William Louis Sonntag (American, 1822-1900)
N.B. This small landscape by William Louis Sonntag likely dates from later in his career. In her monograph on Sonntag, Nancy Dustin Wall Moure
describes a change in Sonntag’s style around 1870, in which the artist moved away from the broad vistas and large canvases of his “classic” style of
the 1860s toward more intimate scenes and smaller size canvases with more poetic handling. The change may have been influenced in part by the
Barbizon painters, whose works had been introduced to America by William Morris Hunt in the 1860s and had found favor with collectors. Sonntag’s
color palette also changed during this period, assuming a more limited range that coincided with his interest in portraying the atmospheric effects
of sunrises, sunsets, moonlight, and misty weather. During and after the Civil War, Sonntag no longer painted his former haunts of Virginia and
Kentucky, but turned to New Hampshire and the White Mountains for inspiration, spending summers in the area of Shelburne on the Androscoggin
River.1 Interestingly, the back of the frame of this painting is inscribed “Shelburn [sic], N.H.”

John F. Francis (American, 1808-1886)
N.B. John F. Francis was born in 1808 in Philadelphia, and lived and worked in Pennsylvania. Little is known about his art training, although he
began his career as a portrait painter in the 1830s and 1840s. He turned to still life painting in the early 1850s and, during the next thirty years,
became one of the most accomplished still life painters of the 19th century, establishing himself as “the master of luncheon and dessert pictures.”1
Francis was interested in the ordering of shapes and in expressing the individual, tactile qualities of the objects he depicted. His still lifes range
from simple table-top studies to elaborate compositions with fruits, nuts, cheeses, baskets, serving pieces of glass, ceramic, and metal, and
various utensils, set usually against a simple background but occasionally with a view through to a landscape on one side. In After the Hunt, Alfred
Frankenstein wrote that Francis used a very limited repertoire of items in his still lifes and often repeated motifs, making his paintings difficult to date.
Frankenstein further noted that dated paintings were somewhat rare, citing only twelve dated examples from 1854 to 1879 among the oeuvre known
to him at that time.2 In the painting at hand, one of his more elaborate, Francis employed some of his favorite motifs, the rough-cut watermelon,
various fruits opened or quartered, and a fruit basket draped with a fringed napkin.

Provenance: Gift to Georg Ruckmann (1870-1961) of Lübeck, Germany, from a doctor that fled to Turkey before World War I; by family

N.B. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Erol Makzume, and the work was documented in Elisa Zonaro’s photo
archives. We wish to thank both Erol Makzume and Cesare Mario Trevigne for their assistance with cataloguing the lot.
Zonaro was born into a Paduan family of modest means, and had he not shown artistic promise as a child, would have been
apprenticed into his father’s bricklaying trade.1 He was fortunate to attend a technical school near his hometown, and was later
sponsored by a local noblewoman to attend the Accademia Di Belle Arti G. B. Cignaroli in Verona for his artistic training.
After graduation, Zonaro moved to Venice where he opened his own studio on the Grand Canal. He developed a fine reputation
for picturesque views and genre scenes which was bolstered by ducal patronage. Despite his commercial success, Zonaro grew
dissatisfied by the late 1880s with his lack of artistic growth and sought ways to distinguish himself from his contemporaries.
At this juncture, he made two critical decisions—the first was to take a year-long sabbatical in Paris to learn new techniques.
Zonaro’s works created after this intensive year are considered to be in his mature style, where “the product of his training in French
Impressionism, Venetian coloring, and Neapolitan realism were fused.”2
Zonaro’s second life-changing decision was to move to the city of Constantinople. He was fascinated with the exotic vision of this
outpost of the Roman and Ottoman Empires, and opened a studio there in 1891. Through his skill and the promotional efforts of
his wife and former pupil Elisabetta (Elisa) Pante Zonaro, he was introduced to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918) who
selected him as his court painter in 1896. Zonaro remained at the court until Abdul Hamid II’s regime was overthrown in 1909, and
returned to Italy thereafter.

Frederick Carl Frieseke (American, 1874-1939)
N.B. Frederick Carl Frieseke is regarded as one of the leading American Impressionists. Born in Michigan, Frieseke began his studies at the Art
Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students’ League in New York, before heading to France in 1897 where he would live for the rest of his life. He
studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Lauren. He was influenced in his early work by J.A.M.
Whistler, with whom he may have studied briefly, and also by the works of Monet and, more especially, Renoir. Frieseke rented a house in Giverny
in 1906, and for the next 14 years he spent summers painting there with other expatriate artists drawn to the area by Monet. Following World War I,
Frieseke left Giverny, settling instead in Normandy. Shifting away from Impressionism toward realism, Frieseke’s later paintings tend to have quieter
palettes and contemplative moods.
Frieseke received many prizes for his work, including a gold medal in Munich (1904), and both gold medals and a popular prize for his painting Torn
Lingerie from the Chicago Art Institute (1920).
The painting at hand will be included in The Frederick Carl Frieseke Catalogue Raisonné, being prepared by Nicholas Kilmer with the support of the
Hollis Taggart Galleries. A letter to this effect from Mr. Kilmer accompanies the lot. The painting will be dated “by 1920.” The landscape setting is
Cagnes-sur-Mer along the Mediterranean coast of France near Nice.

N.B. Dasburg first arrived in Taos, New Mexico, in January 1918, at the invitation of Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy patron and avant-garde literary
bohemian.1 Over the next decade and a half, Dasburg split his time between Woodstock, New York, and Taos, and in 1935, chose to reside near
Taos full-time.
The present work shows the influences of two important modernists on both sides of the Atlantic—Paul Cezanne, whose works Dasburg first
encountered in 1909 while living in Paris; and John Marin, whom he was introduced to in New York and befriended in Taos over the summers of
1929 and 1930.2 Though Dasburg worked in a variety of media, ink and pastel are considered by many to be his most engaging, as they showcase
his skill in creating rhythmic lines.

Tancredi Parmeggiani [called Tancredi] (Italian, 1927-1964)
N.B. Tancredi was born in Feltre, a remote Northern Italian town in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains. In his late teens, he headed south to the
coastal metropolis of Venice where he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti. Tancredi had already exhibited at galleries in both Venice and Rome,
including the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, when he met Peggy Guggenheim in Venice in 1954.1 Guggenheim became his patron by providing
him with studio space and exhibiting his work in her palazzo.2
He first exhibited in the United States in 1958 at the Saidenberg Gallery in New York, and continued to exhibit in solo and group shows in Europe,
including the 1964 Venice Biennale.
Tancredi was associated with the Movimento Spaziale, a group founded by Lucio Fontana, who believed that “matter should be transformed into
energy and invade space in a dynamic form.”3 Unlike Fontana, who chose to break up the pictorial plane by cutting into his supports, Tancredi
maintained the integrity of his paper and canvas supports and instead focused on compositions which threatened to float, spill, or explode into the
viewer’s space.

In a letter dated July 6 and 7, 1953, Wilber relays his conversation with
Twombly to Munson regarding the scope of the show—“He then is
planning a show with you in October as we planned. His NY show is
planned for November, but the things will be different. I have talked him
into picking things from everything he has now. He is going to make
it as diversified as possible, some expressionist things he did in 1949,
into semi-cubist abstractions into abstract expressionism into pure
abstraction. He is going to include…a couple sculptures…The choice
will be tremendously diversified.”1 Wilber further points to The Little
Gallery’s small exhibition space and the monumental size of Twombly’s
recent work as reasons for assembling a retrospective show.2 The
present work, which had been in the Munson family collection until
1995 and was referred to by Barbara Munson as “my Twombly which
doesn’t look like the work which he is famous for,” is believed to have
been purchased from Twombly in this show.

2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with
respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of
description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made
at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.
3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed
bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot
for sale.
4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the
purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of
the date of sale.
Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If
any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and
the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three
days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after
deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser.
5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank
authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check
until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the
drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.
6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of
all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without
limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b)
offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to
pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.
7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such
purchaser for such item.
8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within
the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that
include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of
licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute
cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.
9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number.
Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and
other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of
Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.
10. Except for property purchased via on-line Live Auctions, a premium equal to 18.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus
10% of the final bid over $200,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price. The buyers premium on
property purchased via on-line Live Auctions will be in the amount equal to 22.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 15%
of the final bid over $200,000.
11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person,
through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or
reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The
copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this
catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our
prior written consent.
13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or
choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in
connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any
federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or
hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
