Abstract

T he science of yoga is an ancient one. It is rich heritage of our culture. Yoga is one of the size orthodox systems of
Indian philosophy. It was collated, coordinated and systematized by Patanjili in his classical work, the yoga sutras. In Indian
thought, everything is permeated by the supreme universal spirit ( Paramatma or Universal- magnetism) of which the
individual human spirit (Jivatma or Bio-magnetism) is a part. The system of yoga is called so because it teaches the means by
which the jivatma, can be united to, or be in communion with the Paramathma, and so secure liberation. (Moksa). Every man
wants happiness. He shuts pain. No one teaches any one to seek happiness. Ananda is embodiment of one’s own nature.
Several older books make a mention of the usefulness of yoga in the treatment of certain diseases and preservation of health
in normal individuals. This article presents the effect of Simplified Kundalini Yoga (SKY) meditation exercise and
Kayakalpa Yoga on the management of diabetes has been investigated well. We carried out well designed studies in normal
individuals and those with diabetes to assess the role of yogic practices on diabetic control. These studies have confirmed the
useful role of SKY yoga in the control of type II diabetes. These studies were short term (Three months period). Three
months average test of blood sugar (HbA1c) is done for before and after SKY training. There was a decrease in the HbA1c
glucose after three month of SKY practices .This suggest that SKY practices have a role even in the prevention of diabetes.

Introduction

Yogiraj Shri Vethathiri Maharishi (1911–2006) was a spiritual leader and founder-trustee of the World Community
Service Center in 1958 in Chennai. He had founded over 300 yoga centers around the world and wrote about 80 books, many
of which became academic textbooks. He was declared the 19th Siddha by the Dravidian University. Vethathiri Maharishi
claimed to synthesize a complete science of living for the betterment of humanity through: Simplified Kundalini Yoga
meditation, Physical Exercises, Kaya Kalpa Yoga and Introspections. [Vethathiri’s lifetime works are called Vethathiriyam],
which literally translates as a roadmap to the mountain of knowledge. He claimed that a deep understanding of nature is
essential for living in harmony with the law of nature, while balancing material well-being with spiritual progress.

If the life is to be happy, successful, and harmonious, good physical health is indispensable. Realising the
importance of proper exercise, and meditation, Thathuvagnani Vethathiri Maharishi has synthesized a simple yet
comprehensive exercise - routine, practicable without strain by any one. This yoga exercise covers a particular aspect of
good health, such as adequate blood circulation, heat circulation and air circulation, lung expansion, muscle coordination and
spinal flexibility. It requires not more than 30 minutes for completion. If one has a regular morning habit of doing this
exercise, he will feel bright and fresh throughout the day and would be able to increase one’s immunity against disease.

Through this SKY meditation, the mental frequency can be streamlined. During the meditation, the mental frequency
will be reduced to the extent of depth of the mind. If the meditation is practised, the thought, deed, the experience and
enjoyment activated through emotional stage become indulgence crossing limit. The frequency of the mind is separated into
four stages according to the emotional mood - Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta stages. The mind crosses the limit of emotional
mood (14 to 40 cycle per second) Beta to peaceful state (8 to 13 cycle per second) Alpha. Further, the mind is expanded to
the level of universe the mental frequency will be reduced to 4 to 7 cycle per second - Theta stage. On further expansion of
mind, the mental frequency will be reduced by 1 to 3 cycle per second Delta stage. Now it gets unification with Divine
State. This practice of meditation called Kundalini Yoga is to be learnt stage by stage through an experienced teacher.

SKY has nine types of Meditation. They are,

1) Agna Meditation, 2) Shanthi Meditatio Thuriya Meditation, 3) Thuriyatheetha Meditation 4) Panchendriya

Meditation, 5) Pancha Bootha Navagraga Meditation, 6) Nine Centre Meditation, 7)
Nityananda Meditation and 8) Divine Meditation

Commence the meditation by concentrating the mind on the life force and conclude it by focusing on the eternal
state which is the origin of life force. When doing Agna meditation, the pituitary gland is activated. In our endocrine system,
pituitary gland is the master gland. It is the headquarters of the endocrine system. The pituitary gland is tiny, pea-sized and it

is most important endocrine gland. It releases at least nine hormones that have important effects on the body. Some of these
control body functions directly; others trigger differentglands to produce hormones of their own.

When doing Thuriya meditation, it is performed at the crown of the head. It is also called Brahmarandra meditation.
Thuriyam is the gateway in the path of Brahmam. Thuria yoga is a pathway to cleanse the soul by eradicating the imprints.
The flow of the life energy circulating through brain cells and mind can be felt as a pleasant sensation during Thuriya
meditation.

Benefits of SKY Meditation

Pineal gland secretes a hormone called melatonin and it boosts immune system and can prevent even viral
infections. It increases life expectancy by an average of 30% (in mice). It can hasten sleep and eases jet lag. It prevents
cancer and acts as an antioxidant. It also protect from ionizing radiation.

Through deep meditation, people can change their heart-rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and other metabolic
functions if they are given information about those functions and consciously try to alter them. These techniques were
studied largely in a search for better methods to reduce hypertension, a medical condition that can be a precursor to
atherosclerosis, stroke, and heart disease.

Simplified physical exercises

The system of physical exercises developed by Shri Vethathiri Maharishi after years of intense research, fulfills the
need of maintaining the proper circulation of blood, heat, air, energy and bio-magnetism, ensuring maintenance of health and
prevention of disease in a gentle way. It develops the immunity system and thus acts as a preventive and as a curative to
various diseases.

Other exercises

Various countries, various climatic conditions, life style, habits are to be taken into account before designing
exercises. Whatever has done a century ago may not be applicable now. The fast moving modern life requires exercises to
suit that life.

Importance of exercises

All parts of body should be used at least to a minimum level. In this modern world based on one’s profession a few
parts of body are used more often than the others. They don’t have occasions to use other parts of body. They need to do
exercises regularly to balance the body functions. It is also important to eradicate sinful genetic imprints. All meditations
should be preceded by physical exercises otherwise pain will be felt all over. Physical exercises make all ‘system’ functions
normally. Hence meditation also gives the desired results.

Simplified Exercises

Vethathiri Maharashi has studied and experimented various types of exercises from various parts of the world. He
combined the best of everything and introduced a method and named it Simplified Physical Exercises for the healthy life of
all human beings. This is the exercises for body and mind. He practiced them first then experimented the same on others.
When he found positive effects then only he advocated these exercises to the world.

1. These exercise don’t harm any part;

2. Don’t take more time, 30 minutes will be enough
3. Blood circulation, heat circulation, respiration and all systems become normal. As they function normally and
effectively these exercises prevent diseases.
4. Inner organs also get the benefit of the exercises.
5. Starting from the age of eight anybody at any age can do this exercise
6. Men, women, boys and girls all can practice these exercises.

All exercises except a few need to be done by closing the eyes. Because, one has to take his mind to the part where his
concentration should lie. Movements should be soft and gentle. There won’t be any sweating. It is another form of
meditation. Exercise done once in the morning will keep the man active throughout the day.

Two forms of exercises

There are two types of simplified exercises they are, 1. Body postures and 2. Movements.

Blood, heat, air circulations are in three different layers in human body. When the body is in the standing position the
more dense blood flows downwards because of the gravity. Air comes up. For example if you take 75% filled water bottle,
water stays at the bottom and 25% of the bottle is filled with air. Just make the bottle upside down. Now one can see again
the water flows downwards and air automatically comes up. When one does the exercise by ‘standing’ blood flows
downwards and air upwards and vice versa. If in a lying position the bottom side gets the blood the upper side gets the air
circulation. If these movements are given continuously a regulation in the flow of air and blood happen which in turn
regulates the body functions?

By hand movements, leg movements, body movements slowly and a little fast, the blood circulation will be
maintained at a normal speed. And also the parts of the body get cleansed.

Types of exercises

1. Exercises for hands and arms

2. Leg exercises
3. Breathing exercises
4. Eye exercises
5. Kapalapathy

Simplified Kayakalpa Exercise

Disease, ageing and death are the three factors that everyone has to meet in his life. Kayakalpa exercise is
rejuvenating the life-force particles. Kayakalpa is not a medicine: it is an exercise. The exercise provides healthy body and
makes it fit and agile. Kayakalpa helps longevity.

The Aim of Kayakalpa exercise

1. Longevity of life
2. Slows down ageing and maintaining youthfulness
3. To lead a disease free healthy life

All these aims can be fulfilled. Siddas who found out the ways achieving these goals wrote everything in the form
of poems which were not understood by many. Hence Kayakalpa was mystery all these days. But the contemporary
philosopher and Shri Vethathiri Maharishi pains-takingly searched and researched to make the Kayakalpa exercise easy and
popular. If one can bring the sexual vital fluid through various stages upto the Thuria (at top of the head) aged poople slao
will look younger and brighter Siva Vakya Siddar. This Kayakalpa exercise is the advanced stage and peak of the Kundalini
Yoga.
Kayakalpa- an- explanation:

There are five factors which design the functioning of the human body.

1. Physical Body, 2. Sexual Vital Fluid, 3. Life force particles, 4. Bio magnetism and 5. Mind.
2. Physical body is made up of millions of cells.
3. Independently functioning, self-rotating and whirling forward life force particles are held by sexual vital fluid.
4. From each life force particles, dust particles spread out in the form of biomagnetic waves.5
5. The extension of the life-force through senses and brain as bio-magnetism is called mind.

Human body is made up of millions of cells. These cells are held together by polar attraction created by bio-magnetism.
When the supply of bio-magnetism is reduced cells begin to disintegrate. At this point mind also becomes weak and loses its
balance. Body remains intact with the cells remaining intact. The cells function normally with the non-stop, with sufficient
supply of bio magnetic force. When the quantum and the quality of bio-magnetism depletes, the cells fall apart and
disintegrate. Disease follow, ageing becomes faster and the end reaches faster.

As long as the bio magnetic force is strong enough to withhold all cells together the blood circulation, air circulation,
heat circulation are functioning normally. This will have an impact on the mind also. Mind functions very well. Due to
various reasons, personal reasons, outside force or climatic or planetary rays the bio-magnetism may get spoiled or the body
functions may be disturbed. These are due to carelessness in food habits, work, atmosphere, sleep, sexuality and thoughts. At
the same time each one has the immunity against such kinds of disturbances. When the actions exceed the limit the immunity
cannot withstand. But leading a principled life and practicing Kayakalpa one can raise the immunity level.

Sexual Vital Fluid

The movement of free electron in a circuit through a wire is called electric current. Just like that the life force particle
which whirl around in a circular movement all over the body is called is called life force. In a battery the electron counts are
related to the acid level and quality. The same way the counts of life force particles and the quality of bio-magnetism are
decided by the quantity and quality of the sexual vital fluid. Therefore in order to have a healthy body and mind the sexual
vital fluid should be sufficiently available both in quality and quantity. Insufficiency in quantity and quality of the sexual
vital fluid will result in the depletion of life force particles which in turn will result in weakening of the bio-magnetic force.
In turn this will affect the body and mind.
Food – Transformation into seven minerals

The food one eats through metabolism gets converted into seven essential minerals. They are juice, blood, flesh, fat,
bone marrow, and the sexual vital fluid in the order.

Importance of sexual vital fluid

The birth and death of a human being dependent on the sexual vital fluid. It holds the life. Death occurs after the
enormous wastage of the fuuil. ‘Body structure and heath of the mind is due to the quality and quantity of the fluid. One has
to understand the importance of the fluid before spending it. Otherwise abuse is the result. And the abuse will result in
disorders in the body and the mind and finally the untimely death’ says Vethathiri Maharashi.

The Importance and Benefits of kayakalpa Training

Kayakalpa exercise controls and maintains the quality and quantity of the sexual vital fluid. The ‘Ojas Breath’
recycles the sexual vital fluid and brings it up towards the Thurium through the spinal cord. In this process sexual vital
fluid reaches its starting point, the brain. One can remain youthful without any disease chronic or otherwise. Ageing can
be slowed down. Death can be postponed. Physical health and mind’s agility are assured. Potency will increase. It
improves one’s wisdom and ensures personality development. Chronic diseases will get cured or controlled.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus (The silent killer), the term “Diabetes” is derived from two Greek words “Dia” which means
“through” and “bêtes” which means to pass. “Mellitus” is another Greek word which means “sweet”. A disease in which
patient passes large quantities of urine containing a sweet substance- Glucose (Sethi, 2002).

Diabetes Mellitus is a major and growing health problem in India its prevalence has stadily raising and by the
year 2025 India would have the world’s largest population of diabetic. Recent epidemiological data shows that the prevalence
of disbetes I India is 8-10% to 2-5% rural and 8% in urban and population. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), the number of people worldwide with diabetes was estimated at 177 million in 2000 and it is expected to at least 300
million by 2025. According to WHO survey, by the year 2025 India will be the world’s diabetes capital.

Diabetes Mellitus, the most common disorder of the endocrine system affects between 10 million to 20 million
people in the United States alone. The disease is brought on by disorders in blood levels of insulin, a pancreatic hormone that
help the system convert blood glucose, or blood sugar in to energy.

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels, which results from
defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes was first identified as a
disease associated with “sweet urine” and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose
(hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose in to the urine hence the term sweet urine. Normally, blood glucose levels are
tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose levels. When the blood
glucose elevates (for example, after eating food) insulin is released from pancreas to normalize the glucose level. In patients

with diabetes, the absence or in sufficient production of insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical
condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime. The practice of Simplified Physical Exercise of
Simplified Kundalini Yoga results in regularly oxygenerising the body, activate the endocrine glands, purify the blood and
regulate its circulation, rejuvenate the whole system and thus help to build up a very high level of immunity against diseases.
Meditation has enabled the patients.

About HbA1c: Enlarge Haemoglobin, in your blood, joins up with glucose to form the chemical called HbA1c

In the blood stream are the red blood cells, which are made of a molecule, haemoglobin. Glucose sticks to the
haemoglobin to make a 'glycosylated haemoglobin' molecule, called haemoglobin A1C or HbA1C. The more glucose in the
blood, the more haemoglobin A1C or HbA1C will be present in the blood.

Red cells live for 8 -12 weeks before they are replaced. By measuring the HbA1C it can tell you how high your blood
glucose has been on average over the last 8-12 weeks. A normal non-diabetic HbA1C is 3.5-5.5%. In diabetes about 6.5% is
good.

The HbA1C test is currently one of the best ways to check diabetes is under control; it is the blood test that gets sent to
the laboratory, and it is done on the spot in some hospital clinics. Remember, the HbA1C is not the same as the glucose level.

Coincidentally the glucose/HbA1C numbers for good control are rather similar though in the UK and Europe: glucose levels
averaging 6.5 mmols/l before meals is equivalent to 7% HbA1C (glucose levels are higher after meals) (see below).

A graph of glucose changes over 9 weeks. The Here the glucose changes between 5-9. This
glucose (green line) changes between 7-12. This results in an HbA1c level of 7% at the end of the
results in an HbA1c level of 10% at the end of the 9 weeks. Well controlled.
9 weeks (red line). Poorly controlled.

Two examples

Below are two examples of people who have their HbA1c measured. One is poorly controlled, one well controlled.

When should the HbA1C be measured?

Measure HbA1c

every 3 months if trying to improve

every 6 months if very stable

If your diabetes is controlled (basically an HbA1C lower than 7%), every 3-6 months.

But if the last reading is above 7% and you are in reasonable health, you will need to achieve a lower level if
possible, and the next reading should be sooner. This assumes you will make changes to improve your control. There is no
point in having your HbA1c measured if you are not trying to achieve good control of your diabetes, although the level does
predict the likelihood of complications from your diabetes.

Your ideal HbA1c depends on your general health, and whether or not you use insulin, etc, and is discussed here.

Illustrated diagrammatically

Haemoglobin in the blood (red, rectangle) combines with glucose in the blood (green, circle) to form glycosylated
haemoglobin.
This reaction occurs over a 10 week period.

Statement of the problem

The system of physical exercises developed by Shri Vethathiri Maharishi after years of intense research fulfils
the need of maintaining the proper circulation of blood, heat, air, energy and bio-magnetism, ensuring maintenance of
