1) Write word equations and balanced chemical equations for each of the reactions
observed.

(a) decomposition of carbonate by heating

Copper (II) carbonate + oxygen gas → Copper (I) oxide + Carbon dioxide
CuCO3 + O2 → CuO + CO2

* Lime water turns chalky due to presents of Carbon dioxide.

(b) decomposition of carbonate with an acid

Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid → Calcium chloride + water + Carbon dioxide

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O +CO2

* Hissing sound is heard as acid react with metal to release carbon dioxide.
* Lime water turns chalky due to presents of Carbon dioxide.

(c) Oxidation of metal

Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

* Bright flash of light is ignited as magnesium is put over lighted flame.

(d) reaction of a reactive metal with a dilute acid

Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2

* Bubbles of odourless gas produced tested. A burning splint goes off with a “POP”
sound.

(e) precipitation of reactions

i. Silver nitrate + Sodium bromide → Silver bromide + Sodium nitrate

AgNO3 + NaBr → AgBr + NaNO3

* A white precipitate of Silver Bromide is produced.

ii. Copper (II) sulfate + Sodium hydroxide → Sodium sulfate + Copper

hydroxide
CuSO4 + NaOH → NaSO4 + Cu(OH)2

* A Blue precipitate of Sodium sulfate is produced.

CuSO4 + Zn → ZnSO4 + Cu

* A layer copper is coated over Zinc.

ii. Lead (II) nitrate + Zinc → Zinc (II) nitrate + Lead

Pb(NO3)2 + Zn → Zn(NO3)2 + Pb

* A layer of Lead is coated over Zinc.

iii. Silver nitrate + Zinc → Zinc (II) nitrate + Silver

2AgNO3 + Zn → Zn(NO3)2 + 2Ag

* A layer of Silver is coated over silver.

2) Writing word equations and chemicals reaction for the followings reactions:

(a) heating magnesium carbonate

Magnesium carbonate + oxygen gas → Magnesium oxide + Carbon dioxide + Oxygen

2MgCO3 + O2 → 2MgO +2 CO2 + O2

(b) adding dilute Sulfuric acid to Copper (II) carbonate

Sulfuric acid + Copper (II) carbonate → Copper (II) sulphate + Carbonic acid
H2SO4 + CuCO3 → CuSO4 + H2CO3

(c) rusting of iron (or burning of iron in pure oxygen)

Iron + oxygen → Iron (II) oxide

2Fe + O2 → 2FeO

(d) adding dilute sulfuric acid to calcium

Calcium + Sulfuric acid → Calcium sulfate + hygrogen

Ca + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2

(f) the reaction between lead and Copper (II) sulfate to produce Lead (II)
sulfate and copper metal.

Lead + Copper (II) sulfate → Lead (II) sulfate + Copper

Pb + CuSO4 → PbSO4 + Cu

(g) the reaction between sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide solution to form
potassium sulfate and water.
