WHAT IS IT LIKE IN SCHOOL?
Holistic Assessment

• Focuses on building greater confidence and nurturing a stronger intrinsic motivation to learn so
as to develop your child’s potential.

• Use of appropriate assessment modes to provide useful information to support students’

learning and holistic development.

• No examinations and weighted assessments at P1 & P2 to ease your child into formal
schooling. The criteria for the Edusave Merit Bursary and Good Progress Award has also been
changed, to focus on learning dispositions, instead of academic results.

• Parents can also support your child’s learning progress by affirming their efforts and be proud
of their learning progress and achievements.

SO WHAT? BE A COMMUNITY BUILDER…
1. Role modelling
• Have a realistic perspective of what a school will be like
• Be positive and demonstrate thanksgiving in all circumstances
• Be resilient and demonstrate unity

2. Respect the school as the authority. Trust teachers’

professionalism. Together, we work towards common goals..

3. Seek common ground. Respect all school staff and understand

our shared responsibilities. We are not vendors (nor hotel
concierge).
SO WHAT? HELP OUR SAINTS TO BE A
COMMUNITY BUILDER…
4. Give our Saints the opportunity to be independent and even show
leadership
• Do not bring things for our Saints if they have forgotten to bring.
Let them learn to bear the consequences of their actions.
• Teach them to listen to instructions and take down notes instead
of having my teachers to repeat the instructions to you.

5. Help our Saints to be problem solvers so that they can be

community builders.

6. Treat every Saint as your own (One Family Unbroken) and give
every Saint the time and chance to learn.
4. TRANSITING TO PRIMARY 1
• A smooth transition is made when your child:
o feels safe and comfortable in their new
environment.
o is able to manage the daily challenges of school
life.

• To prepare our Saints for P1,we can:

oTeach them to relate to others
oHelp them develop good habits
oNurture them to have positive learning attitudes
oCreate a conducive learning environment at home

Activity Book
24
RELATING TO OTHERS
Build your child’s interpersonal skills by:
• Modelling the use of friendly and polite
phrases
• “Hello! My name is… what is your name?”
• “May I please…”
• Providing opportunities for your child to
share and take turns during playtime with
other children.

• Teaching them coping mechanisms (e.g.

deep breaths, quiet corner, stop-think-do)
to enable them to manage their emotions.

25
DEVELOPING GOOD HABITS
Routines help children learn to
manage themselves.
Guide your child to do the following
independently:
• Keep to a regular bedtime
• Make healthy food choices
• Pack their bag
• Dress themselves
• Buying food at the canteen

26
NURTURING POSITIVE
LEARNING ATTITUDES
Developing the right learning attitude in
your child will help them to transit smoothly
into the learning routines in primary school.
You can encourage your child to:
• Ask questions about their experiences and the world
around them.
• Express their thoughts and feelings about and
discuss what can be done if they have worries.
• Practice life skills independently (e.g. buy food and
drink on their own, ask for permission etc).

27
CREATING A CONDUCIVE LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT AT HOME
Set up a conducive home environment
so that your child can learn both at
home and in school:
• Encourage your child to learn English and their
Mother Tongue, through picture books, language
games or songs.
• Set aside space in your home where your child
can read and finish their homework.

28
5. PREPARING FOR SCHOOL
• Providing a structured and supportive environment
