Research Techniques

What is research?
Research is a fundamental part of working in the media. It gives you a clear
understanding of the subject that you are working with and helps you and your crew
make sure you have everything correct and ready to produce. The definition of
research is “creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of
knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this
stock of knowledge to devise new applications."

Quantitative Research:
Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical
data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics. It is used to quantify
attitudes, opinions, behaviours, and other defined variables – and generalize results
from a larger sample population. The aim of qualitative research is to understand the
social reality of individuals, groups and cultures as nearly as possible as its
participants feel it or live it.
Qualitative Research:
Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an
understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights
into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential
quantitative research. Quantitative researchers aim to establish general laws of
behaviour and phenomenon across different settings/contexts. Research is used to test
a theory and ultimately support or reject it.

What Is primary research?

Primary research is any type of research that you collect yourself. Examples include
surveys, interviews, observations, and ethnographic research. A good researcher
knows how to use both primary and secondary sources in their writing and to integrate
them in a cohesive fashion. Conducting primary research is a useful skill to acquire as
it can greatly supplement your research in secondary sources, such as journals,
magazines, or books. You can also use it as the focus of your writing project. Primary
research is an excellent skill to learn as it can be useful in a variety of settings
including business, personal, and academic.
What is secondary research?
Secondary research is beneficial because it is quick, cheap to conduct, and helps guide
subsequent primary research. Resources can include academic papers, white papers,
industry studies, government studies, news articles and
videos. Secondary research is the most common
research method employed in the industry today. It
involves processing data that has already been collected
by another party. With this form, researchers will
consult previous studies and findings such as reports,
press articles and previous market research projects in
order to come to a conclusion. Secondary research is
relatively low-cost compared to primary research.
