Start of the Line

Practice teaching is the preparation of student teachers for teaching by practical

training. It is the practical use of teaching methods, teaching strategies, teaching principles,
teaching techniques and practical training and practice (TEFL Learning Center, n.d.). Practice
teaching plays a vital role on becoming a teacher. It provides student teachers experience in the
actual teaching and learning environment.

The first two weeks of in-campus practice teaching at the Benguet State University,
Secondary Laboratory School provided an avenue for me to learn and understand better what it
is to become a teacher. From observations, I was able to see and understand the temperature
and the attitudes of the classes. Are they active or not? Are they passive? Are they more than
what you expect from them? Facilitating a class is not new to me, since I tried taking over a
class in Besao during my vacation. I was able to teach the classes handled by my father in Besao
National High School and my uncle at Saint James High School. The only difference is that I did
not make a lesson plan rather I only executed the lesson directly. These experiences gave me a
bird’s eye view of what to expect inside a classroom thus my first two weeks was not that
fearful nor gave me the idea of being nervous.

The actual demonstration was great since I was able to execute my lesson plan the way
I planned it to be and because my cooperating teachers acted as supportive coaches informing
me of the dos and don’ts in my teaching and even informing me of what to expect with the
classes I will handle specifically 10-3 and 9-3. On that way, I was able to think of strategies on
how to make them participate actively in class since according to them are like “weather that
changes” sometimes they are active, sometimes they are not, and sometimes they are hyper
active. These then tested me on my techniques on how to make temperature of the class the
way I wanted it to be. It turned out to be that they are more of movers, therefore I have to
make the class as lively as possible. Like my motivation, I used action songs and even started
the class with aerobic dance which turned out to be liked by many.

For problems, there was less. I was not able to meet a lot since my cooperating teachers
are supportive. Equipment were not a problem since they are vastly available at the school. Just
one of the problems I met was the usage of mobile phones since it is not allowed in school. I
have to ask the class to hide it as much as they can since we badly need it during my class. They
have to use phones and speakers for their practice. Lastly, the classrooms I was using were not
built for large class. I just have the feeling of “nasisikipan ako, ang mga mata ko” but none the
less I have to get the hang of it.

Paper Works, Paper Life, LPs Everywhere

Lesson planning is one of the core areas of what a future teacher must master.
Objectives, strategies and techniques until assessment must all be in the same line. Hard thing
is, some get caught up at writing objectives and what is the proper way or format of writing a
lesson plan.

Good thing we did not immediately had out our teacher internship. Lectures were
provided first by our supervising instructor therefore I was able to understand more the
essence of writing, making and presenting a lesson plan. I was able to understand better the
dos and don’ts of lesson planning. Moreover, it was my first time to encounter a columnar
lesson plan which in my opinion, is a better format of a lesson plan because at first glance you
can immediately perceive what is all about the lesson plan and don’t need to turn pages and so.
I was then also able to understand more of the verbs used in lesson planning. The verbs in the
Bloom’s Taxonomy that do really need to be used properly like discuss and lecture. I was able to
see the correctness of each verb in its usage in writing an objective.

I am not an organized person like I do go with what will just happen. I do not organize
things beforehand because I do not believe in “too much preparation is better”. Well no matter
what, in campus teaching will be the boiling point of everything. I hope then for best outcome
after.

No Classes but Busy as a Bee

There were no classes at the secondary laboratory high school for straight two weeks
because of their activities: STEP, United Nation Celebration, and Intramurals. These activities
how ever gave us avenue to practice also our management skills, leadership skills, judgement
skills and the like. I for instance, was asked to judge the mural painting of course together with
some of my classmates. There I learn how to act accordingly with the criteria given and to not
let feelings and emotions lead me since some of the contestants are my students.

The united nation’s celebration also gave me a chance to showcase what I can do not as
a student teacher but as a PEHMA student teacher. I was tapped to choreograph a production
number for the candidates of the Mr. and Ms. UN 2019. It was hard at first since they are not all
dance oriented so I have to make it easy task for them. There were moments that I want to
shout and scold them because they were not complete every practices and thinking that there
is only a week remaining before the competition but I keep it myself. I just want that the
pageant end up well so during their final rehearsals I was so strict that even little gestures I
made them repeat the dance from the top. I handled pageants before, but this was way
different because the candidates are of wide age gap from me so I have to make everything
clear for them. It was a good experience though because it taught me how to be patient and
keep my anger no matter what the circumstances are.

Moreover, the intramurals provided us avenue to practice our officiating skills and
management. It was tough because we have classes that week and then we have to officiate
also. I officiated volleyball men and women since it is my strong foundation. It is the sport I am
most acquainted with. We were all tired and exhausted that week because not only that we
have classes and were asked to officiate but we also need to practice our dances for the
upcoming MOVE IT. That was a hell week for me.

To end up, thinking positively, I just told myself that these are all tests and that I should
be ready and prepared for more. These are activities that tests how strong one is in the
teaching field that no matter what the day brings the point is” you are the teacher, you are the
manager.”

Tired but the Body Says, “Your Students are Waiting”

Waking up, I was still too tired my body seems don’t want to wake up. The aftershocks
of the straight 2 weeks activities are still felt in my body but yet I have to wake up and prepare
because I have to teach. I prepared my lesson plans earlier so I have no problem on that. My
only problem is on how will I teach them, I felt like my brain cells are all gone because I cannot
think straight or think well of how should I teach it.

Entering the classroom I found myself confident since my students were smiling and
saying “Kumusta ka sir, you look too tired. Thank you for supporting us during the games.” This
gave me the energy to teach no matter how tired I am. This also gave me the realization that
your students are your energy booster, what you do to them they will give it back to you. I was
very happy that day. They were very cooperative and active that the lesson ended 10 minutes
before time so what I did was, I exchanged stories with them. How are they? How do they felt
after the intramurals? What have they done for their team?

“What you do to your students reflect back to you.” Remember that a teacher is a
second parent therefore the love, care, and support should always be there. These are just
some of the things a teacher can do to be remembered by his students because “once a
teacher, forever a teacher.”

The End

“Every beginning has its end.” The in campus practice teaching in Benguet State
University, Secondary Laboratory High School has come to an end. I felt fulfilled since I know I
have been productive student teacher during my stay at the school. I together with my partner
hosted the Search for Mr. and Ms. SLS 2019 and the opening of the BSU-SLS Intramurals 2019; I
offered what I can do by teaching and choreographing the production number of the candidate
during the Search for Mr. and Ms. UN 2019; I have been one of the judges during the mural
painting competition during their STEP; lastly, I was one of the officiating officials in volleyball
during their Intramurals.

On the other side, I am a bit sad not because I am leaving my students but because I was
not able to know all of their names. I really do not know at least ten names from the classes I
handled. It is one of my weaknesses maybe, because I am not the person who knows or
remembers people by their names. I remember people by their face that is why it saddens me
because I was not able to know and memorize all the names of my class from 9-3 and 10-3. I
was very overwhelmed though because their evaluative comments were all heart touching like
most of them said they were very thankful because I was the student teacher who handled
them and I was their favourite. Another one, is that they said they can see that I have master
the lesson and I am great in demonstrating that they were not hard up in learning like the
dances and stunts in gymnastics. These comments will surely keep me going, will surely make
me love more what I do.

I learned so much during my stay in the school. One is that, a teacher should always
have a wide array of teaching strategies to be in parallel with each of the students since not all
of them learn in the same way. Another one, always enter the classroom with a big smile no
matter how you feel because it will reflect back to them. Before you enter the classroom, leave
all the “bad energies” you are feeling. Third, open the lesson with an activity or fill the lesson
with a lot of activities since it will teach them to collaborate with each other and it will make
the class awake and active. Also, as what I have experience, you may not follow your lesson
plans since inputs comes along the way, like if there are questions raised by the students which
are not found in the lesson plan or suddenly you thought of better strategies while you were
teaching your lesson. Lastly, scolding is not the answer to let them learn instead use their
attitude inside the classroom for them to learn. If they are eating so be it, as long as you see
they are listening and responding to you and your questions; if they are noisy so be it as long as
they are working together. Let them learn the way they wanted to, all you have to do is to
facilitate and reinforce what they are doing in order to make sure that they leave the classroom
with a bucket of knowledge.
