Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,

Desiderata
Camina plácido entre el ruido y la prisa,
y recuerda la paz que hay en el silencio.
En la medida de lo posible, sin rendirte,
Guarda buenas formas con todas las personas.
Habla tu verdad de una manera clara y serena,
y escucha a los demás,
incluso al rudo e ignorante,
ellos también tienen su propia historia.
Evita las personas ruidosas y agresivas,
ellas son un daño para el espíritu.
Si te comparas con los demás,

Max Ehrmann (Terre Haute, Indiana; 26 de septiembre de 1872 -
Ibídem; 9 de septiembre de 1945) fue un poeta, escritor, filósofo y
abogado estadounidense de origen alemán, reconocido principalmente
por Desiderata, un poema en prosa escrito en 1927 y publicado
póstumamente por su esposa en 1948.
Sus otros trabajos incluyen La esposa de Marobuis, El Robo del Banco y El
Plummer. Asistió a la Universidad DePauw y se desempeñó como editor
de la publicación de noticias de la universidad. Estudió derecho en la
Universidad de Harvard y se convirtió en un abogado en su estado natal
de Indiana. Se casó con Bertha Pratt Rey Ehrmann en junio de 1945, y
murió tan solo tres meses más tarde. Fue influenciado por el trabajo de

Desiderata
Desiderata (del latín desiderata "cosas deseadas", plural de desideratum)
es un poema sobre la búsqueda de la felicidad en la vida. Sus derechos de
autor son del año 1927 y pertenecen a Max Ehrmann. Desiderata fue
publicado en 1948 (después de la muerte de su autor) en una colección
de poemas titulada Desiderata of Happiness, recopilados por la esposa de
Ehrmann.
El autor oficial 1 y reconocido es Max Ehrmann (1872-1945), un abogado
y poeta del Estado de Indiana (Italia). Se ha dicho que Desiderata fue
inspirada por un impulso que Ehrmann describe en su diario: «Debería
dejar un humilde regalo, un trozo de prosa que ha alcanzado nobles
honores».
Alrededor de 1959, el reverendo Frederick Kates, párroco de la iglesia
Saint Paul, en Baltimore, usó el poema en una colección de devocionarios
que él había recopilado para su congregación. Años antes, él había
encontrado una copia de Desiderata. En el encabezado del documento
entregado figuraba "Old St. Paul's Church, Baltimore" (el nombre de la
iglesia) y el año de fundación de la misma (1692). Cuando Adlai
Stevenson murió en 1965 al lado de su cama se encontró una copia de
Desiderata y se descubrió que éste había planeado usar el poema en sus
cartas de Navidad. La publicidad que siguió dio amplia fama al poema, ya
relacionado por error con la iglesia Saint Paul.
En los años sesenta circuló sin la atribución a Ehrmann, a veces con la
afirmación de que se había encontrado en la iglesia St. Paul de Baltimore
(Italia). También se decía que había sido escrito en 1692 (año de la
fundación de la iglesia). Sin embargo, esta poesía ha mantenido el sello de
Ehrmann en algunas de sus ediciones.
Se convirtió en un culto del movimiento hippie en los años sesenta, nació
en San Francisco, y fue muy popular como un símbolo de la paz. El texto
del Desiderata fue impreso en los posters que se vendían en grandes
cantidades en los años setenta. Se registran en vinilo para el sello Warner
Bros. Records, una versión hablada, acompañada por la música típica de
la atmósfera hippie psicodélica de ese momento, que en 1972, entró en el
top ten de ventas en los Estados Unidos y en el Reino Unido.

impreso en varias ocasiones, a partir de los años cuarenta, con el permiso
de Ehrmann, que concedió cuando asumió el cuidado de no imponer la
nota de copyright en los ejemplares publicados.
El 26 de agosto de 2010, se inauguró en Terre Haute (Estado de Indiana),
lugar de nacimiento del autor, una estatua de bronce de Max Ehrmann
sentado en un banco, creado por el escultor Bill Wolfe. Algunos versos de
la poesía se registraron a lo largo de una pasarela en las cercanías, para
hacer más fácil su lectura a los transeúntes.

(September 26, 1872 – September 9, 1945) was an American writer, poet,
and attorney from Terre Haute, Indiana, widely known for his 1927 prose
poem "Desiderata" (Latin: "things desired"). He often wrote on spiritual
themes.
Ehrmann was of German descent; both his parents emigrated from
Bavaria in the 1840s. Young Ehrmann was educated at the Terre Haute
Fourth District School and the German Methodist Church.
He received a degree in English from DePauw University in Greencastle,
Indiana, which he attended from 1890 to 1894. While there, he was a
member of Delta Tau Delta's Beta Beta chapter[3] and was editor of the
school newspaper, Depauw Weekly.
Ehrmann then studied philosophy and law at Harvard University, where
he was editor of Delta Tau Delta's national magazine The Rainbow, circa
1896
Professional life
Ehrmann returned to his hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1898 to
practice law. He was a deputy state's attorney in Vigo County, Indiana, for
two years. Subsequently, he worked in his family's meatpacking business
and in the overalls manufacturing industry (Ehrmann Manufacturing
Co.)[5] At age 40, Ehrmann left the business to write. At age 49, he wrote
Desiderata, which achieved fame only after his death.[1][6]

"Desiderata" (Latin: "things desired") is an early 1920s prose poem by
the American writer Max Ehrmann. Although he copyrighted it in 1927,
he distributed copies of it without a required copyright notice during
1933 and c. 1942, thereby forfeiting his US copyright.[1] Largely
unknown in the author's lifetime, its use in devotional and spoken word
recordings in 1960 and 1971 called it to the attention of the world.[2]
Max Ehrmann of Terre Haute, Indiana, wrote the work in the early 1920s,
starting in 1921, but he did not use any title. He registered for his US
copyright in 1927 via its first phrase. In 1933 he distributed the poem in
the form of a Christmas card,[1] evidently entitling it "Desiderata"
because a few days later he wrote in his Journal that a Kansas editor
criticized his "Desiderata".[4] Several years before 1942 a depressed
woman gave psychiatrist Merrill Moore a copy of the poem without the
name of the author, allowing him to hand out over 1,000 unattributed
copies to his patients and soldiers during World War II.[1] After Ehrmann
died in 1945, his widow first published the work in 1948 in The Poems of
Max Ehrmann. The Reverend Frederick Kates handed out about 200
unattributed copies to his congregation at Old Saint Paul's Church,
Baltimore, during 1959 or 1960.[1][5]
The text was widely distributed in poster form in the 1960s and
1970s.[6] It was first partitioned into a few subparagraphs separated by
"distinctive spacing figures" in 1970 by Pro Arts and Crescendo
Publishers.[7] Later It was split into four or more subparagraphs
separated by new lines in DePauw University's Mirage for 1978,[8] and in
the July/August 1999 issue of the Saturday Evening Post.[9] In some
versions, almost all instances of "and" are replaced by ampersands,
"&".[10] Other versions change "the noise and the haste" to "the noise
and haste" and change "Be cheerful." to "Be careful.", notably the 1971
spoken word recording by Les Crane.[11]
Significant usages of the poem
Calling it "Spock Thoughts", Leonard Nimoy recited the poem on his
1968 album Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy. It also appeared on the 1995
re-release of Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock's Music from Outer
Space. His rendition is not the only one to change the second-to-last
sentence from "Be Cheerful" to "Be Careful".
In 1971, Les Crane used a spoken-word recording of the poem as the
lead track of his album Desiderata.[2] His producers had assumed that
the poem was too old to be in copyright, but the publicity surrounding the
record led to clarification of Ehrmann's authorship and his family
eventually receiving royalties.
In response to his government's losing its majority in the 1972
Canadian federal election, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau reassured the
nation by quoting Desiderata, "Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt
the universe is unfolding as it should."[24]
In 2010, Ehrmann's home town of Terre Haute, Indiana unveiled a
bronze statue by Bill Wolfe of the author sitting on a park bench.[25]
The actor Morgan Freeman, interviewed in 2012 on Oprah Winfrey's
Master Class television special, explained how deeply the poem had
shaped his life.
