Lesson Plan III


Unit 9 Animal Shelter/Present Continuous Tense
Target Audience and Context: 5th grade students
Learner Level: A1
Class Size: 24
Class Length: 40 minutes

Assumed knowledge:
Students know;
 unit vocabularies ( feed, grass, grow, collect, dangerous, bee, dog, horse, cat, duck,
lion, kitten, farm, monkey, snake, cow, parrot, wolf, elephant, sheep, animal shelter,
zoo)
 how to make sentence with simple present tense
 how to form Wh questions

Objectives:
  Students will be able to:
 make sentence with present continuous tense in the sentences.
 make question form of present continuous tense.

Time and Procedures


Materials
 Welcome/greetings
2 minutes  Teacher asks students how they are.

Pre-Activity:
8 minutes  T: Let's start with a game. Are you ready? Today we will play "Who am
I?" game. Do you know this game? I will make some animal noises and I
will sing "Who am I?" song . You will try to guess the animal's name.
Okay! Woof woof! Who am I? Who am I? Guess, guess! Who am I? Yes,
it is a dog. You can sing song with me. Meow meow! Who am I? Who am
I? Guess, guess! Who am I? ...
Rationale: This activity aims to attract attention of students for a quick
review of unit vocabularies by using a song. I developed this activity
considiring that this age group can easily develope their receptive skills
with songs.

Main Activity:

T: We will meet somebody, she sent a letter to us. We will read her letter
together (please check the appendix below) and talk about her letter. Why
some words are red? Is there something different? These red ones are
10 minutes present continuous tense. Look at this timeline, not past, not future. Now!
"I am writing this letter now". Did you notice that when she talked about
now, she used "SUBJECT BE + Ving". "My father is feeding the cow and
my mother is watering plants." My father is subject + is + feed (verb)+ing
+ cow is object. My mother is subject + is +water(verb) +ing + plants are
object. They are doing now! Our cats are playing with a ball. Let's say
with me. Our cats are subject + are + play(verb)+ing. How can we make
a question with present continuous tense? Look this example "What are
you doing now?" " BE + SUBJECT+ VING " Are you writing letter
now? Be + you+ Ving Is your father feeding cow? Be+ your father is
our subject + feed (verb)+ing and cow is our object Do you have any
question? Please write these examples on your notebooks. Who wants to
say wha am I doing know?

Rationale: This activity aims to create a framework about grammar


topic in students mind and support this framework with real-life
examples. Authenticity is important for teaching process.

  
Post-Activity:
T: You will work in groups,groups of 4. Each group has 6 members. You
18 minutes will create a farm with your group and each member in the group has an
activity to do in the farm. For example, Ali, Ayşe, Duygu and Kerem you
are in the same group.You design a farm. What is Duygu doing in the
farm? Think about the activities you are doing. Please write your job with
continous tense. For example, "I am feeding cats". You will use these
cartons, pencils and pictures to create your farm. Please don't forget to
give a name to your farm. You have 3 minutes to make your groups and
10 minutes to create your farms and make your sentences. Then we will
choose the best farm in the class.
Rationale: This activity aims to reinforce new inputs by using group
activiy strategy and thus, collaboration is part of the learning process.
Also, it is an activity to assess their performance as well.

Closure: Homework
T: Today you will be a detective and you will take some notes about your
2 minutes
family. For example, my mother is driving a car (16.00) My sister is
doing homework(18.00) My father is reading a book (18.30) etc. Please
come to class with your notes! We will talk on your notes begining of the
next lesson.
Rationale: This activity aims to provide a contex to students apply their
knowladge.

Hi 5-D,

I'm Selma. I live in a farm in Ankara. Today is a very busy day for us. I will tell you what my
big family and I are doing in the farm now. I am writing this letter to you now. My father is
feeding the cow. My mother is watering plants. Our cats are playing with a ball. My sister
and brother are collecting eggs. Our dog is running with other dogs. My grandmother is
cleaning barn with my grandfather. Everybody is working here.
I want to learn what you are doing now?
I hope to see you soon...
