1.INTRODUCTION
1.1 General

Bridge at Ch. 05+932.489 of Thissapura Keselpotha Junction to Aadaulpotha UBA

119 road is being reconstructed by NEM Construction (Pvt.) Ltd under project of
Road Investment Program (I-Road 2) Rural Roads Package 01 Badulla District Uva
Province

Mass concrete gravity walls has been selected for both side new abutments & wing
walls considering existing abutment type & geotechnical & geometrical
requirements.

1.2 Geometric Details of the Bridge Deck

According to the geometric design,

Clear span (opening) of bridge = 6.06 m
Bridge Effective Span = 6.56 m
Design width of the bridge = 9.49 m

1m strip is considered for the loading and structural & stability design for the
abutment and wing walls.Foundation is designed separately.

2.0 LOAD CALCULATIONS- SUPER STRUCTURE

2.1 Dead Load

PSC beams (7.01 m)

No of PSC beams = 15 Nos.

2
Cross section area of PSC beams = 0.14 m

Max. deck slab thickness = 150 mm

Dead load of deck slab = 0.15 x 25 x 7.01 x 9.493 / (2 x 9.493)

= 13.14 kN/m (as a UDL)

Part 2,1978
Cl 6.2.1 Loaded length = 7.010 m < 30 m
Uniformly distributed load = 30 kN/m per notional lane

BS 5400 Knife edge load (KEL) = 120 kN per notional lane

Part 2,1978

HA (UDL) + KEL = (30 x 2+30 x 1/3 ) x 7.01/2 + (120 x 2 +120 x 1/3)

Crack width calculation is one of the serviceability requirement. is expected under

7.3 Lateral Earth Pressure Coefficient

Since Backfill Is horizontal at the Wing wall & use the wall friction angle as zero
for walls , It is recommended to use Rankine equation to calculate the earth
pressure coefficients,

At active condition,
Ka = ( 1- sin(Φ))
( 1 + sin(Φ))
= 0.27
At Passive condition,
Kp = ( 1+sin(Φ))
( 1 - sin(Φ))
= 3.69
At rest,
Ko = 1-sin(Φ)
= 0.43
