Lesson Plan for Grade 1, Language Arts

Prepared by Mrs. Stone

Task 1 eHandbook Model & Practice

This task is an Interactive Tool that allows scholars to read, click, and highlight directly on
the screen or device. Today scholars will use this eHandbook to ask and answer questions
about what we read. We know Good readers ask questions as they read. Sometimes the
answers can be found in the story. Other times readers must use what they already know to
answer the question. Asking and answering questions can help a reader understand key
ideas.Follow these steps when reading:

1. Ask a question about what you read.

2. Think about how you can find the answer.
3. Answer your question.

Click the ‘model’ button at the bottom right of the eHandbook page to see how asking and
answering questions should look before, during and after reading. Read the short paragraph
“Diego and the Whale”. Then, read and follow the three steps below to learn how to ask and
answer strong questions that can help build a stronger understanding of the topic. In each
step, there is a blue hyperlink that will show a pop-up window. When the link is clicked the
pop-up window will come up with instructions, details and tips to help your scholar ask and
answer questions effectively. The three main steps to asking and answering questions are: 1)
Asking questions that might help you to better understand the story. 2) How to find the
answers to your questions by using key details from the text. 3) Checking and proving your
answers with evidence from the text. Asking questions helps you understand the key ideas
and details of a selection.

Next, scholars should click the Practice button in the bottom right corner to ask and answer
questions on their own. Scholars can go back and use the model steps to help as needed.

Once you click on ‘practice’ , a 3 page document should pop-up. The ‘practice’ document has a

1
short passage for scholars to read titled “Good-bye, Blue Sky” with three questions for them
to answer about the text. I will also link the ‘practice’ document on the Weebly site for quick
and easy access.

Task 2 Mother Bruce Read Aloud

Scholars will listen to the read aloud “Mother Bruce” twice all the way through and then take
time to complete the asking and answering questions graphic organizer below. The first read
should be just listening and paying attention to details. The second time can be used as a tool.
The video can be paused, fast forwarded and rewound as needed to help better
understanding and build strong questions. The organizer has space for three questions about
the book. One question should be a question your scholar has before reading. The second
question should be a during reading question written while the video (read aloud) is paused
on a specific place in the book. The third and final question should be from after reading. The
after reading question is so important because it is an example of a question that your
scholar still has even after reading and hearing the entire book. Asking questions helps you
understand the key ideas and details of a selection. Make sure that each answer has strong
evidence from the text to prove the answer to the question is correct. Scholars can use the 5
W’s and a H to help structure questions (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How). Be sure
scholars are writing in complete sentences with capital letters, spaces, and
punctuation.Scholars should follow these steps to ask and answer questions:

4. Ask a question about what you read.

5. Think about how you can find the answer.
6. Answer your question.
