MOLINO DAM
HISTORY OF MOLINO DAM
➢ Also known as Prinza Dam

➢ From 1780 to 1893, the hacienda administrators built forty-

five irrigation dams with tunnels, waterways, and irrigation
canals in order to channel available water sources to
excellent use, that way securing rice paddies during
extended drought periods.
HISTORY OF MOLINO DAM
➢ Constructed in the 18th century by the Spaniards, during
the Spanish Colonial Era.

➢ It was built in the 18th century to irrigate the surrounding

rice fields in Las Piñas & Bacoor.
MOLINO DAM
➢ One of the pressing problems that have occupied the
administrator's attention was the Prinza Dam. Father Moreno
redacted a letter urging the "need and great convenience of
repairing the Prinza Dam" especially due to protracted drought
periods.

➢ The 1885 drought moved the parish curate to request for the
rehabilitation of the dam wall answer the need for food of many
residents. It would be extremely beneficial for San Nicolas, he
reasoned out, if the walls of the dam were raised higher.

➢ The proposed repair aimed to provide more water capacity to the

Prinza Dam. On April 24, 1885, Provincial Definitorium
approved the budget proposal of 3,926.00 pesos and the dam was
reconstructed.
MOLINO DAM
➢ In commemoration of Saint Ezekiel Moreno's
dedication and contribution to the people of Cavite
and Las Piñas City the local government embarked on
a joint project entitled "Rehabilitation and Restoration
of Prinza", a beautification and preservation effort to
develop their sections of the historic dam into parks. A
layer of cobblestones were also added to the upper
deck of the dam and safety posts on both sides were
added as guide for the pedestrians.
PRESENT CONDITION OF
MOLINO DAM
 Currently, the Prinza Dam serves as a footbridge for easy
access between Las Piñas City and Bacoor, Cavite.

 It is no longer used for irrigation as the surrounding land

around the dam are now residential areas.
PRESENT CONDITION OF
MOLINO DAM
 Now, the dam is an exciting tourist destination where one
can eat and dine on a bamboo floating restaurant.

 Serves as a recreation area and as a tourist attraction.

MOLINO DAM
➢ Impounds: Zapote River

➢ Height: 10 meters

➢ Length: 450 meters

➢ Width: 600 meters

MOLINO DAM
➢ A gravity dam on the Zapote River located on the
border between Barangay San Nicolas I in Bacoor,
Cavite and in Las Piñas, Metro Manila, in the
Philippines.

➢ Its walls made out of adobe rocks (height ranging from

25-30 stacks) and some parts of the flooring made out
of cobblestones.
MOLINO DAM
➢ It is a man made irrigation dam use to irrigate the
land and surrounding rice fields they own and leased
out in the present cities of Las Piñas and Bacoor.

➢ This dam effectively raised the level of water in the

upper Zapote River three stories high; the same level as
the fields and separated the fresh water coming from
Almanza and the Molino River from the salt water of
the lower Zapote River.
ADVANTAGES OF MOLINO DAM
 During the Spanish period, it helps to irrigate the land
and surrounding rice fields.

 The growth of vegetation flourished because of the

natural composition of the building materials.

 Separated the fresh water coming from Almanza and

the Molino River from the salt water of the lower
Zapote River.
ADVANTAGES OF MOLINO DAM
 Easier to travel from Las Piñas to Bacoor Cavite as it
serves as a connecting foot bridge between the two
places.

 As it now serves as a tourist spot. It is now more

economical to the people residing close to the area.
ISSUE AND CHALLENGES:
 Protracted drought periods.

 During 2018, visible bubbles starts to form at the

surface water of the dam. According to the DENR, it is
possibly the result of the pressure and the quality of
the water.
SOLUTIONS:
 Repair and rehabilitation of the dam to increase it
water capacity.
