U.S. History II Civil Rights Wiki

The Scenario: Impressed with our work so far this semester and our
dedication to the study of history, the National Civil Rights Movement
Museum (NCRMM) has enlisted our help in developing a series of visual
exhibits. You and a partner will be assigned one of the following events from
the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, which cover the period from
approximately 1957 through the 1970s.

The Events
1. The Integration of Central High School (1957)
2. The Sit-in Demonstrations (beginning in 1960)
3. The Freedom Rides (1961)
4. The Albany Movement (1961)
5. The Integration of Ole Miss (1962)
6. Campaign in Birmingham (1963)
7. March on Washington (1963)
8. Freedom Summer (1964)
9. Selma Campaign (1965)
10. Forced Busing in Boston (1974)

Directions: Fortunately, NCRMM has left many of the specifics to your

discretion, knowing how creative and capable historians you are. There are a
few particulars that they would like included, but let’s begin with the big
picture. You need to select a central theme around which you will structure
your exhibit. Some pre-approved examples are found below:

*Racism *Hatred *Discrimination *Courage

*Determination *Injustice/Justice *State and/or Federal
Government Involvement

Your exhibit should feature some or all of these themes prominently.

The Specifics:
A. Text should be used sparingly in your exhibit. Viewers do not wish to
read large
blocks of text. Grammar and spelling will be taken into
consideration when
evaluating your work.
B. Quotes and other primary source material should be integrated
whenever possible.
C. The bulk of your exhibit should be comprised of photographs,
political cartoons,
recordings of interviews, songs, etc. and film or videos that are
relevant to your
topic.
D. Go beyond just simply reporting the facts of the event. Explore
unique facets that
you feel your audience will find compelling. Feel free to examine
the long-term
causes and effects as well.
E. Your exhibit should clearly indicate to an audience why knowledge
of this event
and the people associated with it matters to Americans in the 21st
Century.
F. You should embed a link to at least one outside resource that that
contains
appropriate and educationally useful material.
G. At the end of your exhibit, you must pose an open-ended question
to your
audience. This question should require them to engage in critical
thinking about the
content of the exhibit and the event that you are covering.
H. You should provide attribution for all of your sources, including
images. MLA
format is not required. Please consider using the electronic
databases available
through the IMC.

Suggestions for using this resource:

A. Our wiki is located at http://civilrightsmuseum.wikispaces.com/
You have
been given editing rights at this site. You may wish to add this to your
list of
favorites on your personal computer. A link has also been added to
our class Moodle
site.

B. To avoid crashing wikispaces and losing all of your hard work, it is

suggested that you
compose your entry in a Word document and then copy and paste it
into your wiki
page.

C. Editing a wiki page is similar to working in a Word document.

Remember to just be
patient since it doesn’t always cooperate as much as you would like!
The advantage of
a wiki is that you can incorporate various types of media and provide
links to other
aspects of your wiki or sites on the internet.

D. Anything you place on this site will be accessible to the public. Please
keep that in
mind as you go about this assignment.
