A comprehensive investigation with an eating disorder treatment center near you is the
most important thing while looking for treatment. Initially, the treatment professionals
will try to know your history and the path of your eating disorder to know: When did
your struggles with food begin?

What was going on in your life at that time that might have fueled these struggles?

The provider will want to hear as much as you can comfortably share the nature of your
eating disorder symptoms including specifics about the behaviors along with their
frequency and intensity.

He/she will want a sense of your social and emotional development to date, your family
life, and any major events that occurred previously that might impact how you feel
today. It’s also helpful to get a basic record of your weight and diet history and any
treatments you might have had in the past.

v
It is natural to feel nervous if you’ve never spoken about your struggles before. Eating
Disorder Treatment professionals understand that there may be things that you leave
out in this initial meeting… Perhaps because you forget, or feel embarrassed or nervous
(it’s not easy to share your deepest secrets with someone you just met for the first
time!). This is understandable. There will always be opportunities in the future to share
more when you’re ready.

What to ask?

It’s important to be proactive when inquiring about the training of prospective clinicians
and about the treatment options that a facility may offer. The following questions may
be useful in this regard:

o Do you have a specialization in eating disorder treatment and how

long have you been treating?
o If an outpatient provider: Dov you work closely with other
professionals (i.e. dieticians, psychiatrists, medical doctors) who specialize in the
treatment of eating disorders?
o Have you received the training for eating disorder treatment? Do you
have any evidence-based treatments that you provide?
o How do you figure out that what you do in treatment works?
