Course - content and Outlines of Examination for the Add-On Course of


Spoken English for Communication Skill. (Part-II)

Teaching periods per week : 8 Time Allowed

Pass Marks : 35%
(Separately in Practical and
Theory Paper).

Objective :

The objective of this course is to bring about an improvement in the learners'


language skills, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Greater emphasis will be laid
on speaking but the other related language skills such as listening reading and
writing too will receive focus so as to make the learners' communicative ability
more effective and impressive.

Instructions for the Paper-Setter


(For the Theory Paper)

1. The theory paper shall consist of six questions in all.

2. Question Number-I pertaining to Grammar exercises shall be set from Units


1 to 8 of the prescribed book. Question Number-II, which also pertains to
Grammar exercise, shall be set from among Units 9 to 15 of the prescribed
book. In each question, the paper setter shall set 13 sentences out of which
the learners shall attempt any 10. Question Number-I and II shall carry 10
marks each.
3. Question Number-III shall consist of two parts. Part(i) shall pertain to
postcard writing. The candidates shall be asked to write a postcard of about
50 words to one's family or friends telling them of one's college routine,
some good book one has read recently, some future plan, some special event
or experience one has had recently or any such related matter. Postcard
writing shall be of 5 marks. Its topic shall be simple and based on the first 8
units of the prescribed book. There shall be no internal alternative in this
part.

4. Part(ii) of Question No.III shall pertain to phonemic transcription of


monosyllabic and disyllabic words in IPA symbols. The words shall be
simple and commonly used. There shall be 8 words in all out of which the
candidates shall attempt any 5. The candidates shall also mark the primary
stress wherever required. This part shall carry 5 marks.

5. Question No.IV shall also contain a passage for comprehension and shall be
based on Units 9 to 15 of the prescribed book. The five questions (of 2
marks each) based on this passage shall test the learner's ability to analyse
and interpret the given ideas. This question shall carry 10 marks.

6. Question No.V and VI shall pertain to writing-tasks. Q. No.V shall pertain


to dialogue-writing based on any situation/information/activity given in the
various units of the prescribed book. The dialogue shall have at least ten
question-answers or response-reflections, etc. Credit shall be given to
candidates who can use two or more tenses in the dialogue-writing. The
paper-setter shall specify the situation very clearly which should easily lead
to the writing of the dialogue. This question shall be of 10 marks.

7. Question No. VI shall pertain to letter-writing. The learners shall be asked


to write a formal letter of about 125 words, carrying 10 marks. Credit shall
be given for appropriate salutations. There shall be no internal alternative in
this question.

Instructions for the Candidates :

1. All the six questions in the theory paper are to be attempted.

2. Question Numbers V and VI (in the theory paper) shall carry no internal
alternative.
3. All the five parts/activities in the Practical examination are compulsory.

Book Prescribed :

(i) Units 1 to 15 of the following book are prescribed for this course :

Headway Pre-Intermediate Student's Book by John and Liz Soars. Oxford:


Oxford University Press, 1991. Thirty-fifth impression, 2000. (There is an
accompanying Teacher's Book, two cassettes and a workbook which shall be
used by the teacher).

(ii) Introducing learners to greater number of disyllabic words which they are
familiar with and are a part of their everyday usage. Helping them identify
the primary stress in these words and teaching them how to mark this
primary stress. Also, consolidating their phonemic transcription.

TESTING :

The final examination of Communicative English shall consist of two


parts :

Part-A: Practical Examination comprising 40 marks.


Part-B: Theory paper comprising 60 marks.

Guidelines for PART-A:

(i) Testing of Listening Skills shall consist of 10 marks. The listening text
could be read out by the examiner or an audio-cassette could be played for
this purpose. The listening text shall be based on the various listening
tasks/activities provided in the cassettes accompanying the prescribed book.
The listening text could be modified keeping in mind the level and listening
needs of the learners.

(ii) There shall be a self-introduction. In this, every learner shall present him
self/herself to the examiner in terms of his/her likes-dislikes, favourite
pastimes, favourite subjects and future plans, etc. This shall carry 5 marks.
(iii) This part shall pertain to a short pronunciation exercise. Every candidate
shall be asked to pronounce at least 5-7 disyllabic words with correct
primary stress. The candidates may be given a list and asked to pronounce
the given words. This shall be a spoken exercise and not a written one. It
shall carry 5 marks.

(iv) Retelling/Re-producing the ideas of a brief news item, a brief article or even
a short story shall carry 10 marks. Candidates shall be provided a
newspaper clipping, a brief article, a very short story or any other writing of
general interest. They shall go through it for 5-8 minutes and then the
candidates shall retell/re-produce, in their own words, what they have gone
through. This retelling shall be done without looking at the given script and
shall be of 10 marks.

(v) The last part in the practical examination shall consist of a Group
Discussion. Candidates shall be divided into groups of three or four. There
shall be a group discussion on a given topic. The topic should be easy to
speak on and shall be decided by the external examiner. Learners shall be
assessed for initiative, participation, correctness of expression and fluency.
This shall carry 10 marks.

Guidelines for PART-B:

The theory paper shall be of 60 marks and 2½ hours' duration.

(i) Question Number-I and II shall pertain to Grammar exercises in the


prescribed book and shall be objective-type. Each shall be of 10 marks.

(ii) Part (i) of Question Number-III and Question Number-IV shall pertain to
postcard writing and shall of 5 marks. The writing of the postcard should be
based on similar writing tasks/activities in the prescribed book. The
approximate word-length of the postcard should be 50.

(iii) Part(ii) of Question No.III shall pertain to the phonemic transcription of


monosyllabic and disyllabic words and marking of the primary stress
wherever required. Words should be simple and commonly used. Out of
eight any five shall be attempted by the candidates. This part shall carry 5
marks.
(iv) Question No. IV shall pertain to reading and comprehension. The passage
for comprehension should be easy to understand and shall be based on units
9 to 15 of the prescribed book. It shall be followed by five questions (of 2
marks each) based on the given passage. This part shall carry 10 marks.

(v) Question No. V shall pertain to writing a dialogue of at least ten question-
answers, responses etc. The situation/information giving rise to dialogue
shall be specified clearly and based on activities in the various units of the
prescribed book. This question shall carry 10 marks.

(vi) Question No. VI shall pertain to letter-writing and shall be of 10 marks. The
candidates shall be asked to write a formal letter of about 125 words.
