The Holy Spirit – is given (1898-1908)

Acts 15:8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness,
giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is
shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the

word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye
believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is
the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased
possession, unto the praise of his glory.

1 John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him,

and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit
which he hath given us.

1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us,

because he hath given us of his Spirit.

It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the
believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His
Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated
tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His
church. {DA 671.2} (1898); {RH, May 19, 1904 par. 3}

Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His
guidance and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their
demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings
all other blessings in its train. It is given according to the riches of the
grace of Christ, and He is ready to supply every soul according to the
capacity to receive. {DA 672.1} (1898)

The earnest of the Spirit (1880-1906)

2 Corinthians 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of
the Spirit in our hearts. (KJV)

2 Corinthians 5:5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is
God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

Friday and Sabbath were very important days to our brethren and
sisters. Friday afternoon I spoke upon the unity of the church and
invited those forward who wished a nearness to God and those that had
unhappy differences. This was a time of humiliation of soul. Many
confessions were made and many hearts were broken before God. The
Lord indicted prayer, and we had the earnest of the Spirit. When we
rose from prayer, Brother Gray’s face was shining with a holy light.
This is the man that was once a gambler, a liquor drinker and tobacco
devotee. What a transformation! He confessed that he never felt as he
did then. He could say he knew his sins were forgiven. Sweet peace and
unexpressible joy pervaded his soul, and all believed it for his very face
expressed it. {Lt27-1880 (May 2, 1880) par. 2} (1880)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt27-1880.2&para=4449.8

Our brethren and sisters come to camp-meeting hoping to receive the

blessing of the Lord; yet it is often the case that they do not know just
what to do to make the meeting a benefit to themselves or to others.
Many do not realize but that the only object for which they came is
merely to hear preaching. Therefore they do not strive for the blessing
of God, they do not from the very commencement of the meeting feel
the necessity of confessing their sins, and striving for the earnest of the
Spirit. They do not know that the success of the meeting depends
largely upon themselves, and therefore do not feel the burden of the
work. The very first effort of ministers should be to set them in the way
of working for themselves. Let the minds and hearts of the people be
enlisted in the work. Let all be taught what they must do to open the
door of the heart to Jesus, that they may receive him gladly. {ST May
17, 1883, Art. A, par. 7} (1883)

Our only safety is in keeping fast hold of Jesus. Never are we to

lose sight of Him. He says, “Without me ye can do nothing” (John
15:5). We must cultivate an abiding sense of our own inefficiency and
helplessness and rely wholly on Jesus. This should keep us individually
calm and steadfast in words and deportment. Excitement in the speaker
is not power but weakness. Earnestness and energy are essential in
presenting Bible truth, the gospel, which is the power of God unto
salvation. {Lt102-1894 (February 6, 1894) par. 7} {2SM 59.2}
There are quicksands upon which many are in danger of being
swamped. It is always safe to seek for the earnest of the Spirit of God,
if we do not mingle with it a force and presumption that is not heaven
born. There is need of caution in all our utterances lest some poor souls
of ardent temperament shall work themselves up into a zeal not
according to knowledge. They will act as though it was their
prerogative to use the Holy Spirit instead of letting the Holy Spirit
use them, and mold and fashion them after the pattern of the divine.
There is danger of running ahead of Christ. We should honor the Holy
Spirit by following where it shall lead. “Lean not unto thine own
understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). This is one danger of those who teach
the truth to others. To follow where Christ leads is a safe path for our
feet. His work will stand. Whatsoever God saith is truth. {Lt102-1894
(March 16, 1894) par. 14} (1894.03.16)

Once it was my privilege to speak in a smaller tent, which was

crowded full of young men and young women. Soon after I began
speaking, older ones tried to crowd in. I had great freedom, and the
tender Spirit of God was with me. The Saviour seemed to be close
beside me. I dwelt upon the Christian experience to be gained from the
ministration of the Holy Spirit promised in the twenty-eighth chapter of
Matthew. All hearts were touched. I was much refreshed and
strengthened. It is the earnest of the spirit of life through Christ that
every soul needs now, just now. There is not the least excuse now for
any one’s departing from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and
doctrines of devils. Those who follow their own sophistries do this from
their own choice, in the face of light and evidence. The Lord Jesus
recognizes the real value of sincere belief in His personality, which, tho
unseen, is viewed by the eye of faith. {Lt248-1906 (July 27, 1906) par.
4} (1906)

The Holy Spirit – given in rich, large measure (1901-1904)

But in order for us to fulfill God’s purpose, there is a preparatory

work to be done. The Lord bids us empty our hearts of the selfishness
which is the root of alienation. He longs to pour upon us His Holy
Spirit in rich measure, and He bids us clear the way by self-
renunciation. When self is surrendered to God, our eyes will be opened
to see the stumbling stones which our un-Christlikeness has placed in
the way of others. All these God bids us remove. {6T 43.2} (1901)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_6T.43.2&para=118.216

Jesus gives the Holy Spirit in large measure for great emergencies,
to help our infirmities, to give us strong consolation, to illuminate our
minds, and purify and ennoble our hearts. Christ becomes unto us
wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. From the first to
the last of the Christian life, not one successful step can be taken
without Christ. He has sent his Spirit to be with us constantly, and by
confiding in Christ to the uttermost, surrendering our will to him, we
may follow him whithersoever he goeth. {RH June 26, 1894, par. 8}

The Holy Spirit - given without measure (1883-1911)

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for
God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. (KJV)

“And,” declared John, “the Father giveth not the Spirit by

measure unto Him.” So with the followers of Christ. We can receive of
heaven’s light only as we are willing to be emptied of self. We can
discern the character of God, and accept Christ by faith, only as we
consent to the bringing into captivity of every thought to the obedience
of Christ. To all who do this, the Holy Spirit is given without
measure. In Christ “dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
And ye are complete in Him.” Colossians 2:9, 10. {8T 334.2}(1904);

Here are revealed the heights of attainment that we may reach

through faith in the promises of our heavenly Father, when we fulfill
His requirements. Through the merits of Christ we have access to the
throne of Infinite Power. “He that spared not His own Son, but
delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give
us all things?” Romans 8:32. The Father gave His Spirit without
measure to His Son, and we also may partake of its fullness. Jesus
says, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your
children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy
Spirit to them that ask Him?” Luke 11:13. “If ye shall ask anything in
My name, I will do it.” “Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be
full.” John 14:14: 16:24. {GC 477.1} (1911)

God gave us a precious experience in those days. When brought in

close conflict with the powers of darkness, as we frequently were, we
laid the whole matter before the mighty Helper. Again and again we
prayed for strength and wisdom. We would not yield the point; we felt
that help must come. And through faith in God, the enemy’s artillery
was turned against himself, glorious victories were gained to the cause
of truth, and we were made to realize that God gave not his Spirit by
measure unto us. Had it not been for these special evidences of God’s
love, had he not thus, by the manifestation of his Spirit, set his seal to
the truth, we might have become discouraged; but these proofs of
Divine guidance, these living experiences in the things of God,
strengthened us to fight manfully the battles of the Lord. {RH

Every truly converted soul will be intensely desirous to bring others

from the darkness of error into the marvelous light of the righteousness
of Jesus Christ. The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which
lightens the whole earth with his glory, will not come until we have an
enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be
laborers together with God. When we have entire, whole-hearted
consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an
outpouring of his Spirit without measure; but this will not be while
the largest portion of the church are not laborers together with God.
God cannot pour out his Spirit when selfishness and self-indulgence are
so manifest; when a spirit prevails that, if put into words, would express
that answer of Cain,—“Am I my brother’s keeper?” {RH July 21, 1896,
par. 2} (1896)

The Holy Spirit – is received (1900-1903)

Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the
Holy Ghost. (KJV)

Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be
baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world,
but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are
freely given to us of God.
Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit
by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the

Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the
Spirit through faith.

As you receive the Spirit of Christ—the Spirit of unselfish love and

labor for others—you will grow and bring forth fruit. The graces of the
Spirit will ripen in your character. {COL 67.3} (1900)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_COL.67.3&para=15.245

Christ prayed for His disciples, “I pray not that thou shouldest take
them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the
evil.” [John 17:15.] This prayer is the rule by which you are to regulate
your life. Those who receive the Spirit of Christ realize that there is in
His words more than appears on the surface. The Christianity of the true
believer looks beneath the surface, and sees in Christ’s teaching a
religion perfectly adapted toe very human being—a religion ever
actively engaged in doing good. {Lt4a-1902 (January 3, 1902) par. 17}
