Globalization of Culture Through the Media; Crossing Borders: development, learning and the
North – South divide
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Difference between cultural imperialism and globalization
2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that globalization was a
balanced global effort brought about by each country’s desire for development. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that globalization is led by
the Western industrialized countries, mainly America. It is undeniable that the picture of
globalization is that of Western cultures being adapted by others. As stated in the article, “the
popularity of Big Macs, Baywatch and MTV are touted as the unmistakable signs of the
fulfillment of Marshall McLuhan’s prophecy of the Global Village” (Kraidy, 2002).

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I did not know of any debate being held
about cultural imperialism. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
realize that there was a debate in 1973 at the General Conference of UNESCO. It was held
because of concerns that developing countries were not at the same advantage as Western
developed countries.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that referring or group countries
as North and South, First World and Third World, was a relatively harmless action and was
just acknowledging countries as they are. However, reading the article/understanding the
lesson, I now think/realize this may actually contribute to prejudice against these countries as
well as confinement to just how much their countries will develop (i.e. Third World countries
will remain Third World countries). It may also cause people to subconsciously group
minority countries into the “poorer” countries.

iv. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I did not know about the concept of
planetarity. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that
planetarity is a new concept that demands one to think beyond the constraints of arias,
regions, and continents. This may lead to theorization of various phenomena, though , of
course, not all will be progressive.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. If labels like North and South were to be eradicated, what then would be more
appropriate labels for countries?
