Date Due Part 1 – Research Project - week 6 : Friday June 5
Part 2 – Project Submission- week 9: Friday June 26
Weighting 25%
Task Number 2

Warning: Late assessments tasks must follow the Tempe High School Assessment Policy. It is the student’s
responsibility to ensure that the Task/s is/are submitted by the due date and notify the teacher if there are any
extenuating circumstances.

Outcomes Assessed:

5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects.
applies and transfers acquired knowledge and skills to subsequent learning experiences in a variety of
5.5.1
contexts and projects.
evaluates products in terms of functional, economic, aesthetic and environmental qualities and quality
5.6.1
of construction.
describes, analyses and evaluates the impact of technology on society, the environment and cultural
5.7.2
issues locally and globally.

Description of the task:

As a part of your learning on control systems in Engineering, you are to undertake research and activities based
around the microbit makecode online prototyping system – a digital control system based on coding and the
connections of various input and output components. The task is split into two parts.

Part one is a report focusing on the impact of digital control systems on our society, the environment and culture
Part two is the proposal and planning of an engineering project that uses the Microbit control system.

You will submit any written work via Google Classroom for assessment.

Task requirements
Part 1 - Due Week 6: Friday, June 5.
Research Report
● Describe the term “logic control system” and how it is relevant to engineering.
● Research at least three different examples of logic control systems used today in a range of engineered systems.
Choose examples from three different areas of society. For each example complete the following using images and
text.
1. Describe where and with what the control system is used. (What systems, products, or environment does it
control?) ie, aircraft, automobiles, construction, data systems (internet servers), shopping malls etc.
2. Detail functional and aesthetic aspects of the logic control system in the product/system/environment in which it
is installed. Size, environmental conditions of regular function (ie high temperature, dusty, high altitude etc.), other interdependent
systems, overall function of the system (i.e. designed to control flight systems in a passenger jet) .

3. Evaluate the impact of the logic control system and its related local and global impacts on:
➢ Society - i.e. people, cultures and the economy (locally - where this system is installed, globally - t he cumulative global
effects of this engineered system en masse)

➢ The Environment (locally - W

hat on local environments, soil, rivers, waste, local air quality, etc. globally - global warming, ocean
pollution, microplastic pollution, damage to wildlife globally etc.)

➢ NOTE: Use a Positive/Negative/Improvement evaluation structure for each of these four impacts.
Report writing guidelines
➔ Reports are written for business, scientific and technical subjects.
➔ A report is a short, sharp concise document written for a particular purpose and audience.
➔ Clearly sets out and analyses a situation or problem and may make recommendations for future action. It is factual
and well structured. It usually has numbers sections and a clear contents page to allow easy referencing.
➔ Includes a bibliography.

Part 2 - due week 9: Friday, June 26

Practical Activity
➢ Open the website makecode.microbit.org. This is an online logic control system design tool.
➢ Here you will find a range of activities which will be automatically saved as you work through them. They will be ready
to share with your teacher at any time.
➢ Complete the 6 tutorials starting with the “flashing heart” - Take on tougher projects to meet your skill level
➢ Continue on with the Games section starting with “rock, paper, scissors”
➢ Once you are proficient and confident, design your own digital creation(s). They could be works of art, games, fashion
accessories, music, toys or tools. HAVE FUN!
➢ Adapt and improve on the code in the tutorials in your own projects, detailing how you have made these
improvements in your own document attached to the Assignment Submission when it is available.
➢ Extension Task: Provide evidence and documentation of the creation of your very own Microbit project.
