Objective :
5. Question No.IV shall also contain a passage for comprehension and shall be
based on Units 9 to 15 of the prescribed book. The five questions (of 2
marks each) based on this passage shall test the learner's ability to analyse
and interpret the given ideas. This question shall carry 10 marks.
2. Question Numbers V and VI (in the theory paper) shall carry no internal
alternative.
3. All the five parts/activities in the Practical examination are compulsory.
Book Prescribed :
(i) Units 1 to 15 of the following book are prescribed for this course :
(ii) Introducing learners to greater number of disyllabic words which they are
familiar with and are a part of their everyday usage. Helping them identify
the primary stress in these words and teaching them how to mark this
primary stress. Also, consolidating their phonemic transcription.
TESTING :
(i) Testing of Listening Skills shall consist of 10 marks. The listening text
could be read out by the examiner or an audio-cassette could be played for
this purpose. The listening text shall be based on the various listening
tasks/activities provided in the cassettes accompanying the prescribed book.
The listening text could be modified keeping in mind the level and listening
needs of the learners.
(ii) There shall be a self-introduction. In this, every learner shall present him
self/herself to the examiner in terms of his/her likes-dislikes, favourite
pastimes, favourite subjects and future plans, etc. This shall carry 5 marks.
(iii) This part shall pertain to a short pronunciation exercise. Every candidate
shall be asked to pronounce at least 5-7 disyllabic words with correct
primary stress. The candidates may be given a list and asked to pronounce
the given words. This shall be a spoken exercise and not a written one. It
shall carry 5 marks.
(iv) Retelling/Re-producing the ideas of a brief news item, a brief article or even
a short story shall carry 10 marks. Candidates shall be provided a
newspaper clipping, a brief article, a very short story or any other writing of
general interest. They shall go through it for 5-8 minutes and then the
candidates shall retell/re-produce, in their own words, what they have gone
through. This retelling shall be done without looking at the given script and
shall be of 10 marks.
(v) The last part in the practical examination shall consist of a Group
Discussion. Candidates shall be divided into groups of three or four. There
shall be a group discussion on a given topic. The topic should be easy to
speak on and shall be decided by the external examiner. Learners shall be
assessed for initiative, participation, correctness of expression and fluency.
This shall carry 10 marks.
(ii) Part (i) of Question Number-III and Question Number-IV shall pertain to
postcard writing and shall of 5 marks. The writing of the postcard should be
based on similar writing tasks/activities in the prescribed book. The
approximate word-length of the postcard should be 50.
(v) Question No. V shall pertain to writing a dialogue of at least ten question-
answers, responses etc. The situation/information giving rise to dialogue
shall be specified clearly and based on activities in the various units of the
prescribed book. This question shall carry 10 marks.
(vi) Question No. VI shall pertain to letter-writing and shall be of 10 marks. The
candidates shall be asked to write a formal letter of about 125 words.
