As a trainee site engineer, most of the work given by my supervisor is to follow him in
doing engineering work such as site observation of construction work, (install and construct,
supervise work), updating the data of the construction plan, make the testing of construction
materials (concrete testing-slump, temperature test and cube test), making explanation of
works at site to government officials, as building owners and others.

3.1.1 Injection piling method

For this project, the contractor has been using the injection method of piling. High
capacity hydraulic injection (or jack-in) piling with capacity of 6000kN is able to install
piles of design load up to 2500kN when ground condition permits. It is a reliable
alternative to conventional pile driving and bored piles with same range of pile capacity.

Because every pile is jacked to sustain a force of up to two design loads or higher, the pile
capacity is verified in a manner similar to a static load test on the pile. Since load tests can
only be conducted on limited number of piles, jack-in piling offers a pile capacity
verification process far more reliable than bored piles and conventional pile driving.

With proper design considerations and the help of boreholes, uncertainties encountered by
jack-in piling in limestone can be minimised. Premature pile termination due to obstacles can
be minimised by applying higher jack-in force. The differential settlement between adjacent
columns has to be assessed should there be a concern of piles of one column terminating
above the actual bearing stratum or limestone.

3.1.2 Reinforce Concrete Structure construction

Reinforced concrete is concrete in which reinforcing bars or other types of

reinforcement have been integrated to improve one or more properties of the concrete. For
many years, it has been utilized as an economical construction material in one form or another
in buildings, bridges, and many other types of structures throughout the world. A large part of
its worldwide appeal is that the basic constituent materials (cement, sand, aggregate, water,
and reinforcing bars) are widely available and that it is possible to construct a structure using
local sources of labor and materials.

Reinforced concrete has been universally accepted because it can be molded essentially into
any shape or form, is inherently rigid, and is inherently fire-resistant. With proper protection

of the reinforcement, a reinforced concrete structure can be very durable and can have a long
life even under harsh climatic or environmental conditions.

Advantages of reinforce concrete structure:

1. It has a relatively high compressive strength;

2. It has better resistance to fire than steel
3. It has long life service with low maintenance cost
4. In some type of structure, such as dams, piers, and footing, it is the most economical
structural material
5. It can be cast to take the shape required, making it widely used in precast structural
components. It yields rigid members with minimum apparent deflection.

Disadvantages of reinforce concrete structure:

1. It has a low tensile strength of about one-tenth of its compressive strength.

2. It needs mixing, casting, and curing, all of which affect the final strength of concrete
3. The cost of the forms usedto cast of concrete placed in the forms
4. It has low compressive strength as compared to steel (the ratio is about 1:10 depending
on materials), which leads to large sections in columns of multistory buildings
5. Cracks develop in concrete due to shrinkage and the application of live loads.

3.1.3 Drainage system

A culvert is a device used to channel water. It may be used to allow water to pass
underneath a road, railway, or embankment. Culverts can be made of many different
materials; steel, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and concrete are the most common. Formerly,
construction of stone culverts was common. In this project, contractor is choosing to use box
culvert, Pipe culvert, Perforate Sub-Soil Pipe, and HRGW (Half Round Glaze Ware) for
drainage system.

1. Types of box culvert:

a) 1200mm x 1200mm (under road access to masjid)
b) 1500mm x 900mm (main entrance).
2. Types of pipe culvert:
a) 900mm Ø (under road around maahad tahfiz)
b) 450mm Ø (under Blok Akademik and Dewan Makan).
3. 160mm Ø Perforate sub-soil : around area masjid (parking lot and padang).
4. 300mm HRGW : perimeter drain

There are three layers before locating box culvert and pipe culvert, which is the bottom layer,
was compacted soil layer, followed by crusher run (compacted with rolling compactor) and
finally sand for leveling adjustment. Before the excavating process, surveyor will take the
responsibility to know how deep of soil should be excavated. It is because they should follow
the gradient level, which will make the flow of run surface water that entered into sump
smoothly, not ponding inside culvert. The gradient level should be higher from existing water
inlet and finally lower at water outlet that continued to existing drainage. For sealing process,
at inside culvert will use cement where at outside, they use geo-textile to join the culverts

3.1.4 Inspection Test Plan

An inspection test plan (ITP) is a commonly required document that will need to submit
with construction quality control plan. Client want to see our inspection test plan whether the
company in a private sector or government contract. Client want to know exactly what
inspections and tests will be forming to control quality in their project. In addition to telling
the client what inspections and tests that will do to control the quality, the ITP is also a
checklist for company to log the results of company inspections and tests during the project.
Usually, site supervisor were supervise this inspection test. The most important thing is site
supervisor must fill in the request for inspection (RFI) form and will be submitted to the
consultant. Inspection test title, date and time need to confirm for make sure consultant is
clear what to do. Then, consultant or clerk of work will check at site for example checking the
steel reinforcement bar whether it is installed based on drawing or wrongly. If there have an
error in the installation of the reinforcement bar, so the contractor must tell workers to redo
the installation immediately. After the consultant was satisfied with the inspection, they will
endorse the RFI form and contractor can proceed with another work. In addition, have a lot
tests that commonly do at site to control the quality of the project like slump test, pile
dynamic test (PDT), pile integrity test (PIT), pull out test and etc. All tests will be carried out
by subcontractor that was involved in the project.

3.1.4.1 Pile Integrity Test

A pile integrity test also known as low strain dynamic test, sonic echo test, and low
strain integrity test is one of the methods for assessing the condition of piles or shafts. It is
cost effective and not very time consuming. This test is also can detect honeycomb or pile
breakages of piles. The name ‘low strain dynamic test’ stems from the fact that when a light

impact is applied to a pile it produces a low strain. The impact produces a compression wave
that travels down the pile at a constant wave speed similarly to what happens in high strain
dynamic testing. This procedure is performed with a hand held hammer to generate an impact,
an accelerometer or geophone placed on top of the pile to be tested to measure the response to
the hammer impact, and a data acquisition and interpretation electronic instrument. The test
works well in concrete or timber foundations that are not excessively slender. Usually the
method is applied to recently constructed piles that are not yet connected to a structure.
However, this method is also used to test the integrity and to determine the length of piles
embedded in structures.

3.1.4.2 Slump Test

This is a site test to determine the workability of the ready mixed concrete before it is
placing to final position inside the formwork, and is always conducted by the supervisor on
site. However in mid of concreting process , site supervisor should visually finds that the
green concrete becomes dry or the placement of concrete has been interrupted , a re-test on the
remaining concrete should be conducted in particular of the pour for congested reinforcement
area. The height of the concrete slump needs according with concrete mix design. For
information, concrete grade set by the JKR in this project is to grade 35.

3.1.4.3 Concrete Cube Test and Compression Test

The cube test is the test most commonly used for determining concrete strength in any
project construction. After the slump test done, a few sample concrete will be put into
concrete cube cast. A 150mm (6 in.) cube of concrete is cast, is cured for the appropriate time.
For this project, by the due date of the short period project, the contractor has set a time to
carry out the test cube. There are 3 time frames, where it is 1 day, 3 day and 7 days. All
concrete samples were put into six casts, where two casts represent all these testing time.
After concrete sample hardened, it removed from cast and put into curing tank. At the time of
the test, the sample is then compressed into compress machine test at test laboratory. The
stress at failure is taken to be the compressive strength of the concrete.

3.1.5 Site Progress report

Every month, the contractor should do the meeting for explain about the project
progress. Usually the meeting will be done twice in the month except upon request by the
client or the person who involve in that project. The meeting usually attends by the client,
architect, consultant, and the contractor. However, before the meeting, the contractor should
make the progress report before the meeting start. The content of the progress report was:

3.1.5.1 Project introduction

a. Contract summary
b. Project brief
c. Site organization
d. Location plan
3.1.5.2 Schedule and work programme report
a. Physical progress

3.2 PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED/OVERCOME

Over the practical, there are some problems faced by the contractors at the project site.
the problems faced by them is:

i) There is a leak in the drainage system after the installation on grid line 14 / D - I. the
leaking occurs between the box culverts on the grid line.
Solution:
The contractor excavates the ground around the box culvert that had problems and
make repair work. They replace existing geo-textile and put the new geo-textile and make
the fill work.

ii) During installation secondary beam to make building connection between new structure
column and existing column, there is little difference in distance between them.
Solution:
The contractor make discussion with a client and the supplier of steel structure to do some
modifications from the original plan as soon as possible after have word from client so
they will not had delay progress from project schedule.

iii) The most obvious problem is the problem of water retention in soil works such as
backfill jobs in the event of rain. Stagnant water often, especially in the area you want to
do the pile cap concrete work and drainage work.
Solution:
Contractors need to complete the drainage works near the outflow posted access
to water can flow directly into existing drains. Water pump is used to suck water through
a pair and continue to be directed to existing drains.

3.3 EXPERIENCED GAINED

With this industrial training, which has been made compulsory by the university, it will
give a lot of benefits to the student upon stepping into the world of working. These exposure
which consist of multiple aspects such as theoretical and practical, are very useful especially
in civil engineering.

All the experiences that gained from the training in the B&I BUILDERS SDN BHD are
very useful because from here, I could learn about how to manage the project, to control the
quality of the project, to handle the problem at the side, to maintain the schedule of the project
still on the date until the handover completed project to the client. Beside that I have learn
about site job and site activities. I also involve in the site meeting report preparation and it
give me a lots of experience.

At the same time, I could improve my own knowledge. I have also been trained to
disciplined myself and always being remind to be punctual and responsible to finished the
task that have been assign to me along this practical.

3.4 SUGGESTION

To increase the effectiveness and success in class knowledge, especially in producing

innovative and productive graduates, every feedback and suggestion for those who have gone
through the industrial training is crucial. This is because these students have experienced it
themselves and possibly they are able to identify any weakness of the industrial training
development centre in planning the program for the student particularly the student of
University Teknologi Mara, Pulau Pinang.

Those are among the suggestion:

39
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT
BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (HONS)
CIVIL (INFRASTRUCTURE)

i) Lectures should explain the scope of program that should be emphasized before and
after going for the industrial training.
ii) Student should be exposing to the relevant computer programming to assist them in
doing office chores using the computer. This is to ensure that these students are
computer literate and updated.
iii) Other than that faculty should be appointed lecturer from industry which is have more
experience in this field cause they can teach student based on real site. So, student can
learn and understand a topic successfully.

3.4 CONCLUSION
After completing this industrial training, which is has taken two month n two weeks, it
can make a conclusions that the understanding of theories in the civil which have learn at the
university obtain during my studying in university still not enough. This is because the
theories have to be adjusted according to the syllabus in the class. In my opinion, it is not a
waste for the university to send their student to be exposed to the real situation as compared to
what have been learning in the university. These efforts should be encouraged because it is
not just helping the student in term of academic but also experience that can be used as a
guided in the future.
