Basic Purposes of Communication in a Workplace

When a person enters into a workplace for the first time, the first thing they notice is the

environment itself. Immediately, there is an urgent need for communication as everything

seems so foreign. A newcomer will have to know how the company runs; get to know their

colleagues, their roles and updates on the current situation of their work itself. Therefore,

communication is one of the most overlooked criteria where work is concerned.

Communication enables a worker to better convey information. Any updates on the company

from the upper management can be passed down effectively and accurately with proper

communication. For example, communication channels such as emails, team briefings and

brainstorming could give employees and management a brief idea of the workplace situation

and therefore give the employees a sense of direction on the task ahead (Durden, 2018).

Besides, communication allows employees to better know their employers at work. Thus, it

will be easier for employee to meet their employer’s requirements and work efficiently.

A good communication skill can greatly promote healthy relationship. Everyone will tend to

have different personalities and work styles. It is important to have a two-way

communication between colleagues in order to establish better understanding of each other

and to foster better collaboration between each other. In a situation where colleagues politely

explain their working styles, strengths and weaknesses, other people can advise, encourage

and complement them so that better results can be seen when working together.

Communication skills such as speaking in a polite manner can aid towards a better working

environment where people will be more favorable in work and tensions could be avoided.

As workplace can be a very stressful place, basic communication skill allows employees to

have a better motivation and encouragement to work better. According to Durden (2018), an

employee with communication skills can motivate each other during stressful and hectic
times and might share their opinions on the issue and might even provide you with solutions

as you make your problems known to others. For example, a workplace could implement a

mentor program for intern or newly employed workers where the seniors can provide

motivation, guidance and solutions through direct communication for the new employees,

enhancing their skills, transferring knowledge, better motivation and therefore improving the

company’s productivity.

On top of that, communication allows your organization to move forward without barriers

that can impede growth. Communication helps you to convince and persuade your colleagues

to progress in a way that aligns and benefit the organization. If you can convince your

colleagues on your idea and proposal in a way that it is beneficial to every party through

effective communication, then everyone would be motivated, happy and the organization can

progress forward. According to Kramer (2019), effective communication also removes

barrier as any dissatisfaction among colleagues can be voiced out and solution can be

identified. Hence, conflicts and miscommunication can be reduced in the workplace.

Communication is also important in the workplace as it enables an employee to establish their

self-effectiveness. It allows the organization to identify each and everyone’s strengths and

identify suitable roles that fit your skillsets. For example, employees will be well appreciated

and praised when they convey their self-effectiveness through error-free, accurate and

understandable communication. In other words, communication is also the basic platform to

bring out the best in an employee.

It is undeniable that communication is a very important element where humans are involved.

In work, without effective communication, employees will have a hard time understanding

each other and feeling demotivated. Besides, inefficient communication causes messages to

not be delivered effectively and company’s performance will be affected. With effective
communication in the workplace, not only it promotes a healthy working culture, but also

improve a company’s overall performance and productivity.
