Major manufacturers of civil transport aircraft

Airbus, Boeing and Tupoloev mainly manufacturer the wide-body and narrow-body jet airliners, while Bombardier and
Embraer concentrate on regional airlines. In order to make an aircraft the manufacturers have to source a number of
different and unique parts to be able to construct the aircraft. There is a large network of specialized parts suppliers
throughout the world that support the requirements of these manufacturers, who sometimes only provide the initial
design and final assembly in their own plants (2009).

There are five major manufacturers of civil transport aircraft these include:

AIRBUS
Airbus is a European multinational aerospace corporation that stood as the world's second biggest aerospace and
Defense Company in 2018. Registered in the Netherlands and trading shares in France, Germany and Spain, Airbus
designs, manufactures and sells civil and military aerospace products worldwide and manufactures in the European
Union and various other countries. The company has three divisions: Commercial Aircraft, Defense and Space,
and Helicopters, the third being the largest in its industry in terms of revenues and turbine helicopter deliveries.

Boeing is based in Chicago, US, and they are the one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, and the largest
manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. Boeing also designs and manufactures rotorcraft;
missiles; satellites; electronic and defense systems; launch vehicles; and advanced information and communication
systems. As they are the major service provider to NASA, Boeing also operates the Space Shuttle and International Space
Station. They are one of the largest US exporters (in terms of sales) and they also provide military and commercial airline
support services to all of their customers in over 90 countries worldwide.

Is a multinational manufacturer of regional airliners, business jets and equipment for public transport its
aviation division, Bombardier Aviation is headquartered in Montreal and its public transport
division, Bombardier Transportation, is headquartered in Berlin
The company manufactures the Bombardier CRJ700 series regional airliners as well as the Bombardier Global
Express, the Bombardier Challenger 300, and the Bombardier Challenger 600 series business jets.

GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENTS

Ground Support Equipment (GSE) is the support equipment found at an airport usually on the apron, the
servicing area by the terminal This equipment is used to service the aircraft between flights. As the name
suggests, ground support equipment is there to support the operations of aircraft whilst on the ground. The
role of this equipment generally involves ground power operations, aircraft mobility, and cargo/passenger
loading operations.

1. TUGS AND TRACTORS: The tugs and tractors at an airport have several purposes and represent
the essential part of ground support services. They are used to move all equipment that can not move
itself. This includes bag carts, mobile air conditioning units, air starters, and lavatory carts.

2. REFUELERS: Aircraft refuelers can be either a self-contained fuel truck, or a hydrant truck or cart.
Fuel trucks are self-contained, typically containing up to 10,000 US gallons of fuel and have their own
pumps, filters, hoses, and other equipment.

3. GROUND POWER UNITS: A ground power unit (GPU) is a vehicle capable of supplying power to
aircraft parked on the ground. Ground power units may also be built into the jetway, making it even
easier to supply electrical power to aircraft.

4. BUSES: Are used to move people from the terminal to either an aircraft or another terminal.

5. CONTAINER LOADER: Container loaders, also known as cargo loaders or "K loaders", are used for the
loading and unloading of containers and pallets into and out of aircraft.

6. TRANSPORTERS: They facilitate the transport of containers from terminal to aircraft or one aircraft to
other.

7. AIR START UNIT: An air start unit is a vehicle with a built-in gas turbine engine which gives the
necessary quantity of high-pressure air to start the engine.

8. PORTABLE WATER TRUCKS/WATER CART: Potable water trucks are special vehicles that
provide reliability and consistency in the delivery of quality water to an aircraft. The water is filtered
and protected from the elements while being stored on the vehicle. A pump in the vehicle assists in
moving the water from the truck to the aircraft.

9. LAVATORY SERVICE VEHICLES: Lavatory service vehicles empty and refill lavatories onboard
aircraft. Waste is stored in tanks on the aircraft until these vehicles can empty them and remove the
waste. After the tank is emptied, it is refilled with a mixture of water and a disinfecting concentrate,
commonly called 'blue juice'.

10. CATERING SERVICE: Catering includes the unloading of unused food and drink from the aircraft
and the loading of fresh food and drinks for passengers and crew. The meals are typically delivered in
standardized carts. Meals are prepared mostly on the ground in order to minimize the amount of
preparation (apart from chilling or reheating) required in the air.

11. BELT LOADER: Belt loaders are vehicles with conveyor belts for unloading and loading of baggage
and cargo onto aircraft. A belt loader is positioned at the door sill of an aircraft hold (baggage
compartment) during operation. There two types towable and self-drive.

12. PASSENGER STEP LADDER/STAIRS: Step ladders are vehicles which are used for passengers to
board and de-board the aircraft. It is of two types towable and self-drive.

13. PUSHBACK TRACTOR: It is a good alternative to tow aircrafts as tow-bars are not always
required. On the other hand, these devices are much more expensive than universal tractors.

14.DE/ANTI-ICING VEHICLES: The procedure of de/anti-icing, protection from fluids freezing up on

aircraft, is done from special vehicles. A hose sprays a special mixture that melts current ice on the
aircraft and also prevents some ice from building up while waiting on the ground.

1. DOLLIES: Are used for the transportation of loose baggage’s, over-sized baggage’s, mail bags, loose
cargo carton boxes, etc. between the aircraft and the terminal or sorting facility.

2. CHOCKS: Are used to prevent an aircraft from moving while parked at the gate or in a hangar.
Chocks are placed in the front and back of the wheels of landing gear. They are made out of hard wood
or hard rubber.

3. AIRCRAFT TRIPOD JACK: They are used to support a parked aircraft to prevent their tail from
drooping or even falling to the ground. When the passengers in the front get off an aircraft, the aircraft
becomes tail heavy and the tail will droop. Using the jack is optional and not every aircraft need it.

4. TOWBARS: They make it possible to tow a given aircraft by a tractor which is clipped to the bar. The
main advantage is that you need only one type of tractor to tow all types of aircrafts. The main
disadvantage is the high number of staff required to fix the bar to the aircraft.
