Minutes of 16th Board of Studies Meeting


DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

The 16th Board of Studies meeting of Department of Civil Engineering, Sona College of
Technology (Autonomous), Salem held on 15-05-2020 at 10.00 a.m. online using Microsoft
team app.
The following members were present:

Dr. R. Malathy, Chairman of the Board of Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, Sona
College of Technology, initiated the meeting with a warm welcome to all the members present
and all the members introduced themselves.

The following items were discussed and the corresponding resolutions were adopted:
1. Discussion of Vision, Mission, Programme Educational Objectives, Programme
Outcomes, and Programme Specific Outcomes
2. Discussion of the curriculum for Under Graduate course B.E.- Civil Engineering from
semester III to VII for Regulation 2019
3. Approval of the curriculum:
 Under Graduate course B.E.- Civil Engineering from semester III to VII for Regulation
2019
 Post Graduate courses (M.E.-Structural Engineering and M.E.-Construction Engineering
and Management) curriculum of semester III for the Regulation 2019
4. Approval of a syllabus:
 Under Graduate course B.E.- Civil Engineering of semester III for Regulation 2019
 Post Graduate courses (M.E.-Structural Engineering and M.E.-Construction
Engineering and Management) curriculum of semester II for the Regulation 2019
5. Discussion and approval of one-credit courses for B.E.-Civil Engineering

During the deliberations of the 16thBoard of Studies meeting, the members recommended the
following points for improving the Curricula.
 Dr. R. Malathy, Chairman of the Board of Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, Sona
College of Technology, gave a brief introduction about the department's activities and
achievements and also discussed Vision, Mission, POs, PEOs, and PSOs.
 Dr.S.R.R.Senthilkumar, Principal, Sona College of Technology & Chair, BoS, gave a brief
introduction about college as well as the department and also explained about the present
scenario in the industry.
 Mr. Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona College of Technology, gave a brief
introduction about college and suggested to incorporate the following contents in the
curriculum. They are e-learning, virtual labs, and BIM applications.
 Mr. Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona College of Technology, explained the current
scenario prevailing in the construction industry. He explained about industry 4.0 and also
suggested to introduce the contents of Drones Surveying, Artificial Intelligence in the
curriculum.
 Dr. P. Manikandan, the coordinator of the Board of Studies, briefly explained the
curriculum for Under Graduate (B.E.-Civil Engineering) from semester III to VIII for
Regulation 2019. Dr. P. Manikandan also briefly explained about credits for various

courses offered in the curriculum for Under Graduate (B.E.-Civil Engineering) from
semester III to VIII for Regulation 2019.
 For adding survey camp, innovative projects, Internship / Academic attachment, and
Industrial Lecture as a new course in the curriculum, an amendment was proposed by BoS
Chairman. All BoS members appreciated and unanimously agreed upon this initiative. The
course Internship is hereby included in the curriculum.
 Dr. K. Chinnarasu and Dr. T. Palanisamy suggested renaming the following courses,
Mechanics of Solids as Strength of Materials-I, Strength of Materials as Strength of
Materials-II, Fluid Mechanics as Mechanics of Fluids, and Hydraulic Engineering
Laboratory as Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.
 Dr.Chinnarasu, Dr.Subrahmanya Sastry, Dr. T. Palanisamy, Er.V.Sriraman suggested
rearranging some of the courses in the curriculum. Environmental Engineering and
Environmental Engineering Laboratory are shifted from Semester V to Semester IV,
Estimation and Quantity Surveying from Semester VII to Semester VI, Computer-Aided
Civil Engineering Drawing shifted from Semester III to V.
 Dr.Subrahmanya Sastry suggested including the following contents inappropriate place of
the curriculum/syllabus. They are the Concept of IoT, Real-time projects, and
prefabricated structure.
 Dr.Subrahmanya Sastry suggested including the topic of BIM, MEP in Laboratory course
Computer-Aided Civil Engineering Drawing.
 Similarly, Er.M.Sudhakar suggested including the concept of Introduction to Radar system
inappropriate place of the curriculum/syllabus. They are the Concept of IoT, Real-time
projects, and prefabricated structure.
 Er.V.Sriraman suggested introducing the course Construction Management in before 6 Th
semester.
 Mr.Abeneth Ramachandran suggested about introducing the importance of the smart city
in surveying course.
 Dr.Chinnarasu suggested the courses like Environmental Engineering, Irrigation
Engineering in every semester of the curriculum.
 Dr.DepakMuniraj suggested splitting the Civil Engineering Software Applications
Laboratory into two parts. The first part of the lab course deals about the structural

engineering details and the second part deals about the construction scheduling and
estimation.
 Dr. K. Chinnaraju and Dr. T. Palanisamy suggested on introducing a new course such as
Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering and Structural Design and Drawing
Laboratory in semester VI and VII respectively.
 After the discussion of the curriculum for Under Graduate (B.E.-Civil Engineering) from
semester III to VII for Regulation 2019, the BoS members approved the curriculum of
Regulation 2019.
 Dr. K. Chinnaraju explained the importance of certain courses like Strength of Materials-
I, Strength of Materials-II, Structural Analysis-I, Structural Analysis-II, and so on. To
avoid the missing basic concept of structural engineering, the syllabus of the above-
mentioned courses were discussed and the committee approved the new agenda.
 The BoS members suggested incorporating the concept of complex stress in the Strength
of Materials-I. As per the suggestion of BoS members, the following contents have been
added in Strength of Materials-I. They are uniformly varying load and concentrated
moment, Composite beams, Combined bending and torsion of shafts, Design of buffer
springs, Springs in series and parallel and laminated springs
 Dr.Chinnaraju suggested on adding the following topics in Strength of Materials-II
“Unsymmetrical bending of beams of symmetrical and unsymmetrical sections – Shear
Centre - curved beams-Winkler Bach formula-Stresses in hooks”.
 Dr.Chinnaraju and Dr.T.Palanisamy suggested separate units for influence lines for
determinate and indeterminate beams and also suggested for incorporating the concept of
cables and suspension bridges in Structural Analysis I.
 Dr.Chinnaraju suggested flexibility method instead of flexibility matrix method and
stiffness method instead of stiffness matrix method in Structural Analysis II. Also
suggested on introducing the concept of plastic analysis in the same course.
 Dr.Chinnaraju and Dr.T.Palanisamy suggested the following modifications in mechanics
of fluids. Based on the suggestions, concepts of fluid properties and fluids statistics, fluid
kinematics, and dynamics are merged and syllabus was revised accordingly.
 Regarding the upgrading of the syllabus, Dr. Suresh, Dr. Logeshkumr, and Prof. Shalini
interacted with Er. M.Arunkumar, Dr.Chinnaraju, and Dr.T.Palanisamy. After discussion,
Dr.T.Palanisamy suggested adding the following contents in the course as “Concept of

hydraulic gradient and total energy line, Pipes in series and parallel, Water hammer in
pipes and Measurement of flow through notches and weir”.
 Dr.Chinnaraju and M.Arunkumar suggested the contents upgradation of model studies.
Based on the suggestions, the contents were revised. They are “Model analysis-Similitude-
Types of similarities-Types of forces acting in moving fluid-Dimensionless numbers-
Model Laws-Classification of models: Undistorted and distorted models”.
 All BoS members suggested on elaborating the name of the test for bricks, cement, fine
aggregate in construction materials and practices.
 Er.M.Sudhakar and Er. Kingsley. J. D. Ernest suggested on incorporating artificial sand,
introduction about NBC in construction materials and practices.
 Dr.Chinnaraju, Dr.T.Palanisamy, and Mr. Arun Jeya Prakash suggested the following
modifications in Surveying. Based on the suggestions, concepts of chain surveying,
compass surveying and leveling, theodolite and trigonometric leveling, tacheometric
surveying, contours, concept of curves, and triangulation are merged and syllabus revised
accordingly.
 Mr. Arun Jeya Prakash suggested incorporating about drone surveying to both theory as
well as the laboratory course.
 Dr.Chinnarasu suggested incorporating the centerline marking of building in surveying
laboratory.
 Dr.P.Manikandan proposed special amendments, because of the pandemic situation
COVID-19, for attending the industrial training for Post Graduate courses (M.E.-Structural
Engineering and M.E.-Construction Engineering and Management) of semester III for the
Regulation 2019.
 All the BoS members appreciated and unanimously agreed upon this initiative and all the
members suggested the following for the industrial training for Post Graduate courses
(M.E.-Structural Engineering and M.E.-Construction Engineering and Management) of
semester III for the Regulation 2019. Initially, the members advised to current
amendments only applicable for the students admitted for the academic year 2019-2020.
 Resolution for the amendments are due to the pandemic situation COVID-19, the students
either can take the industrial training as in the following ways like an online internship or
online structural design training/ Research Assistantship and so on.

 Dr.R.Malathy listed and explained the one-credit courses organized in the Department
during the winter vacation. They are 
 Structural Design Using Staad Pro
 Earthquake Resistant Design Using ETABS
 Drones Surveying
 3D Interior Design Using Revit Architecture
 All the BoS members asked for the course outcomes of the one-credit courses. 
 Prof.S. S. Prabhakaran, in charge of one-credit course, Department of Civil Engineering,
Sona College of Technology, clearly explained the outcomes of the above-mentioned
courses. All BoS members appreciated and unanimously agreed upon this initiative. 
As there was no other item introduced by any member for discussion, the Chairman, BoS,
adjourned the meeting. Thanked the members for their participation and valuable
suggestionsand concluded the meeting.
