Integrating GIS with IBM Maximo

• Why?
– Locate assets,
assets especially those without street addresses
– “Mash up” Maximo asset information with GIS information
– Provide maps on work orders for field personnel
• How?
– Maximo Spatial vs. ArcGIS Server
• What
What’s
s the value?
– Increase accuracy and reduce time and labor required to fulfill
service requests
– Provide

d capital
it l planning
l i upfront
f t
– Increase O&M staff safety
– Faster, more accurate FRPP reporting back to DOI and OMB
National Park Service NPMap Application:
The Facility Management Approach
National Park Service: NPMap Demo

The Resource Information Management Division (RIMD) has been working with the
Park Facilities Management
g Division (PFMD)
( ) to collect geospatial
g p and digital
g image
g
data of NPS facilities since 1999. A representative amount of data has been collected
for virtually all of the facility asset types (trails, road, maintained landscapes etc.)
across the NPS. However, data collection of park buildings has made the most
progress and has the highest volume of data collected to date. The goal of this
partnership is to utilize these data in the NPMap Enterprise Geographic Information
System (EGIS) application framework and to integrate with the Facilities Management
Software System (FMSS) to enhance usability and efficiency of facilities management.
NPMap is an application that provides users access to this integrated information.
National Park Service: NPMap Demo

• NPMap is located at: http://insidemaps.nps.gov.

• At the opening page choose Facility Management as an application.

National Park Service: NPMap Demo

NPMap overlays NPS geo-spatial data over an imagery or roads

and cultural base map while allowing intuitive referencing,
searching, and visualization capabilities. This application also
allows you to dynamically zoom to any NPS park unit by typing in
the park code into the search box in the upper right hand corner of
the map.
National Park Service: NPMap Demo

The Facility Management application currently has five

layers in NPMap: NPS Regions, NPS Units, Buildings,
Maintained Landscapes and Park Trails.

Selecting the Identify tool in the top left portion of

the map and then clicking on a feature or
features on the map will give you information on
that feature including
g anyy available related data
from external systems.

Selecting a feature in the identify results

tab will bring up the related data tabs on
the right of the screen. The related data
for FM are (but not limited to) the Facility
Management Software System (FMSS) and
NPS Focus image services.

Using geospatial data as a tool for facilities Management is common place and has been used by
municipalities and government agencies world wide. For the NPS, NPMap allows for easy
referencing of facilities locations and assets records in FMSS while providing the opportunity to

managing NPS facilities in the future.
BIA IPSOD Asset Map Viewer Application:
The Integrated
g Approach
pp

• GIS is master asset repository

• Central integration point to other systems

– IBM Maximo
– Deferred Maintenance Reporting
– Federal Real Property Profile Reporting
– Image repository

• Current architecture
– Database: ArcSDE 9.x on Oracle 9i
– Application: ArcIMS 9.x
BIA IPSOD: Asset Map Viewer Demo

IPSOD’s Asset Map Viewer is currently accessible only over the

BIA intranet. The following slides provide a simplified view of
the application workflow.
1. Main Map Viewer window: No login is required. Security is integrated
with Active Directory.
Directory List of sites available to each user is determined
by Access Control List (ACL).
2. Map Viewer Zoomed in to assets with DRG background: User interface
similar to popular web mapping applications for simplicity.
3. Asset selected via map or search engine (lower right): Buttons (map –
upper left) display information from integrated applications.
4
4. Fully integrated: From the Map Viewer,
Viewer users can access photos
photos,
deferred maintenance data, Maximo information and Maximo work
orders.
Collaboration

• NPS has developed and implemented an application

using the latest ESRI server and web technology

• BIA IPSOD has successfully integrated GIS with

Maximo

• BIA IPSOD involvement in DOI Maximo initiative can

help bridge gaps for NPS integration

D
Key Stakeholders

• O&M Supervisors
• Facility Managers
• Maximo/GIS Managers
• Park Superintendents (NPS)
• Regional Engineers (BIA)
• Regional Directors of Operations
• National Directors of Operations
Benefits to Stakeholders

• Operational Awareness (OA) viewers for Park Superintendents, Regional

Engineers and Operations Directors, and National Directors of Operations
– Visualize DM and FCI on annual and comprehensive (5 yr) condition
assessment/asset
/ meeting plans using point and polygon symbology
– Symbolize and visualize selected FRPP data elements across all bureaus
(national and regional scales)

• OA viewers for Facility Managers and O&M Supervisors

– Query/visualize location, type, status, history and concentration of work orders
on map
– Link time stamped images to asset locations to evaluate repairs and current
condition
– Query/visualize assets by API and FCI to better prioritize service schedule
– Work orders queried on map return lists of required equipment to service asset
Benefits to Stakeholders

• Maps for O&M service crews (paper or loaded on PDA)

– Show optimized route to daily work orders
– Show any safety or hazardous material locations/concerns within proximity of
WO assets
– Mobile GIS for service crews to record new repair needs witnessed in field
Looking Ahead

• Next steps
– Develop and implement integrated applications at the NPS and BIA
– Get the word out
• DOI EGIM
• DOI Facility Management System Partnership (FMSP)
• ESRI User Conferences

• Proposed ideas
– Establish DOI working group for facility management
– Conduct mindshare to establish common GIS integration platform for
AM/FM (i.e. Maximo)
