Click the ‘model’ button at the bottom right of the eHandbook page to see how asking and
answering questions should look before, during and after reading. Read the short paragraph
“Diego and the Whale”. Then, read and follow the three steps below to learn how to ask and
answer strong questions that can help build a stronger understanding of the topic. In each
step, there is a blue hyperlink that will show a pop-up window. When the link is clicked the
pop-up window will come up with instructions, details and tips to help your scholar ask and
answer questions effectively. The three main steps to asking and answering questions are: 1)
Asking questions that might help you to better understand the story. 2) How to find the
answers to your questions by using key details from the text. 3) Checking and proving your
answers with evidence from the text. Asking questions helps you understand the key ideas
and details of a selection.
Next, scholars should click the Practice button in the bottom right corner to ask and answer
questions on their own. Scholars can go back and use the model steps to help as needed.
Once you click on ‘practice’ , a 3 page document should pop-up. The ‘practice’ document has a
1
short passage for scholars to read titled “Good-bye, Blue Sky” with three questions for them
to answer about the text. I will also link the ‘practice’ document on the Weebly site for quick
and easy access.
