SCENA heavy -THRASH METAL DIN

BRAZILIA

(the Brazilian heavy-thrash metal scene)

Brazilian thrash metal is a regional scene of thrash metal music that originated during the 1980s in Brazil.
Along with Bay Area thrash metal, and Teutonic thrash metal, it was one of the major scenes of thrash metal
in the 1980s. Though not as large or well known as the North American or European thrash movements, it is
still a pivotal point in heavy metal, as it bridges the gap between the thrash of the mid-80s and the death
metal scene later in the decade.

1980s: The beginning

During the early eighties, bands from the U.S., Germany and Canada, such

as Metallica, Slayer(U.S.), Destruction, Kreator (Germany), Voivod (Canada) and Exciter (Canada) appeared.
At the same time, Brazil had a growing scene as well, and were also influenced by the same
music: NWOBHM and hardcore.

Brazilian rock has its roots in the 60s, developing from the movement called Jovem Guarda, passing through
the stages of progressive rock and finally transgressing into heavy metal. In 1982, the first Brazilian heavy
metal LP was released by the band Stress from the city of Belém from northern Brazil. The punk scene in São
Paulo was emerging as well, the band Restos de Nada ("Remains of Nothing") was formed in 1978.

The European and North American heavy metal and hardcore have been a great influence on all these bands,
but the first thrash metal (or speed metal) album released officially in Brazil was a split album between two
bands in 1984. The split album Ultimatum, with bands Dorsal Atlântica and Metalmorphose, came out around
the same time as Kill 'Em All by Metallica, War and Pain by Voivod, and Sentence of Death byDestruction.

Dorsal Atlântica from Rio de Janeiro were pioneers because of their record being officially released, but
there were other bands releasing demos, like Vulcano from São Paulo and Sepultura from Belo Horizonte.

Late 1980s and early 1990s

Sepultura was making success outside of Brazil. The last thrash metal albums to represent the "old-school"
style of thrash in Brazil wasMass Illusion by Korzus (1991), Arise by Sepultura (1991), Rotten
Authorities by Executer (1991), and The Laws of Scourge by Sarcófago(1991).

Mid and late 1990s

Entering the 90s, thrash was mixed with alternative metal, grunge, industrial music and in Brazil specifically,
with the Brazilian "roots" music. Sepultura and Overdose (from Belo Horizonte), mixed thrash with tribal
sounds. Bands that didn't simply disappear from the scene, had to adapt their sound to new genres that were
appearing, such as was the case with Sepultura.[1]

Korzus brought the NYHC influences to their sound with the KZS album. Sarcófago put a drum machine in

their last studio album entitled Crust. A band from Belo Horizonte named The Mist became an "industrial-
thrash" band and Dorsal Atlântica turned into a hardcore/crust variant. Ratos de Porão experimented an
approach with alternative metal before returning to a more punk-influenced sound.

During the 1990s, the most important bands to appear in the decade were Scars, Distraught and Zero Vision. But
their sound had a greater influence from groove metal of Machine Head than that of thrash metal.

2000s onward
In the 2000s, bands Executer and Holocausto had their "come back", and Max Cavalera's Soulfly released an
album that is almost "old-school" thrash with the mixing of new and old styles, the band Ratos de
Porão returned to the crossover style.
There are a lot of new thrash metal bands existing together with the old ones who returned. New bands since
the year 2000 have been releasing albums on independent record labels. Bands such as Midnight
Route and Torture Squad have been frequently touring across South America and Europe.

Regional scenes

There were three regions where the Brazilian thrash metal was originated (Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Rio
de Janeiro). The most prominent of the three scenes, was from the city, Belo Horizonte,
where Sepultura came from.

In Belo Horizonte, the scene had some of the most extreme bands, close to what became to be named
as death metal. Bands such as Sepultura, Sarcófago and Mutilator continued further and were in some ways
more extreme than the German Teutonic thrash. The band Sarcófago has influenced most of the
European black metal and death metal bands.

In São Paulo, the scene was closer to crossover thrash or what is more commonly known as American
thrash. Bands such as Ratos de Porão and Lobotomia, played a style more akin to hardcore and started
transforming into a more thrash metal sound, alongside the original thrash metal bands, such
as Korzus and MX.

In Rio de Janeiro, the bands sounded similar to European bands of the time. Important bands from this time
period were: Taurus, Metrallion, Antitese.

Stress (band)
The Stress is a band of traditional heavy metal source in the Amazon region of Belém - PA .It is
considered the first metal band from Brazil .

The rock and heavy metal in Brazil

Today, the heavy metal is known throughout Brazil. Clips are shown daily on cable TV, the heavy sound is
transmitted without discrimination through the airwaves, magazines make room for new releases, the big
international bands include our country in their tour to hit the public record, and the Internet has fans updated in
real time, not letting it get a new secret.

But it was not always that way. There was a time when none existed.

Since the recording of Round Hours , version of Rock Around the Clock for Bill Haley & His Comets ,
sung by Nora Ney in 1955, the rock became part of everyday life.

Was present in the cultural movements of the 1960s , as the " Young Guard "which was inspired by
the Beatles and The Rolling Stones , and " Tropicalia ", and on a nationalistic appeal and
strong ideological .

He accompanied the manifestations of the counterculture , making artists like Raul Seixas dream of

an Alternative Society .

It was the star of the Woodstock Festival , which in the heyday of hippie , served as a stage for performances
by Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix , whose experimentalism psychedelic influenced the work of bands such as
" The Mutants ".

And so ends the 1960s, a period marked by cultural diversity , where the rock grew, multiplied and took various
forms, subdivided into different styles.

But the scene was not complete. In the following years, other young people with critical and challenging, not
live the experiences of that generation, having knowledge of them only through movies and  documentaries ,
which gave them the impression of the past. For them, something was missing to identify himself with his
temperament and way of being. Something new was coming.

In 1974, when Brazil was still in the military dictatorship , many young people who had just come out of
puberty were raised in a conservative environment. Some of them felt repressed in day to day and
sought a kind of rock that stimulate and serve as a soundtrack to express his outrage.

The release of the debut albums from bands like " House of the Machines , "" The Rosary "" A Barca do
Sol "and the first disc of Rita Lee with " Tutti Frutti "indicated a tendency to rock and roll , the hard
rock and progressive rock .
On the international scene, what was harder was the "heavy rock" played by groups such as "  Led
Zeppelin " Deep Purple "and" Black Sabbath ". The " Kiss "was just released their first album .

Bands like " Motorhead "," Saxon "and" Iron Maiden "did not exist. The very term "metal" had not yet been
linked to heavy to describe the musical style. It's like we're in space. Without gravity. Without weight.

History

Rise of the band

It all started in the city of Belem , state capital of Pará , founded in the early seventeenth century around
the Castle Fortress , built to defend the Northern Region of Brazil 's foreign invasion. Located in the Amazon
region , Bethlehem has always been known for its regional fruits, native foods, the procession of the Candle of
Nazareth and his traditional music: the Carimbó .

At the beginning of the year 1970 , in Bethlehem, had little to do a teen rocker on the weekends. The new
international rock arrived in Brazil with a certain delay. Access to new releases disk was a privilege of few, and
they found it difficult to meet. When they knew there was anyone else like these bands, just trying to meet you
to share the pleasure to hear and feel the energy of the sound: loud, strong and contagious, but strange to
most people.

It was in this climate that, in October 1974, Andrew was invited by Chamon Wilson Para and the Rio Pedro
Silva Lobão to form a rock band.Accepted the invitation and called his childhood friend, Leonardo income to
participate in the project. Leonardo offered his garage for the first test, each chose his instrument and learned
to play together. Peter Wilson and took turns on guitar and bass , Leonardo decided to playkeyboards and
Andre battery . The drum battery was bent, seemed a speck, and for this reason the first band's name was
"Pinngo Water" - with two Enes to be different. Before the end of the year, Peter returned to Rio de Janeiro and
Lima took Paul down. They had also a guitarist named Adonay, the father has forbidden to touch.

In 1975 , Roosevelt Wilson Bala heard singing a song from "Led Zeppelin" at school, and invited him to
be the vocalist. From there, began performing at teenage parties, where their heavy sound caused
surprise and an embarrassment in public, the closest " Bee Gees "," Donna Summer "," Barry
White "and other idols of the disco . It was a time of fun, which helped create a strong bond of
friendship between the band members. In 1977, with the addition of guitarist Peter Valente, the band
was renamed "Stress," and played their first show of that name in a traditional theater in town, called
" St. Kitts ".

Early compositions
In 1978, the stress began to write his own songs. The first was "Stressencefalodrama." At this time,
while the Brazilian bands continued to follow the trail of rock and roll and progressive rock , the Stress
forged his style fast and heavy. In parallel, a certain movement of British bands began to take shape
and was called " New Wave of British Heavy Metal "(New Wave of British Heavy Metal), which stuck out
names like" Judas Priest "," Saxon "," Motörhead " and " Iron Maiden ", practically unknown to the
Brazilian public. The compositions of Stress contained the same amount of weight and fury of
the Britons , but with an original style and unique.

Because there was no freedom of expression in Brazil in the year 1970, all letters were censored
Chamon Andrew, but he always found a way to replace the words that were considered subversive by
others with the same pronunciation. For example, the letter "Rubbish", the term "human garbage" was
vetoed because, according to the censors, denigrated the image of man. It took him to remove two
letters, that would become a "Junk mano" and was released. The song "The Oracle of Judas", which
originally was called "Corpus Christi", also had to be modified.

In June 1979, the show "A Night in the Forest" marked the departure of bassist Stress Wilson Silva, who now
has the participation of Carlos Reimão. Already well known, the band performs several concerts with great
success in Bethlehem

In November 1980, with the show "Stressencefalodrama" Stress hits a record crowd in the theater Waldemar
Henrique three shows "sold out".

The following year, in November 1981, presents the show "Atomic Flower" in the largest gym in the city (the
School of Physical Education) and an outdoor concert in one of the main avenues of Bethlehem (Avenue Dock
Franco de Souza) both sanctioned by thousands of people.

In June 1982, on the eve of a show at the Gymnasium of the Federal University of Para , bassist Reimão
abandons Stress, and vocalist Bala solves definitely take the low.

The first album: Stress

Motivated by the great success in his hometown, the members of Stress travel to Rio de Janeiro, and
hosts in a single room of a small inn in the neighborhood of Catete , to record their first album ,
independently, in shortest possible time, since costs, rather than predicted, increased every day. And
so, on 3 and 4 August 1982, in just 16 hours, a table of eight channels in  Studio Sonoviso , the severe
stress that would be the first heavy metal LP a Brazilian band. But it took a great struggle to record the
weight on vinyl. The sound technician put almost everything to lose. I wanted at all costs leave the clean
sound. He even tried to trick the band, saying that it was unnecessary distortion pedal, as this would be added
in the mix. Despite the scarce resources and lack of preparation of the studio technicians in Brazil, who were
unaware of this type of sound, the stress can impose their style.

After recording, even in 1982, Stress and ride back to Bethlehem for a blockbuster album release. The show is
in " Stadium Curuzu "(stadium club Paysandu ) in November 1982, they play to their biggest audience,
estimated at 20,000 people.

In early 1983, Peter travels to France and was replaced by guitarist Bill Paul. Andrew returns to Rio de Janeiro,
where does the promotion of the album in Fluminense FM Radio , announcing the stress as "the heaviest rock
band from Brazil," and performs the song "The Oracle of Judas" and others in your schedule.

In April 1983, Stress performs his first concert in Rio de Janeiro, in the playhouse  Flying Circus . On reaching
the venue, the members of the Stress had a big surprise: the house was packed and were greeted by fans as if
they were "blown out" in the media. They did not know the song "The Oracle of Judas" had come on the radio
broadcast Fluminense, and really did not expect such a reception. After the presentation, the audience invade
the stage for autographs, surprised the producers, who had never seen the same reaction in any other show at
that location. In testimony at the time, Andrew said he believed the success of stress was due to the fact that its
members were on stage what they would like to watch and identify with your audience, because they lived and
how he felt.

Some months later, the back stress to perform at the Flying Circus, this time without keyboardist Leonardo
Income, and now with the addition of guitarist Sergio Paulo Barbosa in place of the Bill.

The impact on the rock / heavy Brazilian

It was a time of change: several other rock bands began to appear on the national scene, breaking the
monopoly of MPB , which for years dominated the music industry . Many of these bands, who shared the stage
with the stress, they would head the movement that became known as " Brazil Rock ". It was the beginning of
this year 1980 the major labels began to be interested in this movement, and began to search some of
those bands, start by hiring the most business, such as " Red Baron "," Blitz "and" Offence to rigor . "

Although, at first, some newspapers and magazines were included in the movement to Stress "Brazil Rock",
this band has always refused to make their sound more commercial and accessible to the standards of that
era, in which the popular radio stations did not play hard rock.Even filling all the places where they had, the
distorted guitars and the pace accelerated Stress impeded their access to the general public.

Finally, with the announcement of " Rock in Rio ", to be held in January 1985, and dissemination of foreign
heavy metal bands that participated in this festival, the mainstream media first opened space for this style.

The second album: Atomic Flower

Buoyed by the unprecedented release of the metal was achieved, the drummer and vocalist Andrew Chamon
Bala Roosevelt decided to move permanently to Rio de Janeiro in search of new opportunities for Stress.  Were
in place at the right time, and there was a chance to launch their second album through a major label.  They
called the keyboardist and guitarist Paul Leonardo Income Bill, who were in Bethlehem, but they were unable to
travel to Rio remembered the guitarist and bassist Alex Magnum Bosco, who had seen playing in a band of
Niterói, called Heavy Metal , and invited them to record.

And so, amid record releases from bands new wave style of pop music that America was the fad of the season
in Brazil, the stress released in 1985, his second LP: Atomic Flower by a recording company, to PolyGram .

The media coverage

With this, the stress got space in newspapers and magazines from all over Brazil as O Globo, Jornal do
Brazil, Sunday Magazine, The Day, Last Minute, Tribuna de Minas, The Liberal , The Province of Para ,
that is, Amiga, See Sound Three, He and She, Bizz, Roll, Rock Stars, Metal, Encyclopedia of Rock,
Modern Mixtura, Bizzu, Popcorn, Modern Dictionary of Rock, among others.
The album "Atomic Flower" was very well received by critics, referring to the Stress and its work as
follows: "The most traditional Brazilian heavy metal band", "A historical work within the market,"
"Primal name Brazilian heavy metal "," made history in the national heavy, "A highly competent band."

On television, the stress at a variety of programs.

In TV Headline : "More Sound."

Also in TV Headline: "Children's Club" with Xuxa at the beginning of his career. On TV Bandeirantes: "Our
Amazon Series", "Alberto Brizola Program" and "Formula One". In the TV Record, "BB Video".

The Stress was also invited by TV Globo to defend a song called "Young People should not die" in the "Festival
of Festivals", and members traveled to Recife to participate in the first stage to be held on July 27, 1985. The
festival's official arranger Cesar Camargo Mariano, liked the work of the stress that gave carte blanche for the
band to make his own arrangement. After having already tested the music and the movement of the stage, the
author of the music began to create problems and try to interfere in the arrangement of STRESS, saying it had
been very heavy.

Not agreeing to relieve their sound, eventually leaving the stress of participating in this festival, ripping the
chance to show your work to the general public.

It was also in 1985 that TVE of Rio de Janeiro produced the first "  clip "of stress, with the song" Atomic Flower
". This work was aired on "Fantasy" at a time when the format of "clips" was still new and was not disclosed as
today.

Fidelity to heavy metal

While not reaching the level of anticipated sales by the label, stress led an underground movement in
heavy Rio de Janeiro, whose temple was a place named dark Cave situated beside the largest
playhouse in the city season: the Canecão . In the Cave of the matinee, the stress gave opportunity for
beginner bands make the opening of their shows. These bands, made up of boys was a miner who
reported stress and fans had a very strange name: Sepultura .

Despite the heavy movement of Rio, the record companies were still investing only in the more commercial
bands. The stress began to get offers to soften their sound and become one among the bands that your
charting pop hits in the standard list of radio play.

But the stress has always been very faithful to his audience and, as a matter of principle, refused to change his
style. And as the great martyrs, suffered the consequences of his bravery, losing the contract with the label.

No space in Brazil, the other heavy bands that made up the lyrics in English, began to launch their disks by
foreign labels. Refusing again to change their work, Stress decided to keep his lyrics in Portuguese, and with it
lost support within and outside the country, being isolated between the two movements.

In 1986 , amid the crisis, the guitarist and bassist Alex Bosco resolved to leave the stress, which announces
the open positions to replace them. After several tests, choose guitarist Christian, son of an American and a
Brazilian, and bassist Rick, who do some shows. Rick Christian and fight among themselves, and Rick leaves
the band . Bala returns to low, and, with Andrew and Christian record a demo tape in the studio of Charlie,
former guitarist of the band Offence to Rigor in Sao Paulo .

The STRESS participates in the Festival of Juiz de Fora , and continues to do shows in other cities, until the
Christian, who was also a U.S. citizen, will live for ever in U.S.

Christian is still trying to convince the other members of the band to move to the land of Uncle Sam, but they
decide to stay in Brazil .

After this blow over, the stress is still trying to stay on the road with the guitarist and bassist Alex Alex Schio
Bressan, Juiz de Fora, but these would not be long in the band.

The suspension of activities

Bala and Andrew, who had literally changed their lives for the sake of heavy, out of his city, leaving behind jobs
and diploma, and away from their families could no longer see any light at the end of the tunnel and, in 1987 ,
resolve take a break and wait for the right moment to return.

But what point would that be? The following events seemed to alienate more stress to your goal. Since 1986 ,
the rock had been shaken by the emergence of Axe Music, and from it, by a succession of fads, which for
nearly ten years swept the nation, who never tired of saying that rock was dead.

And so it went, until, in 1994 , the recording industry decided to bet on regional bands as Raimundos and Chico
Science & Zombie Nation , who mixed with rock music of the northeast .

The return and the third album: Stress III

Thinking there's time, Roosevelt Bala vocalist, guitarist and drummer Paul André Gui Chamon meet again to
compose new songs and in 1996, the STRESS released his third album on CD, "Stress III" with independent
production. But the band did not have a northern accent or rhythmic miscegenation desired by the market,
which made this work went largely unnoticed.

Twenty years of heavy metal: the recognition

Finally, in 2001 , when there was almost no hope of a possible return, Stress received an invitation from the
label "Dies Irae" to make the CD and vinyl reissue of their first album, celebrating  20 years of heavy metal in
Brazil. The production was only completed in 2003 , and the album was reissued with international distribution.

As a result, in May 2003, the album received rave reviews in the "in Scheiben" published in the German
magazine "Rock Hard", one of the most important publications of its kind. In this magazine, the critic Boris
Kaiser gave the album 8 note, describing it as a wonderful discovery, a hyper-rare product, which must be
purchased by all lovers of the " New Wave of British Heavy Metal "(the new wave of heavy British metal), and
the US-Metal (the American metal). In his commentary, the German critic adds an exclamation point (!) To say
that the STRESS comes from Amazon , and two (!) advises that when the album was released in 1982 .

In parallel, the importance of stress is recognized in his homeland, and the band is honored by the state
government of Pará, which includes in its official calendar.
Motivated by the international recognition of their work, the stress made an historic concert, on May 13, 2005,
in Bethlehem, where it all began. This show, which marked the return of the band, was recorded by TV Cultura
of Pará, to produce his first DVD.

The day and the launching of the DVD

The news of the return of Stress spreads rapidly through the media. In the press, even in the month of May, the
magazine "Valhalla" includes stress among the ten fundamental national metal bands. In July, the magazine
" Rock Brigade "devotes a page to announce the return of Stress. In September, the stress gives an interview
on "Stay Heavy" in All TV , the first Internet TV in Brazil. In October, the magazine 'Roadie Crew "publishes
coverage of the show's Stress in Sao Paulo, and in November devotes four pages to tell the story of the
band. On television, on 12 July 2005 , the "Newspapers Today" TV Globo shows scenes of the show in
Bethlehem, emphasizing the fact that stress is the first heavy metal band from Brazil, and be influencing new
bands.

In 2007 , the Stress releases a DVD with the show that marked his return in 2005 , including making off ,
discography and a documentary that tells the whole story.

In 2011, the band opened the Iron Maiden concert in Belem, reaching an audience of nearly 15,000 people.

One of the earliest Brazilian metal bands, and the first ones to release an album in Brazil.

In fact their early start has led bassist/vocalist Roosevelt "Bala" to object against the traditional view that Metallica
was the first thrash metal band, claiming that Stress "is the true creator of the style because they played as fast and
heavy as Metallica in "Kill 'em All", besides being older, and they have released an album before ("Stress" was
released in 1982, while "Kill 'em All" was released in 1983)."

No one was technically the FIRST thrash band, it was more a group of bands moving the genre as a whole

Nothing remains of (Restos da Nada)

Nothing remains of the first band was a punk rock of Brazil , formed in 1978 in Sao Paulo [citation needed ] .

History

The band's origins go back to the pre-punk of Brazil, more precisely the class of rocker Carolina
town in the North Zone of São Paulo , where the Brazilian punk movement made his first
chords. Created during the political unrest of the time, sought in existentialism one wonder why their
ghosts and transform your fears into action against the " status quo "under the military regime that
ruthlessly hunted their enemies. [1]

Guitarist Douglas Viscaino played in a band-project he created called Organus and rehearsed the roofs

of the town Smith or where he could, and played blues and rock of his own. The Organus was standing
in the middle of the Village rocker Carolina despite the aversion of all tapes and crazy at the time.

With its proximity to the class of Carolina, Douglas invited his friend and schoolmate Clement for his
band. [1] Later, he joined Ariel and began rehearsing in the house of Douglas with drummer Carlos "Charles",
another rocker who attended the class party Carolina.

Charles played something acoustic guitar, piano, and drums and was the one who knew better musical context
that pre-punk. Had a more accurate musical training within the MPB engaged and excited about the new sound
of punk rock, decided to participate in this new way of doing rock'n'roll.

The sound that rocked the crowd in the late 70's and early 80's in the region, were bands like The
Stooges and MC5 , who defined the style of the Remains of Nothing.

Already playing punk rock and the name Remains of Nothing, did a show on  Construction , in Vila Mazzei , one
of the few halls of rock that existed at the time, in late 1979 , with the AI-5 and NAI (We in Chained Hell) . After
this show, Clemente left the band and will play at NAI and suggests that its name change to  conductors
Corpse . Irene takes on the bass, and in 1980 part of the festival of the defunct TV Tupi , the Olimpop .
In late 1980, with the departure of bassist and drummer Charles Irene, the band dissolved.

Directions of the members after the end of the band

Douglas, Ariel and Irene joined again to form the band imbalance , rehearsing in the Village Carolina,
sometimes in the same garage GroupJudgement , also in the Parish. The end of the imbalance
coincides with the departure of Douglas and Irene of the punk movement and the entry of the
movement to the media at the time, with the event The Beginning of the End of the World , the SESC
Pompeii in November 1982, and the entrance to Ariel the Lambs band formed by Clement and Callegari
after the end of the conductors Corpse.

Douglas has also created an instrumental band in 80 years called Fish Soluble , without much effect, and
the discipline with a sound post-punk , with Callegari, as ex-Innocents, and presented several times in Madame
Satan . Later, he formed with Irene, now on vocals, the bandSoul of Android that followed in the underground
by the year 2000 .

In 1988 the band as Ariel Brain Invaders , in which the singer is today.

Recordings and meetings

In 1987 , Clement Charles, Ariel and Douglas met to record the songs on Nothing Remains of a self-titled
album, released by the Devil drives. At the end of the album is an excerpt of a recording of the show in Building
1979, and in the presentation Olimpop on TV Tupi in 1980.

In 2001 , Douglas and Ariel meet again and the band returns with Luiz Cuga on bass and drums. That same
year released the albumRemains of Nothing II , which brings together recordings made with a recorder K7 with
the band playing live in a vacant lot in Carolina Village in St. Paul, September 20, 1980, and four new songs (  "
I am afraid ' , "They Come and Go" , "oppressor no longer!" and "Pre-History" ), recorded in July 2001 in the
studio Kuaker in Sao Paulo.

In 2007 , already Douglinhas Cuga in place of the battery, release a DVD recorded live at Hangar 110 in Sao
Paulo.

Currently

Currently, the band exists as a project, doing shows with the aim of rescuing a time, showing who has not
seen, the intensity of punk rock 70 years, and are not intended to record new material, as well as recorded in
2001.

The Remains of Nothing has left a great legacy in terms of musical composition, with a gap in the existentialist
and revolutionary lyrics and a more elaborate sound musically, with reference to the Brazilian punk bands that
followed.

Dorsal Atlântica
Dorsal Atlântica was a Brazilian thrash metal band, founded in Rio de Janeiro, in 1981.

They were pioneers of the Brazilian thrash metal scene, being acknowledged as an influence to many
other bands including Sepultura[1][2] and Korzus.[citation needed]

The band's first work appears on the split album Ultimatum with another Rio de Janeiro-based
band, Metalmorphosis, in 1984. Afterwards, Dorsal Atlântica released a string of studio albums from
1984 to 1996, before breaking up in 1997.

Most their lyrics were written in Portuguese. Only some of their work contains two versions
(English/Portuguese), and only one album is fully in English.

The band was always led by guitarist/vocalist Carlos 'Vândalo' Lopes. He is now playing with a
psychedelic/funk band called Mustang.
