In compen-
nare cibo online, interessa poco. Silvia Botti
We will remember 2019 as the year of great anniversaries: from the 500 years since the death of Leonardo to the 50
since the moon landing, from the 40 years since Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister of Great
Britain to the 30 since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the birth of the World Wide Web. All of these anniversaries have
been marked and widely celebrated in the Western world. On the other hand we seem loath to get excited about revo-
lutionary discoveries that are going to shape our destiny and our future. The return to the moon and the race for Mars
have not caught our imagination. All we tend to see in 5G, the fifth-generation technology for mobile telephony, is its
risks and drawbacks. We treat artificial intelligence as if it were a more advanced form of domestic appliance. We are
not even able to show much enthusiasm about the experiment coordinated by Google and conducted between Ger-
many and the United States that marks the beginning of the age of quantum computing: a new machine has carried
out in three minutes an operation that would take a normal computer ten thousand years. It will still be a long time
before these processors become a reality, but in the meantime we can boast of having reached “quantum supremacy”. It
sounds good. But as it doesn’t help us to take selfies or order food online, we’re not very interested.

PAPER BALLETS
quest’opera straordinaria. (Alice Piciocchi)
Three dancers that move like marionettes, three acts with 12 dances each, 18
geometric paper mache costumes. The Triadic Ballet, created by the artist and
designer Oskar Schlemmer – which debuted in Stuttgart in 1922 – has a mathe-
matical structure and a graphic precision that made it one of the most influential
abstract choreographies of modern times.
One of the greatest expressions of the Bauhaus, this “dance of geometries”
couldn’t help but be evoked on the occasion of the German school’s 100th an-
niversary. In addition to the many performances staged in 2019, out now is also
a pop-up book for children and adults, put out by the British publisher Laurence
King and translated in Italy by Gallucci Editore. A colourful little gem that through
Lesley Barnes’ cartographic work and Gabby Dawnay’s playful text brings the feel
and kinetic sense of this extraordinary work to life.

simultaneously tackles three themes typical of the lo-
cation: the small size of the plots (around 200 square
yards or 170 square metres), the very hot climate and
the proximity of the buildings. Part of the solution lay in
the introversion of the house, laid out around a central
court running the full height of the building that has a
small garden at its core. The ground floor houses the
garage, some technical rooms and a games room. The
living ( first floor) and sleeping (second floor) areas face
onto the central court, which encloses the garden, an
intimate family oasis, on the first floor. While the room
for guests has been placed on the roof, isolated from
what goes on inside the house. Everything has been de-
signed to cope with the climate and ensure privacy. The
staircases and service rooms have been located to the
south to protect the main rooms from the heat. The din-
ing room and kitchen on one side and the living room
with a delightful study on the other are well-defined
spaces that extend into the garden when the sliding
glass doors are open. Connected by a corridor-balcony,
the two bedrooms open onto the court, the master one

cipale, realizzato a mano).

SINCE LAST SUMMER THERE HAS BEEN AN EVOCATION OF THE ITAL-
IAN STYLE OF THE 1960S in the east tower of Covent Garden. London’s
famous covered market has in fact seen the opening of the first foreign
branch of VyTA, a fine food project (restaurant and cocktail bar) promoted
by the entrepreneur Nicolò Marzotto. The interior design is by Collidan-

End with its many theatres.
Passing through the small entrance in Victorian style and entering the hall,
you come to a staircase embellished with golden wallpaper, a Leaf brass
hanging lamp from LUUM and rosewood steps that turn around a central
wall of Verde Alpi marble. The fine materials – wood panelling, gleaming
surfaces, inlays, friezes, glazing and metallic finishes – combine to gener-
ate an evocative force full of historical references to the architecture of the
years of the Italian economic boom, to its sumptuous details and its idea of
space as the “scenery of existence”, or in other words – as Daniela Colli puts
it – “a dynamic, eclectic and refined setting, conceived as a stage on which
to present a life filled with surrealistic impressions.” A subtle irony can be
discerned in the figurative repertoire that pervades every space, in the ex-
treme repetition of geometric shapes, including the recurrent figure of the
