1. What is the significance of the research title you have chosen to your Related Learning
Experience?
The research focuses on the health conditions of a Filipino community. That alone proves its
significance to the related learning experience I had because we were tasked to work as student nurses in
a certain community. To elaborate, its significance is that the research stressed the importance of our
responsibility as nurses to give health teachings to our clients or patients. The treatment strategy used in
the study involved assessing and identifying the stressors, or more specifically, the unhealthy habits of the
Filipino Americans and then using those information to formulate and disseminate to them the
appropriate health teachings that will not only decrease their chances for developing coronary heart
disease, but also help them achieve optimum level of health. Some health teaching for this include how to
effectively control cholesterol and blood pressure, weight management, proper nutrition and exercise. In
addition, this was done through the utilization of community health workers, which allowed for focused
and close interaction with the people. As a student nurse who worked in the primary healthcare facility of
a community, the level of facility whose goal is to promote health and prevent illness, I can now better
comprehend how important health education or health teaching is to the maintenance and improvement of
a patient and community’s health and how vital a community health worker’s role is for the health of a
community.
2. What are the implications of the findings to your patient care?
a. Nursing Education
Nurses are educated properly in school and then given exposure to different
clinical settings so that we can practice our skills and enhance our knowledge. The
research emphasizes on preventing illness by educating people, especially those from less
educated communities, about their condition. This implies that patients are in need of
certain health teachings, but in order for us student nurses to do provide them with correct
and sufficient information, we ourselves have to be educated.

b. Nursing Research
The research was able to recognize that Filipinos develop risk factors for
coronary heart disease, and this is why that later on in their life they develop the disease.
Moreover, its results show that currently, the most effective way to decrease the rate of
the disease among Filipinos is to prevent its risk factors from developing or worsening.
This implies that nursing research significantly contributes to patient care, and that
through research we learn the best type or what type of care we can provide. However,
further research is still needed on this topic because the management discovered is still
limited to primary care

c. Nursing Practice as a Student

Providing health education is a vital role that nurses play. This implies that for
me to be competent in nursing practice as a student, it is essential that I increase my
knowledge on health. By doing so I can better help and support my patient because I will
be able to offer the best health information or advice that will aid his recovery or
maintenance of health. A competent nurse, or student nurse, should be able to answer the
patient’s question about health and also offer appropriate guidance regarding it.

2. What intervention/innovation was used or implemented in the reviewed study?

The intervention used in the study is mainly health promotion and disease prevention
through health education. Naturally, thorough assessment is first done to the patients in the
community to collect and identify information such as their weaknesses or risks, strengths, traits
and practices that the health workers can use to formulate the appropriate plans or health
teachings. By implementing these, people become aware and knowledgeable about their health.
As they apply what they learn about health, they significantly decrease their chances of
developing preventable risk factors and various health problems.
3. Would this practice change/improve process of patient care? How about patient outcomes?
This practice significantly improves the process of patient care. Through educating your
patient, you accelerate his recovery and prevent further damage to his health because he becomes
aware of what he has to do to improve his health and what to avoid to protect it. By providing
health teaching to your patient, you are able to help the patient even though you are no longer by
his side. In other words, the patient becomes more adept at self-care and health maintenance.
Similarly, this is also true for patient outcomes because as mentioned, their recovery hastens. It is
also possible that the outcome for the patient’s health does not end on just his recovery, because
by educating him about his health, he becomes capable of transitioning to a better or more
optimal state of health.
4. Identify a nursing theory related to the article findings and discuss/describe how these findings
support/contradict your identified nursing theory.
A nursing theory applicable to the article findings is Betty Neuman’s Systems Model.
The theory focuses on the patient’s response to actual or potential environmental stressors.
These may either be internal or external stressors. It also makes use of the primary,
secondary, and tertiary nursing prevention intervention for retention, attainment, and
maintenance of patient system wellness. The study emphasizes that the increase in the rate of
Filipinos developing risk factors for coronary heart disease such as diabetes II, hypertension
and dyslipidemia is due to their lifestyle. Related to this is that Filipinos in good health with
healthy lifestyle who decide to move to America usually transition to developing an
unhealthy lifestyle. It was stated that their diet started to consist of increased junk food, meat,
processed foods, non-fresh vegetables and processed foods. In addition, they also start to live
sedentary lifestyles due to time and monetary constraints for exercise. These are the stressors
that adversely affect their system. It was found out in the study that the best way to protect
Filipinos from developing coronary heart disease, as well as developing risk factors for it, is
to encourage and convince them to alter their lifestyle for better health. This is done by
educating them, and by doing so you promote health and prevent illness. This process, or
intervention, falls under the Neuman’s systems model primary prevention intervention. This
keeps the stressors and the stress response from having a detrimental effect on the body. If

successful, then the patient and the community, such as the Filipino community here, would
remain healthy and well.
