Hurricane David in the Dominican Republic
Hurricane David in the Dominican Republic
The powerful hurricane David hit the Dominican Republic on August 31, 1979, killing
dozens of people and causing untold economic losses. David formed in the Atlantic
near the islands of Cape Verde on August 25. In addition to the Dominican Republic, it
affected Puerto Rico and Cuba.
Some experts estimate that in total two thousand 400 people lost their lives, but others
argue that the victims were four thousand. Hurricane David was one of the most
destructive of the last century, it was thrown on the Dominican Republic, causing
serious damage.
In Santo Domingo, The Malecón was an area very affected by its proximity to the
Caribbean Sea. There, part of the pavement was destroyed, thick cement benches were
lifted and thrown to the road due to the wind and most of the restaurants were
damaged. Old almond trees and other trees flew out.
Dozens of new vehicles, which had to be removed from customs, suffered damage to
the dock. Thousands of residences lost ceilings, windows and walls. Much of the
electric lighting and telephone lines collapsed and aqueducts were also affected.
The hurricane struck the Dominican territory for four hours, with winds estimated at 240
kilometers per hour and lost intensity while heading southeast of Cuba and the great
island of The Bahamas.
Once the hurricane passed, President Guzman moved to several communities to verify
the damage and comfort the victims and families of the deceased.
