Each student will sign out their own copy of
MathLinks 9 (McGraw-Hill). They will be responsible
for its safe keeping.
This textbook can be kept in the classroom or at
home to be used for regular practice.

SUPPLIES:
 Pencils, erasers, loose leaf paper, a binder.
 Students must have a scientific calculator.
Students will not be permitted to use their cell
phones as calculators.
Math 9 is a challenging and exciting course. Students
encounter a variety of new concepts, and begin to
cement important skills and understandings that they
will use in future math courses and related fields.
Math 9 is a dense course. It covers a great deal of
material in great detail. The objective of this course is
to prepare students to:
 represent a variety of situations with numbers,
symbols, and operations;
 set-up and solve multi-step problems;
 add strategies and skills to their problem-solving
toolkit;
 develop mental math and reasoning skills
through practice and reflection;
 grow in their confidence and perseverance as
they attempt, re-attempt, and check their
solutions;
 and better appreciate the weird and wonderful
ways math makes up our world!

What does it take to be successful in Math 9?

Math is a language, and as with all language learning, it takes practice and perseverance.
Regular practice is essential. The more problems you attempt, the more corrections you make,
the more effort you put in, the easier Math 9 will become. We will complete multiple assignments
within a week, and it is important that you are completing your work, asking questions, and
checking your solutions.
Tutorials will take place every week. These tutorials are an opportunity to get extra help. You
may need to attend throughout the year, for one unit you find challenging, or only before exams,
but you should be attending tutorials.
 STRANDS OF STUDY
Strand 1: Numbers (27% of course mark)
(September – October)
Students will develop a sense of numbers, what they
represent, and how they relate to one another.
This strand includes:
 Unit 1: Rational Numbers
o Students will solve problems involving fractions,
decimals, percentages, integers, approximating
square roots, applying order of operations
(BEDMAS) and ordering numbers.
 Unit 2: Exponents
o Students will apply exponent laws to simplify and
solve expressions with exponents.
Strand 3: Shape & Space (20% of course mark)
(January – March)
This strand includes:
 Unit 6: Circle Geometry
o Students will investigate relationships
between measurements of a circle, including
angles and side lengths of shapes within a
circle.
 Unit 7: Surface Area & Transformations
o Students will calculate the surface area of 3D
objects, and rotate and reflect 2D shapes on
a Cartesian grid.
 Unit 8: Similarity & Scale
o Students will determine if shapes have
internal or rotational symmetries, and
manipulate shapes using scale factors.
All of the units above add up to 90%. The final 10% of each student’s grade will come from their Provincial
Achievement Test in June, which counts as their Final Exam.
Strand 2: Patterns & Relations (36% of course mark)
(November – January)
Students will algebraically represent situations using
equations, like y = mx + b, inequalities, like 8 < x + 12,
and polynomials, like a2 + 2b.
This strand includes:
 Unit 3: Solving Linear Equations & Inequalities
o Students will apply reverse order of operations
to identify unknown variables.
 Unit 4: Linear Relations
o Students will graph equations, as well as use
graphs to determine equations.
 Midterm Exam in January will replace lowest
exam mark from Semester 1.
 Unit 5: Polynomials
o Students will use skills and understandings
from Unit 2: Exponents to simplify polynomial
expressions.
Strand 4: Stats & Probability (7% of course mark)
(May)
This strand includes:
 Unit 9: Data Analysis
o Students will collect, display and analyze data
to solve problems.
o Students will use experimental or theoretical
probabilities to represent and solve problems
involving uncertainty.
 Academic Achievement
ASSESSMENT and EVALUATION:

Students will demonstrate their understandings and skills in Math 9 on assignments, quizzes, and unit exams.

While all assignments must be completed, some will count for marks and some will be an essential part of
practice and learning. Students will be informed if an assignment is to be handed in for marks.

Keys for practice assignments will be posted in the Google classroom. Students need to be checking their work,
asking questions, and ensuring they are on pace. Students can bring questions or concerns they have to class
to discuss and get help.

Quizzes are a way to assess strengths and areas for improvement. While students should be preparing for
quizzes, these are opportunities to make a best attempt, learn from mistakes, and make improvements before
the unit exam. Quizzes will only count towards the unit mark in situations where they improve a student’s
unit mark. The bulk of each unit mark will come from the unit exam.

Emails will be sent home with important quiz and Provincial Achievement Exam 10%
