Chapter 1

Topic: Instructional Materials (Please identify the specific topic to be discussed)

Objectives: (To make sure that the students will know the specific objective that we want them to
attain)
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Define instructional materials.
b. Identify the roles of instructional materials and its criterion.
c. Internalize the values and importance of instructional materials.

What you need to learn: (This part is the lesson already. We are going to put the details of the
lesson we need to teach them. PS, the more detailed and on point it is, the better)

A. DEFINITION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

What is Instructional Materials?
Instructional Materials are educational resources used to impose student’s
knowledge, to develop their skills and unlocking their hidden talents and abilities that the
students really have to explore. According to Onyejemezi (1997), instructional materials are
educational resources and are considered as any item of information, a place of evidence, an
idea or series of combination of the development of student’s ability to learn, think, tell,
discriminate, and create. Instructional materials are also the vehicle of transfer of information
from one person to another.
Instructional materials refer to the human and non-human materials and facilities that
can be used to ease, encourage, improved and promote teaching and learning activities.
They are whatever materials used in the process of instruction. They are a broad range of
resource which can be used to facilitate effective instruction.
Instructional materials are defined as resources that organize and support instruction,
such as textbooks, tasks, and supplementary resources (adapted from Remillard& Heck,
2014).
Instructional materials are the content or information conveyed within a course. These
include the lectures, readings, textbooks, multimedia components, and other resources in a
course.
B. ROLES OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The roles that instructional materials can play in the three main instructional modes of
teaching or learning namely: Mass Instruction, Individualized Learning, and Group Learning.
I. Mass Instruction
This method of teaching is commonly utilized in all school, either
public or private, in the past until now in the present. Mass instruction method
can accommodate more learners that could be educated or trained without
necessarily increasing the number of teachers to the teaching and learning
process.
II. Individualize Learning
Individualized learning is a method of teaching in which the content,
the instructional materials used, and the pace of learning are based upon the
abilities and interest of each learner. Closely related to personalized learning,
goals based on curriculum design and standards may be the same for all
students, but the individual learning profile and plan for each student may
vary.
III. Group Learning
Group learning is an approach that used by the teacher to engage in
learning with collaboration, interaction and exchanging of different ideas and
concepts. (Gardner, 1983)
C. VALUES AND IMPORTANCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
1. To help clarify important concepts.
2. To arouse and sustain student’s interests.
3. To give all students in a class the opportunity to share experiences necessary for new
learning.
4. To help make learning more permanent.
Why is it Important?
Instructional materials are highly important for teaching, especially for inexperienced
teachers. Teachers rely on instructional materials in every aspect of teaching. They need
materials for background information on the subject they are teaching. Young teachers
usually have not built up their expertise whenever they enter into the field. Teachers often
use instructional materials for lesson planning.  These materials are also needed by teachers
to assess the knowledge of their students. Teachers often assess students by assigning
tasks, creating projects, and administering exams. Instructional materials are essential for all
of these activities.
D. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
1. Appropriateness. Instructional materials must be fitted to the learners’ level and needs.
Materials should always be congruent to the objectives and suits the mental or cognitive
level of the learner.
2. Authenticity. The IM’s must be real and original. In presenting instructional materials,
bear in mind that each material represents their genuine purpose and plays an actual role
that conforms based on facts.
3. Interest. Materials must catch the learners’ interest and attention. Students should be
able to get in the flow of the topic by the use of the IM’s. This can only be done, if the
materials are eye-catching, direct and creative enough to cope up with the learner’s
diverse interest.
4. Organization and Balance. Making instructional materials is not all about creativity or
how colorful and attractive your materials are, what is important, is that it should also be
knowledgeable and shall offer students enough ideas and insights to have balance.
5. Cost. As a teacher we should be practical. In making our IM’s, we should not allow
ourselves to be used in using expensive materials, but instead we should be innovative
and creative enough to use the available resources around us without spending too
much.

Example: (This part of the module will give students examples of the topic being discussed.
Especially to major subjects such as math, science and language subjects since topic can be
emphasized more using examples.)

Try it your own: (In this part of the module, we teachers will be giving them set of examples where
they should be trying to do themselves. Such, we teachers are encouraged to give the answer to the
topic discussed every week so that the students can reflect on which part they are wrong.)

Activities: (This part is not necessary since it is the teacher’s prerogative if he/she will be giving
activities to the students using the module or they will just send it to the students daily)
