Key Changes & Additions Being Proposed in Revision of IS 456 code & IS

1343(for PSC)
1. General Aspects :
a. Unified Code for PCC, RCC and Prestress CC. IS 456 and IS 1343 shall be merged.

b. Commentary is proposed to be given with codal norms.

c. Instead of existing two Category of Limit state i.e. Design and Serviceability,
Revise IS 456 shall have 6 Limit states – Safety, Serviceability, Durability,
Integrity, Robustness and Restorability. 1st three limit state shall be compulsory
for all designs and other 3 shall be for special structures as per client decision.

d. Focus to change from strength and serviceability based design to Strength,

Serviceability and Durability/Sustainability based design.

e. Stringent design and analysis provisions specially w.r.t Columns and Walls, Shear
stirrups, Max reinforcement in Columns, beams and slabs, Min thickness of
slabs/columns/wall, open structures/frames, flat slabs & thin PT slabs
discouraged, unified design of framed structures and PT slab etc

f. High Strength Concrete upto M100 included with new Stress-strain curves,
Elastic modulus of concrete, shear stress, flexural tensile stress, creep and
shrinkage parameters.

g. Method to Design a structure for Durability to be introduced.

h. Method to calculate Design Life of RCC/PSC structures to be included.

2. Materials :

a. Manufactured aggregates to be added

b. Water from various sources added, meeting defined codal properties. Not much
change in properties of water for concrete.

c. Numerous types of Cements, Cement Mineral admixtures, chemical admixtures,

curing compounds described in detail with new permissible limits.

d. Ultrafine GGBS ( like Alcofine) to be added.

e. Chemical admixtures for corrosion inhibition, permeability reducing
admixtures(PRAN & PRAH), shrinkage reducing admixtures etc to be included
with detailed limits.
f. Properties of concrete- flexural tensile strength, creep, split tensile strength,
shrinkage coeff. and new stress-strain curve for different grade of concrete from
M20 to M100 to be included instead of single curve at present.
g. Steel Reinf – Fe600 added.
h. New min and max. ratio for Actual Ultimate strength / Yield strength for steel to
be defined.
i. Different grade of steel in same RCC structure not permitted.
j. Durability design method based on Carbonation and chloride induced corrosion
to be introduced.
k. New Exposure Classes and environments defined. Climatic zoning map of India
added for durability based design.
l. For different exposure classes and environments and type of cement, Code will
give detailed table for requirement of cover, w/c ratio, min grade of concrete,
min Cementatious content and electrical resistivity.
m. PPC & Slag Cement better for coastal region as it help in resisting Chloride
corrosion but OPC better than PPC and PSC for non coastal /non aggressive
region where stress due to carbonation is critical.
n. Special protections systems for durability of structure in aggressive environment
added i.e. coatings on concrete, galvanizing of steel, SS steel, corrosion
inhibitors, cathodic protection of steel etc.
3. Design Aspects :
a. Limit state of design to continue with same partial factor of safety
b. But New Stress Strain curve for M10 to M100 grade concrete.
c. RCC members shall be designed invariably as under reinforced section. Hence, In
addition to characteristic strength of concrete and steel, concept of limiting
strength of concrete and steel introduced for design of new structures. Limiting
strength shall be less than characteristic strength.
d. Concept of Over strength i.e. actual strength of concrete and steel also
introduced which is typically more than characteristic strength. Over strength
shall be assessed and considered to determine life of old structure for
restoration and rehabilitation purpose.
e. For this purpose, Detailed Correlation between cut core strength of concrete and
characteristic cube strength of concrete shall be given.
f. Linear Elastic design, as before, prescribed for Limit state of design for normal
structures however non linear design for special structures essential for Limit
state of Integrity, robustness, restorability.
g. Displacement type loads i.e. temperature, creep, shrinkage, foundation
settlement, elastic shortening and earthquake shaking load given more focus
besides Force based load i.e. DL, LL, WL, Earth pressure etc. for special
structures.
h. For simple/normal structures, Simplified structural analysis based on moment
distribution retained and encouraged. However for special structures, finite
element based linear or non linear analysis to be adopted.
i. Design for Shear –No change. Shear stress values for different grade of concrete
introduced upto M60.
j. More guidelines for strut and tie model design analysis basis.
k. New Formulae of determining Modulus of elasticity of concrete.
l. Design of Columns and walls to be based on same principle and formulae.
m. Stirrups to be designed for Fe415 value though actual application higher grade of
Fe500 or more can be used for designed dia and spacing of stirrup.
n. Clear details on Beam-column, Wall-Beam, old and new concrete, anchorages,
settlement of foundations, and numerous such aspects, creep, temperature,
o. Max reinf in slab -1%, beams-2% and columns -4% proposed. Minimum sizes of
slab, beams and columns to be made stringent.
p. Bond strength of concrete for steel reinf, for upto M40 concrete introduced.
Bond strength for higher grade concrete to be same as for M40
q. Overall structural design of buildings will be substantially changed with new
code.
r. Minor changes shall be many and major changes shall be some in revised code.
