Clemon Green Campus Fresh Campus:

The Green Star:

Idea Elaboration:

The goal of the idea is to ensure a sustainable .cleaner and fresher campus –which is easily accessible and
intend to reach almost all the people on a campus.

Under this idea , portable/non portable dustbins will be kept in places where it can be easily reachable
.Alongside all the dustbins will have a moisture sensor ,to separate bio-degradable or non-biodegradable
waste and put them aside .
That’s the concept of a smart dustbin, nonetheless dustbins. Here’s why this particular kind of dustbins
will reach more people than usual dustbins.

Each of the dustbins will have an electrical card reader inserted into them, hence like a vending
machine ,each time a person will throw a waste in the dustbin and scratch his/her student ID card ,the
machine will keep a count and assign the person a point. Thus, the more waste you throw at the dustbin,
the more point you collect.

The point collection track can be made available online in University Website / Facebook page easily –
there can be online weekly top chart to encourage students – which can be further enhanced by awarding
them with cash offers/prizes via third party sponsors, if possible.

Annually, the person/persons with the highest score can be awarded /praised on and off the campus,
entitled “Clemon Green Star of the Year” on social media as well.

Objective and Context:

This is apparently a simple idea, but has a lot of effect. In the modern age of connection, validation and
popularity – this kind of awarding for cleanliness concern will engage all kind of people in the activity, of
whom many could be indifferent previously.

Alongside, the idea will encourage the group of people who were previously concerned of waste disposal
in the correct place but lost enthusiasm due to no appreciation. This acknowledgement will inspire them
to continue their good work.

The maximized use of waste products and introducing second and third level recycling of waste recycling
to university students is also an important objective of this idea.

The Birth of the Concept:

The birth of the concept came from the thought that most of the university going students are aware of
environmental pollution, nonetheless many of them callously throw waste here and there and oftentimes
people who’d take some extra steps to throw a chips packet in a dustbin are even mocked in particular
groups.

This is why ,instead of just another awareness campaign ,they needed to be awarded, at least
acknowledged ,Then more and more people will understand the gravity of this matter enthusiastically and
engage themselves in these works .

A small on campus research was done on DU that, most undisposed wastes comes from food and drink
packaging. The strategy is to set up at least one dustbin a bit far alongside each locally popular food
places and café .In such a way ,people who are eating-on-the-go can throw the packaging properly .

Idea Analysis:

- These particular dustbins will have much larger capacities and will be fewer in number, since affording
many electric card readers can be expensive. Nonetheless, it will be more efficient to dispose and recycle
waste since it differentiates biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. This plan can be strategically
improved as in the food places /cafes can involve in a partnership with Green Star Administration and
offer a treat to the person who threw the most food packaging waste in their nearby bins.
- Alongside the separated bio-degradable waste can be turned into fertilizer and /or sold, whilst the non-
biodegradable ones can be recycled .Thus revenue can be earned and this can turn into a scalable idea.

- Moreover, the statistical data auto updated on waste disposal can be used in surveys and researches-
providing deep insight on socio-economic factor of sustainable development.

- The persons acknowledged in Clean Star campaign could act as an ambassador to create more
awareness. In Bangladesh, trees are also dying due to air pollution- resulting in lesser O2 production due
to layers of particle and dust. In Dhaka mostly, school, college and university campuses contain a large
portion of trees and greenery .They can volunteer as to clean the tree from the particle dust and inspire
others as well.

The Fact – backlashes:

The project may seem more costly than many other programs to launch at first, but it’s sustainable and
needs zero to none surveillance. Alongside, mentionable revenue can be earned from this project as well.

Secondly, the only backlash it might have to suffer is from street children who earn livelihood by clearing
undisposed waste. Even though they collect very few wastes in campus, and it is an undesired practice for
them as well, their conditions have also been considered in the idea. They can be provided education and
weekly/monthly lunch money – (as per the income from the waste disposal) if possible. So instead of
being withheld , it will push the notion will proceed both socially and economically.

Budget Breakdown:

 Moisture sensor : 3 dollars (approx.)

 ID card reader: 100 dollars
 These equipment costs up to 8000 taka.
 12-15k for a complete package with container ,which can carry up to 100-150 kg once filled -
 Example Case Study :
DU area is near 600 acres. But no data of waste management study has been found on DU area,
but based on similar parameters ,a study was done
At AIT at Thailand with similar area and environment (near 400 acres, with nearly
2000 students) A research was conducted and it was found that near 1.3 tons of waste are being
generated / day which equals to nearly 0.5 kg per capita.
For DU, it rounds up to 0.3 kg per capita considering facts like amount and type of waste disposal.

Fig: Statistical Data of Waste Disposal Survey in AIT, Thailand (2012)

Nearly 12 percent of that university participated in that survey.

Hence, 1-2 bins can contain enough wastes produced by up to 2000 university students.

Final Cost Range: 12 - 25 Thousand BDT (varies from Campus to Campus)

- One time

- With none to zero repairing service

- Energy efficient

Economic benefit:

The wastes produced are already separated in bio-degradable and no bio-degradable portions
and hence, can be easily recycled- the recycled waste can be profitable under further waste to
wealth programs.
Considering the fact that, existing daily waste cleaning cost will reduce largely with far more
efficient and quicker cleaning process and extended activities –this is worth the money. It will
also catch the interests of many more NGOs and organizations. Thus ensuring a greener
campus, a fresher society and a greener country.
To conclude ,this idea can reach the internet –oriented ,fast paced young generation faster
than most other awareness programs and conclude both micro and macro involvement –
ensuring a cleaner ,fresher better campus for all of us ,for a better future.
