Exam-style Question on Probability Worksheet

Paper: 1 Marks: 6
Question 1

Alan would like to hire a taxi from a company which has a large number of taxis.
The taxis are randomly assigned by the company.

The probability that a taxi is red is 0.50.

The probability that a taxi is a Toyota is 0.70.
The probability that a taxi is red or a Toyota is 0.80.

(a) Find the probability that the taxi hired by Alan is not a red Toyota.  [4]

(b) Find the probability that the taxi hired by Alan is red, given that it is a Toyota.  [2]

Question 2

Kognity Airlines is known for its punctuality across the world. The probability, P(D), that one of its
flights departs on time is 0.91, the probability, P(A), that it arrives on time is 0.94, and the probability
that it both departs and arrives on time is 0.87.
(a)  Show that events A and D are not independent. [2]
[2]

(b) Write down the probability that the flight does not depart on time. [1]

[1]

(c) Find the probability that:

     (i)  the flight departed on time given that it arrives on time. [2]

(ii)  the flight arrived on time given that it did not depart on time. [5]

Question 3

Marcella is standing for class representative. There is a probability of 0.40.4 that she supports a
proposed change to the school dress code. If she supports it, the probability that she will be elected as
class representative is 0.70.7. If she does not support it, the probability that she will be elected
is 0.40.4.
The following tree diagram represents this information:

(a) Write down the probability that Marcella is not elected if she supports the new dress code. [1]

(b) Find the probability that Marcella supports the new dress code and is elected.   [2]

(c) Given that Marcella is elected, calculate the probability that she supports the new dress code.

Question 4
100 children are asked whether they like to drink water (W), orange juice (J) or lemonade (L). The
results are as follows:
5 children like all three
37 like water and juice
9 like juice and lemonade
23 like water and lemonade
1 likes none of the three choices
2x children like water only

(a) Draw a Venn diagram to represent this information. [4]

The number of children who like juice only is equal to the number of children who like lemonade
only, and to half the number of children who like water only.

(b) Complete the Venn diagram, including this information in terms of x. [1]

(c) Find the value of x. [2]

A child is chosen at random from this sample.

(d) Find the probability that this child: [4]

      (i) likes water only.

(ii) likes at least two of the three drinks.

(iii) likes all three drinks, given that he likes juice.

(e) Two children are chosen at random from the sample. [6]

    (i) Find the probability that both children like all three drinks.

(ii) Find the probability that at least one of the two children likes all three drinks.
