Every item begins with a short list of materials that you need to get you started, More often than not ll that you require is a pencil, ruler, scissors, paper, and a few other everyday materials that can be found around the home, Tt is a good idea to keep all these materials in a safe place, like a box with a lid, and out of reach of any younger members of the family. Please remember that ‘many cutting tools, especially craft knives, can be very sharp. So when using a craft knife, do your cutting on a piece of old board so that you do not cut yourself or damage any surfaces. We hope you have lots of fun and wish you happy holidays! You will need: A clean blade of grass 1 Cup your hands together, with your thumbs facing you. Place the clean blade of grass in the space between, your thumbs. (You may have to ask someone to help you do this, or else uncup your hands to pick up the blade of grass.) ~% 2 This drawing shows step 2 in greater detail See how the blade of grass is held tightly in place by the tip and base of each thumb. 3. Bring your hands to your lips. Blow into the space made by your thumbs. The blade of grass will vibrate, producing a loud whistle-like sound, Musical drinks tin This is another fun way to make a whistle. You will need: ‘Two plastic drinking straws Sticky tape Empty soft drinks tin 1. Fasten the two straws together with small lengths of sticky tape. Then stick the two straws to the top of the soft drinks tin, making sure that they lie flat along the top next to the hole. 2 Hold the tin and blow into the straws. The air that you blow will travel down the straws and across the hole of the tin, making a sound rather like the whistle of a boat i 1 Place the card flat on the table, Start to roll up one of the comers nearest you ‘There are many times when you will want to cheer and encourage your friends. This megaphone will help you do just that, without you having to strain your voice by shouting. You will need: ‘Thin card Sticky tape Scissors | | 2 Keep on rolling the card over to make a cone shape. 12 13 Megaphone 3 Fasten the edges together with pieces of sticky tape. Using scissors, trim off the top of the cone to make itcircular. Then cutoff the bottom of the cone to make the mouthpiece. 4 Bring the megaphone up o your lips and speak into it. Your voice will be carried over a long distance. 4 Instant music ‘Making musicis fun. Here are a few quick and simple ideas that can be used to produce music for a festival orparade. Make all these instruments, and forma band with your friends. Harmonica ‘You will need: Sheet of tissue paper Comb 1 Fold the paper over the comb, 2 Place to yourlips. Blow and hum tomake the tunes. 2 Pluck or strum the elastic bands quite vigorously to make the tunes. Guitar ‘You will need: Several elastic bands, of various sizes Empty shoe box 1 Stretch the elastic bands over the shoe box. 16 Maracca or shaker You will need: Rice or dry beans ‘Two empty yoghurt cartons Sticky tape 2 g& 1 Pour a quantity of rice or dry beans into one of the yoghurt cartons. Ww 2 Place the second yoghurt carton on top of the first and tape them together as shown. 3 Shake the yoghurt cartons up and down to make the sound of a maracca or shaker. Be 18 Drum ‘You will need: Brown paper Round box or tin String Spoons iH) 1. Use the string to fasten the brown paper tightly over the open end of the box or tin. 19 3 Use the spoons as drumsticks to beat on the drum, but be careful not to split the paper. Cymbals ‘You will need: Two old saucepan lids 2. 1 Hold the lids, AC one in each hand, and clash them together against each other. 20 Bottle xylophone You will need: Water Bottles Drinking glasses Metal spoon 1 Put different quantities of water into each of the bottles and glasses. Line them up in a row. Tap each. ‘one with the spoon and you will make different musical notes. You can change the note by adding or pouring away some water. a a Ae and nail, make two holes opposite each other in the Tin can stilts base of both tin cans. ‘This is a quick and easy way to make a pair of stilts that are fun to use. Before you start, remove the lids from both tin cans. You will need: Two empty tin cans, same size. (Try cocoa, syrup, or drinking chocolate tins) Hammer Nail Length of strong string or rope Scissors 2 Taking one of the tin cans, pass oncend of the string or rope through one hole and out of the other hole. 1 Tum the tin cans upside-down and place them on the ground oron avery hard surface. Using thehammer 22 23 3. When both ends of the rope are of shoulder length, cut the rope and fasten the ends tightly together in a very strong knot. Prepare the other tin can in exactly the same way. 4 Balance yourself on the tin cans. Hold the rope tightly in your hands. If you take short, quick steps, you ‘can make the sound of a trotting horse pz Tent ‘Camping outdoors can be great fun. Here is an ideal tent to make for a warm and sunny day. You will need: Rope Five wooden pegs Mallet Old sheet One clothes peg Blanket 1 Fasten one end of the rope to a fence or to another firm object. Tie the other end of the rope around one of the wooden pegs. Knock the peg into the ground with the mallet so that the rope is stretched tight. 25, 2 Tic short lengths of rope to each ofthe four comers, Uf the uld sheet, Place the sheet over the rope 3. Fasten a wooden peg to each of the four comer ropes. Knock them into the ground. Fasten the top of the sheet to the rope with the clothes peg. This will stop the sheet from sliding down the rope. Put your blanket on the ground, inside the tent. 26 Glove puppcts Puppets and puppet shows can bé fun. Here is an easy way to make a glove puppet. You will need: Two cotton or knitted gloves Ping-pong ball Felt tip pen Scissors ‘Small piece of card Glue Rabbit puppet 1 Take one of the gloves. Fold down the thumb and the fourth and fifth fingers. 2 Fold the glove down towards you, so that the second and third fingers stick out just beyond the bottom of Po the glove. Roll down the top of the glove to meet the base of the second and third fingers. WY 3 Open out the wrist of the glove as if to tum the glove inside out. 4 Then wrap it around the fingers of the glove, tomake the face of the puppet. (Leave the second and third fingers sticking out to make the ears.) 28 5 Place the other glove on your hand, Insert your forefinger into the head of the puppet, and use your thumb and third finger as the puppet's arms. 6 And there you have a very easy and simple puppet with two long ears, a big head and wo arms 29 rs Bird puppet 1 Put the gloveson yourhands. Crossover your hands with the palms facing each other. Hook together your, thumbs, and flap your hands up and down to make a bird puppet. Duck puppet 1 Take a ping-pong ball. Draw two eyes on it with the felt tip pen. Cut out a beak from a small piece of card. Glue the beak on the ping-pong ball. Cut out a hole in the bottom of the ping-pong ball 30 2 Put one glove on your hand. Stick your thumb inside the ping-pong ball to make an easy duck puppet. Chinese puzzle ‘Tangram isa traditional Chinese puzzle, which is well over 1000 years old. Itconsists of seven different shapes, which you arrange together to form a large square. ‘The puzzle can be played either by yourself or with friends. ‘You will need: Piece of paper 15cm square Scissors N 31 1. Fold the square of paper in half from corner to corner. 3. Unfold the paper. Cut along one fold line to make two large triangles. 2 Fold the triangle in half from right to left. 4 Cutone of the large triangles in half, so making two ‘medium-sized triangles. Put these two triangles on one side. NN 32 33 5 With the remaining large triangle, fold up the bottom point so that it reaches the opposite edge. Press flat and then unfold the triangle 6 Cut along the fold line made in step 5. 7 Now you have a smaller-sized triangle. Put this to one side also. Cut the remaining part of the large triangle in half. 8 Taking piece a, fold down the top right-hand corner as shown. 9 Press flat and then unfold x 10 Cutalong the foldline to make alittle triangle and a parallelogram. 11 Taking piece 6, fold the top righthand corner across to meet the top left-hand corner as shown. 33 12 Press flat 15 Here and overleaf are just a few of the many —— different shapes that you can make from the tangram square. Why not invent a few of your own? and then unfold. 13. Cutalong the fold line to make another little triangle and a square. 8 W2 44 This is the tangram square, Shuffle the pieces of paper together and then try to rearrange them into the large square 4 8) 37 Pinwheel The pinwheel isa very colourful toy to make. Itis also an ideal gift to sell at a local fair. Piece of paper Sem square Scissors Glue Drawing pin Pencil You will need: 1 Fold the square of paper in half from corner to comer, 38 39 2 Fold the triangle in half from right to left. 3 Open out the paper Cut along each of the diagonal lines, stopping about 2.5em short of 4 This should be your finished result 40 5 Bend one corner over (but do not press it flat) and glue it to the centre of the paper. Ah Q 6 Repeat three more times with the other three corners, 7 Push a drawing pin through the centre of the paper and into the pencil. Make sure that you leave enough space for the pinwheel (0 turn around. 0 8 You can either blow upon the pinwheel, or wave it in the air to make it turn around. Helicopter This paper helicopter will rotate just like the blades of a real helicopter. Before you start, cut two strips of paper about 3em wide from your sheet of paper. You will need: Sheet of strong paper (typing paper is ideal) Glue Scissors 1 Place the paper flat on the table. Roll the paper from right to left into a tube shape. 4B 2 Glue the edges of the tube 5. Bend each of the eight strips of paper down at an. together, so that they will angle. These will form the blades of the helicopter. not come undone, wy &S 3 Wrap the two strips of paper around the bottom of the tube and glue 6 This shows step 5 in more detail. them in place. 4. Make eight equal cutsin the tube, cutting down from the top. Take care not to cut through the two paper strips at the bottom end of the tube 4 45 7 Drop the helicopter from aheight and watch it whirl around and around. Ifitdoesnot rotate very well, add another pager strip around the bottom of the tube. 46 Paper parachute This is a quick way to make a fantastic toy parachute. You will need: Piece of thin but strong paper 15cm square Scissors Sticky tape Pencil Strong cotton Pencil rubber iis 1 Fold the square of paper in half from corner to corner. 7 2 Fold the triangle in half 5 It should look like this. from right to left 6 Cut off the small 3 Fold the two bottom top triangle. left-hand corners of the triangle to the top point 7 Open out the paper. It will now be an octagon shape. 4 Fold in the left-hand point of the triangle: 48 49 10 Tie the ends of all the eight cotton threads around the pencil rubber. 8 Stick a small piece of sticky tape over each of the ight corners. Make a tiny hole in each of the corners with a sharp pencil. Cut the cotton into eight equal Tengths. Passeach of the threads through the holes and knot the ends so that they do not come undone. 11 Pinch the top of the parachute. Throw it into the air, and it will open out and float down, just like a real parachute. 9 This shows step 8 in more detail. 50 51 Moving toy ‘This action toy will give you hours of fun on a breezy day. You will need: Sheet of strong paper (typing paper is ideal) Ruler Pencil Felt tip pen Piece of board Craft knife Sticky tape 1 Lay the paper on a table or fat surface. With the ruler and pencil measure and draw out on the paper aborder on the top and bottom 3em deep. Then draw 52 vertical lines cm apart between the two borders as shown. ap 2 Draw over some of the lines in a felt tip pen. The darker lines show you where to draw them. Place the sheet of paper on a piece of board so you don't cut yourself or the table, and then cut along the coloured lines with the craft knife. 3. You will now have produced quite a few little‘doors’ 5 Stick the edges together with sticky tape. in the paper. Cut a piece of string about 40cm long for the tail, pass one end through the bottom point and tie it in place. Thread the remainder of the string through the centre corners and tie in place 4 Fold the other side to the centre 59 58 7 Attach the smaller paper squares to the tail string by wrapping the string tightly around each square to make a bow shape ‘The ‘bows’ give the weight to the ki 8 The best places to fly your kite are a flat feld, the windward side of a hill or near the sea. Repeat with the other five envelopes, making twelve squares in 67 4 Take one of the squares and fold it in half from the bottom to the top. Press flat and then unfold. 5 Fold the square in half from side to side. Fold the top edge down to meet the centre fold line 85 6 Fold the right side edige down tomeet the centreline. 7 Then fold it down again to meet the centre of the Paper. & Repeat the process on the left side edge. 9 Fold the top point backwards to meet the centre line \ 10 Fold the paper in half from side to side. 11 Fold down the top wing so that it meets the side edge a7 12 Fold the bottom wing in just the same way. 13 Unfold the wings again. Sugar mice Sugar mice are great fun to make and they are ideal for a party. ‘You will need: Powdered milk Icing sugar Mixing bow! With the help of an adult, warm the back of each picture stuck on the candle over a lighted candle, turning it around to make sure that every part of the paper is warmed in turn 4 Remove the pieces of paper and sticky tape. You will ind that images of the pictures have been printed on to the candle. ‘Why not make a few coloured candles and give a party for your friends. Then you can all try out the games and puzzles found in this book. Borrow acoin, say the magic word ‘Abracadabra’, and the coin will vanish! Just a trick? No. It is a piece of simple magic with the aid of this magic box. ‘You will need: Scissors Piece of paper Empty matchbox Glue 1 Cut the piece of paper so that it is the same width, and one and a half times the length of the matchbox: tray. Glue one end of the piece of paper to the matchbox cover, inside, at the top. 5 2 Glue the opposite end to the bottom of the matchbox tray 3 Shut the matchbox. Open the unprepared end, Borrow a coin and place it in the tray. 100 4 Shut the matchbox. Say ‘Abracadabra’. 5 Open the prepared end and 6 The coin will have vanished. With the craft knife cut around the monkey, leaving a border of about Lem all the way around. Fill the toe about three-quarters full with dry beans or peas. 3 Turn in the raw edges of the sock and sew up the ‘open end 4 Pull the thread to fasten the end tightly. 107 5 Now make two more juggling balls. Juggling _ Learning to juggle is 2 trick that can be mastered very casily. Juggling will help you to develop speed, rhythm and coordination. You will need: ‘Three juggling balls 1 Start with ball @ in your right hand, and ball 6 in your left hand. 108 2 Toss balla in an arc slightly higher than your head, towards your left hand. 3 Toss ball 6 towards your right hand before ball a arrives in your left hand. 7 LS Fo 4 As soon as ball 6 has left your left hand you must 6 Toss ball « towards your right hand. catch ball a.
